hey guys!

I made a Pirates Chess review for my LUG forum.

take a look

http://forum.kockice...=149941#p149941

Thanks for the review! Lots of nice baseplates in that set at least. Seems like the skimped a lot on some things, so many of the same faceprints on the bluecoats. Still, would've bought them if they'd had even the unprinted shaktos.

I picked up 70410 and 70412 at TRU the other day. I'm enjoying them, but they definitely feel like the skeletons of a set, not a full set. Trying to bulk them up myself now.

I finally built a couple of the sets last night, the outpost and the fort. I'll probably write more detailed reviews for S@H. Overall, I think the sets are very good. Here are a few things I've noticed:

Good:

• The stud shooters are awesome. This is my first time using them. I really like them.

• The bluecoat flag is fantastic. It's just like the original, except the edges are much better defined thanks to the yellow outline.

• Dark red masonry bricks.

• The new pirate flag is also pretty sharp, and I think it's awesome that they made both small and large flags for both sides.

• The color quality control seems to be getting much better. Both parts of the treasure chest were the exact same color. (Last time I bought a set with a reddish brown treasure chest, the lid was much paler.)

• The new oars are very durable, feel good, and look good.

• Every set in this wave has at least one cannon. As a kid, I always wished I had more cannons. (As an adult, I think I've gone WAY overboard on them because of this. pir_laugh2.gif)

• The lanterns look very good – much better than the mere flame so many sets had in the '90s.

• The crab in 70410 is a nice touch. It feels like a very high quality piece. It's very heavy.

• The soldier torsos, like the flags, are very true to the originals, yet improved.

• The pirate with the green shirt is an excellent variation of the old blue vest pirate of the '90s.

• 70410 and 70412 look very sharp when connected together. If they had included a blue 32x32 baseplate, this would have really made a complete '90s style set.

• The robot arm used to hold the lamp seems to be a new mold. The robot arms I got in Benny's Spaceship and the white classic space minifigure set had no clutch power at all. These new robot arms hold very well. (They also feel like a different kind of plastic to me.)

• This theme includes two different colored rowboats, reddish brown and dark blue. I think it's nice that they included some variation in this wave.

• The 4-studded fence piece is a great improvement over the old ones. I never understood why that piece was missing two studs.

Neutral:

• The palm tree doesn't look as bad in person as it does in the photos, but I would still prefer the old ones.

• The tree frog can't actually face upward like the picture shows because he's attached to a spinning pin.

• 70412 uses 2x8 plates on the tower to avoid adding another part to the set, but 6x8 plates would work much better.

• Personally, I would have rather gotten an extra soldier in 70410 instead of the "sergant" [sic], but I'm sure there are a lot of kids who can't afford the pirate ship who will appreciate the variety.

• 70412 is a little too rectangular for my taste. I like how Eldorado Fortress used a lot of angled bricks.

• I think the raft in 70410 would look better with more barrels instead of the round bricks.

Bad:

• In 70412, the soldier's shako is covering half of his eyebrows, which looks really weird (he'd look much better without the eyebrows).

• The new bandanas are dumb.

• There's not enough room for the minifigures to stand in the fort (note that the back of the instructions shows several of the minifigures standing in positions that don't work in real life). This is especially true in front of the jail and around the cannon in 70412.

• The minifigures aren't happy. Even three of the good guys aren't smiling – the admiral, the governor, and soldier #4.

• No gold coins or bars.

• Freaking catapult in 70410. That mold should be destroyed and never used again.

• The epaulettes on the soldiers should be red. The white really clashes with the rest of the minifigure.

• The pirates with the striped shirts look crappy to me. The design is inconsistent with the tone of the rest of the theme. Their bandanas, faces, and torsos look cartoonish in a very non-Lego way. (The same goes for the pirate cook.)

JODAWILL: I agree with all the “good” points you say, this line is awesome and it looks more like the 90’s sets than the 2009 ones, which is a very good thing to old timers like me.

But of all the “cons” you said only the tree and the lack of gold bothers me. I didn’t notice the lack of gold however before you mentioned it; the gold was one of the best things that ever came with the 90’s sets, and now I feel upset that the new sets don’t have it. It can’t be that impossible to include some chrome gold coins in LEGO sets, is it? They did it with the previous Castle line, so why not the more deserving Pirates line?

Yeah, I have no idea why they didn't include the coins. I believe the coins included in the latest castle sets are also from a new mold, so it doesn't make any sense to me to not include them in the pirates sets.

I bought all the sets (except the chess set) and built the ship and the 2 forts. I'm pretty disappointed.... The ship just feels "incomplete" and only comes with 1 musket!!! Really?? Just one? I find it odd I see so many reviews saying this ship is great, it seems like this theme got so much hate when prelim pics came out, and now that they are here in the flesh, so many people actually like them. I'm the opposite, I liked the pics, and thought the finished product would be better, but I'm really disappointed with how plain and pathetic they look. The tree's are especially horrid.

Ship is certainly not "great" but it's ok for those who are searcing for their first pirate ship (only one you can buy MISB for reasonable price). For me it's just parts pack, like her predecessor, 6243, which i modded to 10211 size.

Other are good because they are not so expensive and contain a lot minifigures, which are for me highlight of this wave (I'm bluecoats guy).

Do you have any pictures?

I just ordered all the sets (plus an extra Soldier's Outpost) from a Bricklink store located in the Netherlands. Hope they arrive next week. How come only stores in the Netherlands seem to have them? There were three Dutch stores that had them, and no other places. :S Anyways, I hope the sets are of good quality.

I bought all the sets on Sunday at my local store... (Surrounded by Marvel fans).

I love the new figs. I don't understand all the hate on the white epaulets. They look great to me. I thought the 2009 redcoat/blue epaulet combo clashed.

I love that you get 10 of each faction. equality!

They've made some improvements to various ship parts that i really like. (my last pirates purchase was in the early 90's)

My only gripes:

-the captain can't fit in his quarters on the ship unless he is sitting or you take the feather out of his cap.

-the big 2009 shark was cooler

-the bluecoats need a better base (like El Dorado) - hopefully that or their own galleon will be a future release.

-I miss the old rope bridge piece and the old palm tree.

I just got the 'juniors' set. What a bang for your buck! You get a printed wall piece with window, a rare black treasure chest ,a rare gray barrel, a boat, a shark, a new? map tile for just $13 CAD. I will definitely pick another one of these in the future.

Oh no! I totally forgot to get the juniors set when I was at the store, didn't even look to see if they had it...

It seems that many people think this Juniors set is a good deal, so I might as well get one next time I'm out. I need more weapons to add my Redcoats/Bluecoats/Spanish/Pirates/Merchants anyway.

I hope that the chess set will be available in the netherlands

Yes. It's not completely as I want it to be, but other things have priority now.

Nice one!!

Are you planning to change the light blue to a dark red?

I hope I can get the Chess set, and if I can, I must Bricklink a few Shako's for the Bluecoats.

Although sort of related to the new sets, do you think that the new Green Sleeved Pirate torso, combined with a Shako, red epaulettes and white legs, could make a good Fictional Greencoat?

Is there anyone who knows if and when the new Lego Pirates sets will hit the Nordic countries (Sweden for me)?

I really want to buy them but the only way to do it for the moment are either through amazon uk or Lego S@H, both who tends to be more expensive than the store where I am usually buying my Lego sets.
