Mike S Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The legs might not be a new mold, but the body is. If the film didn't exist, I wouldn't care, but I just don't find it a good representation. If I am paying 130, I would prefer more pieces, less big molding, especially if the molding doesn't look like the subject. We definitely have different preferences as I prefer the large molded pieces of large animals/creatures. The latest Dino molds are quite possibly my favorite molds to date. In fact, I nearly only buy a set now for the minifigs and molded creatures as it is difficult to collect enough of the same color/type piece through sets. I feel sorry for TLG having to try and satisfy everyone... Quote
Legoman123 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Well I really did expect to see more of a build to it, it just feels like a big chunk is missing. Quote
legofreak86 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 AH shucks!!! It does just end with the rail trailing off like that... That's a bit disappointing I was hoping a third section would be in there. Theres not even a lever for Bilbo to pull to release the gold like in the film. That's very disappointing just those two big gates would finish it off nicely, As it is not even anywhere near £100. There are £60 sets bigger and better than that. I will end up getting it for smaug and figures though. For the most expensive set of the hobbit line this is very small. I hope the next 3 sets are better and have more of the figures we need. At least this gives us Bilbo, smaug and some of the main dwarves in armour. I really hope we see thorin, thranduil, bolg, bear beorn, blue coat bard and some of the armies that fight in the battle. Quote

Wardancer Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Some more pictures: http://toynewsi.com/news.php?itemid=22994 Seeing Smaug from the top makes him look much Better than in the very first picture. This is a relief! He is definitely longer than other Dragons and does not Look fat from above. Edited July 24, 2014 by Wardancer Quote
kevkipo Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Omg!!! His wings are defenitely cloth fabric cape like! I looovveee this set! and that release date I shared so much love today... I really do hope we'll get that Bard in a new set Edit: now that i look at the wings again they look kinda rubbery, but still they can fold :) Edited July 24, 2014 by kevkipo Quote

Deathleech Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 SDCC Bard's packaging, just thought it looked cool: http://news.toyark.c...n-inpackage.jpg Notice the San Diego Comic Con stamp on his packaging doesn't say it's exclusive? On the others, like the DC Super Heroes, it says "2014 Exclusive". Quote
Missing Brick Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Call me nuts but I was hoping for a Smaug that looked a bit more like this: Quote

legofreak86 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) I have to say Smaug is everything I hoped he would be and its great to see him and the set has parts of the 2nd film scenes that are quite cool so its not a complete and utter disappointment on second look. Its perhaps not what I expected but It will do. Like many others I will buy this for smaug and Bilbo and the armoured dwarves. these dwarves in this set lead me to believe laketown tower may have some others. Bofur perhaps. I really hope thorin shows up as he is the most important character in this film other than Bilbo, bard and Gandalf. Hopefully FBTB's pictures (as they usually cover this sort of thing) will show us close up of the minifigures like they did in 2013. Edited July 24, 2014 by legofreak86 Quote
Dr.Cogg Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) I like Smaug, but I wish lego could have made him bigger by building him more like a Galidor figure, kind of like Ooni Built in sections like the figure ,not looking the same. Edited July 24, 2014 by Dr.Cogg Quote
SandMirror38 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Well Bard's started to go on sale on Ebay..... So tempted but I need to know if he comes in a set or not!! Quote
Amazing Bricks Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Notice the San Diego Comic Con stamp on his packaging doesn't say it's exclusive? On the others, like the DC Super Heroes, it says "2014 Exclusive". That's a good thing, so we can expect bard in the laketown tower set! Quote
Blakstone Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Sandmirror, wait. The last LEGO press release omitted exclusive when talking about the Bard but used it for the Collector and the then unknown DC guy. It strongly appears Bard is just a preview like last year. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Smaug's body looks fine to me. The only thing that could have been really improved would be the hind legs, but I don't begrudge TLG for saving money on new molds for them as they already made quite a few new molds for him. The legs are definitely a new mould, it's especially noticeable when you compare the claws with the ones the Castle dragon sports: Quote
Fives Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 This debate on whether he'll be in a set or not is exactly what happened last year with the Azog fig. He'll be in a set. Quote
legofreak86 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Seriously. Smaug looks amazing. Yeah agreed Smaug is epic. Sadly the set doesn't match his level of excellence. Still it is reasonably accurate and has some exclusive variants. I especially like blue coat Bilbo. Hopegully FBTB will provide us with close up pictures at some point. Quote
Kez Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Smaug's legs are indeed a new mold (notice the few more toes/claws on his feet aswell as the one missing from the back compared to the dragon mountain set). I will most likely wait for this set to go on sale as there are better sets coming out. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 This debate on whether he'll be in a set or not is exactly what happened last year with the Azog fig. He'll be in a set. Ya, and Azog's packaging also said exclusive like the rest of this years 2014 exclusive figs, but he wasn't even really an exclusive (just his packaging was?). Bard's packaging doesn't even say exclusive. I would say that is a pretty sure fire sign he will be in a set. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 That's cool that Bard may just be a preview figure. It'd make sense to assume that since it doesn't say exclusive on the package and they never said he was exclusive directly. You'd think we would get him in a set. Quote
Cammo Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The Lego Gold placemat gives it an extra touch. (Too bad there's no pearl gold baseplate ) Quote
Fives Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Given what figs are in this set, these are my guesses for the rest of the wave: Battle of Five Armies set: Thorin in armour, Thranduil in armour, Beorn as a bear, Bolg, Dain, and some troops. Lake-Town: Bard, Bain, Alfrid, Bofur, Oin, and maybe Bard's daughters. Dol Guldur: we already know the figs here. Quote
