deskp Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I dont think there will be any more of the company except for Thorin. Bofur and Oin are unimportant. And I think Kili+ fili would have been in lake town if that set wanted dwarves. While there is some chanse we get bofur. I highly doubt another Oin hes a nobody. As for thranduil being in bo5a set. I kindof feel like lego made the effort with him in DOS and is done with him. Quote
azog15 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Well, the new photos indicate that there is not really anything to the left of the photo from yesterday. The good news is the October release date. If they do triple VIP points around Thanksgiving again, that would be the day to get this. At least, I recover some of the cost of the set to use on something else. I'm new to the whole LEGO thing so how exactly do the VIP points work? Quote
Deathleech Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Dol Guldur: we already know the figs here. With the Erebor set having it's figure count being so off (was reported 8 or 9 and we only got 5...), this makes me wonder if some of the other sets might be too? In particular the Dol guldur set. It seems weird EVERY $10-13 LotR/Hobbit set so far has only had 2 minifigures and this one supposedly has 3? Another possible explanation is maybe the price was off and it's a more expensive set? Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 @Deathleech: The minifig count for that particular set was never really specified Some of us (including me) expected 8-9 minifigs based on the observation of previous sets of that size, the Toy Fair reports however didn't mention any numbers. I think one of the reports went like "it includes Bilbo among a couple of other figs", hardly specific I'd say Quote
deskp Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 With the Erebor set having it's figure count being so off (was reported 8 or 9 and we only got 5. It wasnt reported, it was assumed based on other sets with same price. what was reported was "bilbo and a couple dwarves" wich is very much what we got ;) Quote
Lynx Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Rumours of this set made me frequent the historic themes forum for the first time in many months. I was hoping to have some of Erebor's interior as display piece, and the throne room makes the most sense. I think the section looks good. The limited articulation of small LEGO characters made it necessary to have studs, rather than a nicer looking, flat surface for the king to sit on. I can easily swap Dain's legs (hoping we'll get him in LEGO shape) with that of a larger figure for display, and this part of the set gets a solid 8/10 from me. Fortunately, the mining part can easily be detached from the throne. These two areas should never be connected - at least not horizontally. I hope LEGO has not repeated their Mines of Moria act of using the dwarven letters to write out some 'insider joke'. The mining part, in general, has the appearance of a big, ugly lump of LEGO bricks assembled unimaginatively. It is presumably nice to play with for the little ones, but for an adult looking for LEGO that captures scenes from a beloved movie, it constitutes a superfluous collection of bricks. I would never display this part and would rate it a 1/10 from a pure aesthetic point-of-view. I have no complaints about the minifigures. I like the new torsos and, in Balin's and Dwalin's case, reclaimed weapons of the master smiths of Erebor. Balin, as my favourite dwarf, seems to get an updated mace, which makes me happy. Smaug, on the other hand, makes me cringe. I completely realise the dilemma LEGO faced with him: most customers would prefer a molded version, as opposed to a brick-build dragon aimed at adult collectors. As such, it must have been incredibly difficult to design a combination of menacing villain in cute LEGO shape. A massive problem was always the wyvern style chosen by Peter Jackson and his team. I think LEGO Smaug would appear indefinitely better with a pair of front legs. The final product looks, as others have pointed out, at best like a playmobil toy, or more cynical like a 5$ toy I one can pick up at any dollar shop across Australia - minus battery-facilitated roaring sound and flashing fire breath. As an adult LEGO fan, I like sets with high display value. The tower of Orthanc resides in my living room, and even non-LEGO and non-LotR fans refrain from any negative remarks. Most importantly, my wife understood why I wanted to spend so much money on this 'toy', and any of our friends' children immediately notice that this item is not meant to be disassembled and played with. The Smaug set fits none of these bills. It only resembles something out of the Hobbit movie to hardcore fans that search for similarities. Its main piece, a bright red toy dragon, will understandably be picked up and thrown around my house by any child. What the set lacks the most is gold. When thinking of Smaug, I think of a treasure hoard as wide as the eye can see. I wish LEGO had used some golden baseplates with some decorative treasure as the dragon's lair. As it is, I see no value in this set from an adult fan's perspective. This, of course, does not mean that the set is not a good play set for 5-10 year olds. Finally, I expect the Australian price to be around $200-250. There's no way I could justify spending that much money on so little value. If I had a LEGO budget, I'd rather invest an extra 100 dollars and purchase my first Star Wars set in 15 years with the incredibly well-done Ewok Village. Quote
Mike S Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The legs are definitely a new mould, it's especially noticeable when you compare the claws with the ones the Castle dragon sports: Thanks for the comparison pics! Smaug rocks! Quote
Boettner Builds Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 $130!??!!? Holy POOP!!!! SO not worth it! I'll wait until is on sale or clearance! Quote
Doctor_ocks Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 ... ?? Why? Because we would have ended up with a more to scale model. I really like the molded Smaug, but I'd have preferred a brick built one - even if it were a UCS style $200-$300 model. My kids will like this one a lot though. Playability is much better with something like this. Seeing Smaug from the top makes him look much Better than in the very first picture. This is a relief! He is definitely longer than other Dragons and does not Look fat from above. Yeah agreed. Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I'm new to the whole LEGO thing so how exactly do the VIP points work? If you register online or in the Lego store as a VIP member, you get a number and eventually a card. Present your number or card to the Lego store cashier or make sure you are logged in when making online purchases. Normally, every dollar spent is one VIP point. Every 100 VIP points earned is a $5 reward which can be accumulated. In regards to the Lonely Mountain set, if October is the release month AND the Saturday before Thanksgiving repeats the Triple VIP offer like it did last year, that would mean this set earns 387 VIP points, which is almost $20 in rewards. That money can be applied to any future purchase. It would soften the blow of a $130 set to some extent at least. Quote
azog15 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Appreciate it man Here are some better pictures. http://news.toyark.com/2014/07/24/sdcc-2014-lego-hobbit-lonely-mountain-comic-con-booth-images-130915 It definitely looks like the Dwarves are wearing some made up armor Quote
atreyu2112 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Smaug looks great! I do think the price is a bit steep and 7 minifigs should be included, but after seeing the actual display - Smaug is BIG. The pillars and the forge look to be taller than Moria set pillars & door, and yet Smaug stands just as tall. I'm happy with the set, & I'll be getting it the first day I can. Quote

azog15 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Kili is wearing his belt along with some royal dwarven torso armor. Wasn't there some similar armor in the game? Quote
Shroffy123 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 The Armour especially filli all blue and dawlin all green make we think of the jelly bean knights from kk1 Quote
Brickmamba Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Smaug should be the main focus of the smaug set, a larger brick built dragon would have been more impressive. Smaug just looks like an accessory, a figurine in a playset designed for 12yos as opposed to for AFOLs. Quite disappointing, suffice to say the representation of smaug deserved a lot more than this. Quote
Royv Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I sure hope that Bard variant doesn't stay exclusive. Really don't feel like shelling out $150-$300 for a figure! Quote
deskp Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I sure hope that Bard variant doesn't stay exclusive. Really don't feel like shelling out $150-$300 for a figure! it never was exclusive ;)enjoy your own + a full set for merely 30usd come october! Quote
Hive Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Smaug just looks like an accessory, a figurine in a playset designed for 12yos as opposed to for AFOLs. Uhm yes, because that's what he is. I too am dissapointed that a set of this pretty large price isn't bigger and doesn't include more minifigs. But I like the colours used and think that Smaug is about as impressive as anyone realistically could have expected. Best molded dragon as of yet, what more can one really ask? It's not an adult-oriented lego.com exclusive, after all. Quote
legofreak86 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Yeah its the armour seen from the set photos of the third film. Clearly his battle of the five armies sets. I like the armour actually and I like how accurate Bilbo is in the torso and the dark brown trousers. Is that a mithril vest I spy in the printing of his torso? That would make sense as it would make him a film 3 figure. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 How would everyone have felt if Lego had put Smaug in the $30 Lake-town set and bumped it's price up to 60 or even 70 dollars? They also could of put him in the Lake-town set and lowered the piece count down to what a $20 set usually has to make up for such a large molded creature being in it? Would this have been feasible? How much is the Smaug mold really worth on it's own? $30-50? The way I see it if Lego had done this then they could of used more pieces on Erebor. We could of possibly gotten the front gate, some statues, and the throne room with more minifigures? It could of been based more around the Bo5A and the $60 Bo5A set could of been a proper $30 army builder one like previous army builders. It also could have been an add on to Erebor, much like Uruk-hai Army was to Helm's Deep. Quote
ThaneKrios Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I start to like this set after having seen these new pictures. They should have done the eyes of Smaug more yellow and more "vicious" than "angry" Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) That printing For me, Smaug alone is worth this sets price tag, everything else is just the icing on the cake Edit: Ace from fbtb.net confirms that the Bard minifig is most likely a preview: http://www.fbtb.net/2014/07/25/sdcc-bard-the-bowman-legos-not-so-exclusive-minifigure/ If only the other three were previews too...
