jamesster Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) Hey, Imperial Soldiers (bluecoats). Neat. Minifigures are obviously just placeholders with existing parts, but they're definitely representing new bluecoats. Edited September 14, 2014 by jamesster Quote
Robert8 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Oh lord... This has to be the biggest let down in years. It's Castle 2013 all over again! Why? Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) It's Castle 2013 all over again! No, Castle 2013 at least came with a decent supply of generic bricks(except for their refusing to use the classic sword ). This isn't Castle 2013 to Castle 2007, this is Galidor to Bionicle. Lyichir Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Dark. Red. Masonry bricks. People can say what they like about the set designs. But the forts, at least, use actual building elements for their detailing instead of oversized printed or stickered wall panels. That's a win in my book. Quote

But the forts, at least, use actual building elements for their detailing instead of oversized printed or stickered wall panels. That's a win in my book. Different people, different books. I like the panels simply because they allow for more interior space. Also, not everyone can afford huge expenditures on basic bricks(and there are reasons why I can't use Bricklink), and panels allow for far larger walls than otherwise might be possible. Quote
jamesster Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) It's been a while, but I recall people complaining about Castle 2013 using too many wall panels, when the first pics came out... Now we get a more kid-oriented Pirates that uses bricks instead of wall panels, and among the first complaints are "I miss the wall panels". Ooookay then. Edited September 14, 2014 by jamesster Quote
Ridge Montante Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Yea, the prelim pictures are not the best. But I'll still be picking them up. It is a pirate theme after all. If anything I can mix them with my existing pirate sets and have a decent layout. Quote
Matteo1130 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Hmmm is there any chance these are not the real kits? Maybe some fake to see how the public reacts? 'Cause these kits looks like put together in 10 minuts. Low minifig count etc... I don't think I'm buying any... Quote
TalonCard Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Thoughts: Y'know, the two larger sets are pretty uninspired. But the three smaller sets look like a lot of fun; and they're just as good as anything we've had so far at that size. (Shipwreck Defense in particular is pretty sweet.) I suspect that once they're assembled the raft and skull island sets will look better than the pictures suggest. I'm torn about the brick-built palm tree. It looks silly from some angles, but pretty nice in others. I'm excited at what looks to be bluecoats, plenty of wigs, and a new Jolly Roger. I'm hoping we'll see some awesome new minifigures; these are very much preliminary. There seems to be a female soldier. Miranda Valentina, perhaps? I think any fears about stud shooters are misplaced; they seem to be used as small cannon in addition to, rather than instead of, regular shooting cannon and flintlocks. I'm excited about adding these to my collection. I understand why a lot of people might be frustrated--I too was hoping for something a little bit different so soon after POTC and 2009 Pirates. Still, these are are a lot like the Pirate sets I grew up with, and I can't wait for them to hit stores. TC Quote
Commissioner Gordon Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 no noo nooooooooooooo. this is worse than castle 2013! i was really hoping for at least a decent pirates wave. oh well the ship isn't too bad , and seeing as i have never bought a lego pirates ship before i might pick it up. Quote
HomerJSimpson Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Oh... Part of me says that somebody just edited the old sets with some of those, the pirate ship is EXACTLY the same, just with different colors. If they are real, then Lego just lost a sale. I'll spend my money on more super car sets than these... Quote

David Thomsen Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Hee hee hee, so much - what's the word they use again? - so much butthurt. The sails are clearly the same ones from Brickbeard's Bounty, so they are preliminary and might change. So there's a possibly they won't also be white and red, because the ships will look very similar if they both have white and red sails. Whether I get the set or not actually depends of what the sails look like, the rest of the ship is different enough in colour from the BBB but if the sails look too similar than I probably won't bother. That's a perfectly adequate use for the stud shooter after all, much more sensible than having an entire cannon in the rowboat, from a common sense perspective. And yes, I also prefer brick-build walls to wall panels, especially when it means they can include interesting elements like masonry bricks. Although I would have accepted wall panels too, I guess I'm just easy to please. I'm not even looking at the minifigs, they are clearly all prelims. Although there does appear to be one bluecoat female at the fort, and that does intrigue me... normally the soldier females are just civilians/wives/daughters in dresses, but this one appears to be fighting. Hopefully that's not misleading. My only complaint based on these prelims is that the fort is a bit small, and that's unlikely to change, and there doesn't appear to be any way to connect the fort to the outpost after all, but this could change - there's something odd going on with the lower left corner of the fort, beneath the bluecoat. Together they would make up the size of 6242 Soldiers' Fort, which was also kind of small but never mind. Also the giant skull looks kind of bland, in a knockoff brand kind of way. But that could also change. Quote
BFN Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Most of these aren't too interesting, but if one were just starting their LEGO Pirates collection, these aren't a bad source of minifigs, cannons, or any of that really. Actually, the fort and ship seem like improvements over the 2009 ones (I'll probably get a lot of flak for that, but the 2009 ship's back looked really weird...). I picked up everything Pirate-wise I wanted in 2009, so I'll probably be skipping this, but all the same, it's not... horrible, really. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Obviously these are ridiculously preliminary, but I think that the shipwreck defense and soldiers outpost actually look really good. Quote
David Thomsen Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Just realised how odd the Shipwreck Defense set is - the wall appears to be facing out to the sea, and is being attacked by a cannon that is clearly land-based... in the picture they've explained it as the cannon being located on a little outcrop of beach, but without that land for reference it's going to look a bit odd... In any case you'd never be able to move the cannon over sand on wheels like that. So disappointed. It's like 2004 Castle meets 2004 Pirates all over again. ( ) Quote
TeufelHund Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) This is a pretty uninspiring selection - most sets just look like inferior revisions of the 2009 sets. I guess that's fine for the kids too young to enjoy pirates sets from back then but doesn't leave much for the AFOLs to get excited about The figures do look very prelimary mind you, so here's hoping we gets some interesting new faces/torsos and perhaps some animals (crocs, parrots, crabs, krakens, sharks etc) in interesting new colours. klinton Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I actually don't mind the Soldier's Fort. It's full what I expect from a 'Pirates' set. I'll be grabbing a couple of these. The rest though....yeah, I dunno what to say. Quote
yys4u Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I guess I stand alone in liking these sets. But honestly I'm such a die hard pirates fan they could release anything pirates and I'd buy it. I like how every set comes with a blue coat, good army building potential. I think my standards were lower also cause after seeing the rumored price on these sets I knew we wouldn't get any large or intricate structures. For the price point given, these seem decent. I expect them to change too as these are obviously very early prelim images. Hoping the ship changes the most actually, as that one does look very similar to the 2009 release. I assume the sails will change, but overall it still looks similar. Quote
Blakstone Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 To me, most sets are just minifigs and assorted brick for MOCs. So these sets don't disappoint me. However, once we can see more than two of the minifig prints, that opinion may change. I am happy with the blue coats as I built quite a force of Revolutionary Soldiers from CMF. That will be a nice accent. Quote
Faefrost Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I'm not sure what everyone was expecting, especially after hearing the names and price points? The ship is almost exactly what we expected. And honestly it does not look bad for the price point. In order for us to get more Pirate sets there must be a new generation of Pirates fans. They have to start somewhere. About the only sets that I don't like the initial look of is the Soldiers Fort, which looks too paired down, and the Shipwreck Defense which looks like nothing. The rest are actually pretty good. The Soldiers Outpost looks great. I think we will be much more pleased once we see the minifig prints and final parts. And heck, we're AFOLs we can certainly detail these up. The ship looks like a better starting point than either PotC ship? At least it has rigging on both masts. Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Also the giant skull looks kind of bland, in a knockoff brand kind of way. But that could also change. The skull is lifted directly from the 1996 Volcano Island. Interestingly, this will be the third time they've used this build. The first was in the original set, and the second was a cleverly placed quick-build in LEGO Universe's Gnarled Forest. In order for us to get more Pirate sets there must be a new generation of Pirates fans. They have to start somewhere. Agreed. But these don't even give anyone a place to start... And heck, we're AFOLs we can certainly detail these up. True, but I and a lot of FOLs enjoy sets out of the box, and "detailing" them separately. I would honestly be somewhat embarrassed to have these on display, in stark contrast to the 2009 line. Quote
MagPiesRUs Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 The biggest disappointment for me is the smallest set. Only two figures? I was hoping for a nice army builder like the Castle Forest Ambush, which had four figures for the same price. At the moment, it doesn't look like there'll be a cheap way to amass the new bluecoats. I quite like the Soldier's Outpost set though, the dark red brick pieces are a cool update on the classic fort aesthetic and the raft looks nice enough. Plus it includes what appears to be a drunken octopus. The teaser image TLC released earlier in the year featured white and red sails, and looking at the bowsprit, it looks like the same ship as the prelim. So unless that was also preliminary, it looks like we'll be getting the same colour scheme. Quote
David Thomsen Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) Don't forget about the Juniors set! I found it by searching for the German word for 'treasure'. Probably not that noteworthy, really, unless it comes with an exclusive torso like the 2009 equivalent did. But you can't tell by the prelim, of course. It does look like it might come with a large printed brick, though? Like this piece that came with the Princess Castle: But fort themed. Might appeal to some people. Pulp Detective Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I don't get the disappointment this isn't something I didn't expect actually those sets make excited and I can't wait for them and yes they could have been better but this is what we got and I'm fine with it. Quote
