David Thomsen Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Hmm nope, to me the parts that are identical are the parts that are required to make the ship look like a ship, and mean the ships will compliment each other nicely. Quote
jodawill Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 The SES had colours on the ship itself that matches the black and white sails. This new ship doesn't; in fact, it's colours doesn't really lend itself to the sails being anything but red and white. There's simply too much red in it. But I'd love to be wrong on this, as differently coloured sails is about the only thing that can save it from being a poor ripoff of Brickbeard's Bounty. And honestly, I think that those people saying that they can see tons of differences between the two ships (as it looks now, in the prelim pics) are fooling themselves. Sure, there are subtle differences and variations - but 99 % of the build is exactly the same, and the colours aren't even that different. I don't mind LEGO being lazy and rehashing an older ship, but why on earth not do the BSB or SES then? What dissapoints me the most is that the stern is identical to that of the last one, even down to the weirdly placed cannon. Skull's Eye Schooner also had a lot of red in it. Quote

Zeya Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) I just dug up the 5 main set photos online. But I haven't been able to find the junior set everyone is referring to. Can someone PM me with a link for that one Edit: Someone linked it to me now. My take on this... I really wish there was more "part count" here and more substantial builds. It's just a bit too small; I can see one or two really small sets but the medium sets should simply be more robust. I will say that these leaked prelims are really preliminary. There isn't a finalized part on any minfigure; you can hardly tell what they're going to be in the final set except for just a vague idea. And as someone else pointed out, there are placeholder elements like the frogs on the palm tree. But that's the silver lining, because these sets are small. And only 5 of them? Any others will be even tinier polybags maybe. I hope there's a store exclusive that is bigger. Probably asking too much for a UCS-style set like the IFS from 2009/2010. Did anyone notice the kraken clutching the bottle? That's my kind of lego pirate comedy! :) Does anyone still have, or know where to find, preliminary images of the 2009 pirates? I'm sure there were more changes than just the torsos and flags and sails. Great idea. +1 to this - please someone dig up the 2009 prelims and do a comparison. Probably can't post them directly though, even though they're ancient... Ha well, the two soldier's fort sets are going to be ok I guess. I quite like them so far. Also, bluecoats and a female imperial, that's going to be fun! I'm jazzed about the female imperial. I hope that's what she is. Could also be a "governor's daughter" type of character. These sets are pretty basic, but when it comes to the Pirates theme, I buy the sets for the figures, and upgrade the builds. I'm happy about the bluecoats, but I'm not happy we aren't getting a monkey at all-only a joke :) Hey you aren't the only one keeping an eye out for a monkey. :) I also love the parrots. I'm not too keen on the giant squid / krakens though. I guess I'm partial to the old animals from my youth. I've seen preliminary pictures of sets before, but I've never seen anything as hilarious as the chef torso for a pirate. He even has a pan instead of a cutlass in the largest set! The frog that is seemingly glued to that palm tree hit me funny too. Yeah, it's pretty funny. But keep in mind there are existing sets with ships cooks. Well at least one anyway. This guy from IFS: http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?M=pi120 He's depicted in the box art and/or instructions as wielding a knife and he's basically implied to be the ship's cook and/or pirate turncoat perhaps. So maybe they're going to take that concept and ham it up a little. :) Edited September 17, 2014 by Zeya Quote
AlphaQuad Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 There might be a toysrus exclusive like they did back in 2009 with the Shipwreck Hideout Quote
Commissioner Gordon Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 i guess i should post an apology to lego. after the initial shock of seeing the sets being so small and incomplete once i look at them again they aren't all that bad, the builds dont appear to be finished and once we see the new bluecoats and pirate prints it may not be too bad. sadly it still probably is the equivalent of castle 2013. tonif430 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Love the new photos!!! I didn't remember I owned one of the pirates until i saw the leaks Quote
David Thomsen Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 (edited) The SES had colours on the ship itself that matches the black and white sails. This new ship doesn't; in fact, it's colours doesn't really lend itself to the sails being anything but red and white. There's simply too much red in it. I disagree, the BBB had almost no red in and it had red sails, the presence of lots of red bricks suggests to me that the sails will be a different colour from red. I've been looking at my version of the BB with the sails tinted from red to black and it really does look 'right' for the ship to me. Look closely at pictures of both, the stern is practically identical. I agree that the shape is the same and so are a lot of the structural elements, but every minor detail that could have been changed has been changed. The hull appears to be the darker shade of brown that the IF had. It doesn't include any log bricks or fence pieces. It seems to have one door to the cabin rather than two. It has round bricks projected from the side of the ship. It doesn't have jousting bars to fence off some of the areas. The cabin appears to be slightly shorter, but the image says it has 725 bricks to BB's 592, so it hopefully has a lot of fine detail we can't see. We'll have to see the final images of course, a lot of this is just speculation. The one thing I agree with a lot of people is that I would have preferred larger sets, including one large fort instead of medium and small fort-sized units. That is disappointing, but hopefully this is the start of an ongoing Pirate theme rather than just a one-off like 2009 Pirates. Although I think there's a large probability that we'll see another D2C ship for the soldiers, although this is also just speculation. Edited September 17, 2014 by David Thomsen Quote
David Thomsen Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Also, has anyone speculated on what the bowler hat could be a stand in for? I notice no one is wearing a tricorn in this wave, so it could be a new tricorn. Although if that were the case, why wouldn't they just use the old tricorn as a stand in... Whatever it is, I'm just excited that there appear to be more secrets to be revealed. Quote
jodawill Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Does anyone have the 2009 Pirates preliminary images? It would be good to compare them. Quote
Israel Hands Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I couldn't see the sets in the prelim link, but I have found this alternative site with images http://needlessessentialsonline.com/new-lego-2015-pirates-chima-ninjago-and-ultra-agents-first-images/ Quote
Steven Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Must say I'm quite disappointed that the blue coats didn't get their own ship. Quote

If you want those insanely detailed 10,000+ piece models where you can't touch them the wrong way or they fall apart, you can build one yourself. Edited September 18, 2014 by Mr. President Quote

Hah agreed, people tend to forget that the Pirates line was always targerted for children that's why the sets are so simple and will ever be like that but I don't mind simple sets after all that's why I love this theme so much simple but great,so yea I can't wait to see the official sets pictures. lego tripper Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'm guessing the frogs are stand-ins for a new chameleon mold or something of the like. Quote

There is a difference between over the top wants/expectations and what we are seeing here. These prelims look like they weren't even trying. I mean really not trying. They honestly look like the pics from kids in lego club mag. Quote

The outpost does look like they were given a random assortment like the Brickmaster set and asked to make a small fortification out of it, but as LOTR343 says, these are prelims. I think if this were confirmed as the final set I would share some of the disappointment of other people, but for now I'm happy to stay positive about the things that I do like and optimistic that the final version of these sets will be even better. Pulp Detective Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) And don't forget that there is a big possibility that we'll get new molds for an example:the bowler hat(maybe a new tricorn like David suggested),the frogs(a new kind of animal I suppose),the shark, croc and the octopus(I hope this isn't their final version). David Thomsen Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'm guessing the frogs are stand-ins for a new chameleon mold or something of the like. I just remembered that there already is a chameleon in Rapunzel's castle. Although it might be too 'Friendsified' an animal to be included with the pirates. Also, there is such a thing as a tree frog, so the frog standing on a tree isn't necessarily too incongruous. Quote

Sir Brickalot Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Wow. These prelims are very disappointing. What happened to Treasure Island?! The Pirate ship looks boring and repetitive, and the fort is not a fort. The best set here is the Shipwreck Defence, the smallest one. Quote
The_Cook Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 In terms of structures, what you see in the preliminaries is what you're going to get. The printed parts on the minifigs obviously aren't there and there are a couple of stand-in pieces (such as the bowler hat) where we expect there to be a piece from a new mould, however the structures are made out of standard bricks; they don't need revising. The designers have obviously been given the brief to keep the models simple enough for young kids (the target audience) and keep the part count (and therefore the price) down as well. The part/price ratio is commensurate with other non-licensed sets released during 2014. Be thankful that you've got something Piratey, TLG are under no obligation to release Pirate sets and they wouldn't if they didn't think it would sell amongst their target child audience. Quote

If you want those insanely detailed 10,000+ piece models where you can't touch them the wrong way or they fall apart, you can build one yourself. Is expecting something at least like the Castle 2008/09 line for Pirates too much? This and 2009 were barely above Creator/Junior level, 2004 even had an actual Junior Pirates line which failed. I just want some okay line. It´s not like 2008 or 2010 Castle is so much harder to get kids interested in compared to 2013 Castle. Hell, 2013 Castle failed hard, Lego should know to keep juniorization out of their lines, that only ever worked out for City. Regardless of preliminary or not, this is just Pirates 2009 with redcoats swapped with bluecoats, a middle sized fort swapped for two tiny forts, the skull loo on the ships sails are on the lower sails instead of the higher sails, the lantern on the tiny boat in the pirate ship is on the front instead of the back and the gun holder is in the back instead of the front. They even changed the palm trees to mechanical looking technic parts for no reason. It just looks bad, why couldn´t they use those flexible pieces like in the 90s again? The only positives I see here are spring canons in every set and less rainbow/cartoon colors on the pirates (the latter can still be ruined). Edited September 18, 2014 by Navy Trooper Fenson Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 This and 2009 were barely above Creator/Junior level... I liked 2009. The sets were colorful, and the buildings/ships looked nice and the techniques used were actually clever on occasion, and at their very least, on par with 1991-7 Pirates. I consider the line as a whole equal to 2008 Castle. Of course, I do have a lot of LU nostalgia that perhaps influences that a bit. I still remember seeing those first 6 IGN videos, way back from early beta/absolute end of alpha...Gnarled Forest was gorgeous, and the poor video quality made it look even more enchanting(that sounds impossible, but it isn't.). Man, those were fun days... Quote
