Sigolf Brimabane Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 What makes you guys think those might be old coins? I can't tell from the picture. Wishful thinking most likely. I doubt we'll see those again :/ Quote
Humdrum Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 (edited) I must have this set as a collecter. As allways the good stuff, like this set, it will maybe only available in the US. I hope I am wrong, the Astronaut was the same. Now Soooo expansive in europe As Jodawill said, the classic space set was available in Europe months before it was released in the USA. And it looks like this will be the case again, we'll be seeing this pirate set in Europe next month. I don't know if this has always been the case in the past, but it seems Lego mixes the release dates per continent for some of the polybags. Unless they're directly linked to a set, like the cookie smuggler or mini mini cooper. Next month we'll also be seeing the SW AT-DP polybag in Europe, which the USA allready had a few months back. The odd thing is it was available through normal sales channels at the same time. I think I saw the AT-DP polybag in Belgian stores in january for a price of 3 or 4 euro. So why bother spending a lot of money to get it for free next month? :) Edited June 18, 2015 by Humdrum Quote
David Thomsen Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 What makes you guys think those might be old coins? I can't tell from the picture. I don't think it'll be the old coins on a sprue, just the revised loose coins. But at least they're coins, meaning that they're not entirely out of production. Still a mystery, though... If the coins were available, why not use them? Maybe they just had to make a choice and black tricorns and gold coins were at the bottom of the list. Quote
Captain Dee Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I have to wonder if TLG realized, too late, that every sensible Pirates fan wanted chrome gold - essentially, having pearl gold only was a mistake in our collective opinions - and went back to the old standard for this one release. Considering the fact that the coins first appeared in this theme, I can't imagine they were "at the bottom of the list." Likewise I'm going to declare the absence of black tricornes and monkeys a big mistake. They've always been part of the theme. (Well, the black tricornes weren't used in '96 with the Armada, but you get the point.) As for the photo - it sure looks like chrome gold to me. Quote

There actually were several sets in 1996 featuring the tricorn, but they were used for the pirates. http://brickset.com/sets/6289-1/Red-Beard-Runner http://brickset.com/sets/6296-1/Shipwreck-Island http://brickset.com/sets/6248-1/Volcano-Island http://brickset.com/sets/1747-1/Treasure-Surprise As for the coins, it does look like chrome gold to me. I thought people were saying they were the ones from a sprue. I highly doubt that's the case, but it definitely looks like chrome gold. In my opinion, that's the only outstanding feature in this set. I actually find it insulting that they're trying to pass this off as a retro set. As I've said before, there's nothing retro about this set. They could have at least used the same flag they used in the regular 2015 Pirates sets. Using that cartoonish piece of crap is so… uncouth. This set would probably be much better received if it was sold in a polybag at grocery stores. This is the kind of thing I would love to find on clearance somewhere. Quote
Sigolf Brimabane Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I agree, it's in the vein of the new pirates sets, nothing about it looks retro. :) Quote
Captain Dee Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I stand corrected on the '96 tricornes. It's silly, because I have several of the figures in question. And I also have a hard time seeing anything retro about it. Not that it's a bad set per se, but it doesn't exactly look classic. Nice torso though. Quote
David Thomsen Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Don't forget that you get this set for free with another purchase. You're not paying anything for it, it's just a bonus and from that perspective it's actually a neat little set, especially since it has a new torso. I doubt they'd resurrect extinct 'retro' pieces just for a freebie. And anything that potentially introduces Pirates to new people is a welcome addition. Quote
TalonCard Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 So Series 14 of the Collectable Minifigures is going to have a pretty neat zombie pirate captain. I love all the little Pirate surprises we're getting this month. :D Adrick Quote
David Thomsen Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 (edited) That picture has been around for a long time and at least one of them (the skeleton) seems to have had a minor redesign, I've only seen this image of four final ones though and the other three seem to be the same, with the addition of a skirt to the witch and a cape to the vampire. But the zombie pirate does look quite final, just needs the addition of a sword (or some other kind of zombie pirate appropriate weapon). If you swap out the hands and the head for yellow ones he could possibly make him into some kind of really unfortunate pirate captain, although I think the grey spots on his coat are meant to be his skin. I'll be leaving him as he is, though - my Pirate theme is supernatural-friendly. :) I really hope that some time they have just a generic pirate though who isn't a captain. So far we've had one pirate captain, one swashbuckler and now a zombie captain. And the swashbuckler kind of stands out from the rest of the Pirates. Actually, you know what would be cool? A female swashbuckler. Edited June 22, 2015 by David Thomsen Quote

Maybe some kind of bluecoat Ensign, or a cannoneer or colonial sailers different from the pirates. Actually it's kind of weird that 'Revolutionary Soldier' was an army-building figure but they didn't give him any kind of opposite. Pretty much every figure kind of figure that can have an opposite does have one. Knight has evil knight. Wizard has evil wizard. Cowboys and Indians. Spaceman and Space Villain. How come Revolutionary Soldier never got... I don't know... Colonial Soldier or something? Unless his rival is the Pirate Captain? But then why call him Revolutionary Soldier and not Soldier? Quote

David Thomsen Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Another look at the exclusive Pirate set in the August Store Calendar. He appears to have this head which hasn't been in any Pirate sets yet. Pretty sure those are the new style chrome coins. Quote
CaptainToad Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Does anyone know if this is lego store only or if its gonna be available on the lego shop website as well? Quote
azog Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 It should be both because I ordered $95 in lego sets and I got the winter solider Quote

Boettner Builds Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 It IS a new torso! I like it very much!!! :) Quote
Humdrum Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 So we need a 'classic retro vintage whatnot' reissue to get new parts? I can see the humo(u)r in this Quote
James Wellington Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I don't know about you guys, but I'd really, REALLY like some new islanders, and Imperial Armada. Like I'm really happy that we got bluecoats, and I hope that a flagship or trading post will come out for them sometime in the future, but I want it like the old days... a combination of all the factions (Pirates, Imperial Guards, Imperial Soldiers, Imperial Armada, Islanders) in the sets, and more than 5 sets (excluding the chess set) in the pirate line. Maybe it's only a dream... but, I hope some day, even if it has to be separate, we'll get all the factions modernized so we can add to our old collections, without making customs. I mean... 5 sets, a bit pathetic in my eyes. Although, I cannot complain too much, because we have got new bluecoats... Quote
Captain Dee Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Five sets wouldn't be pathetic if another wave was coming next year. Back in the days of the classic sets, little updates each year or so kept everyone's attention and kept the theme fresh. Likewise the continuous run of three Imperial factions kept the right side of the law well represented from 1989-1996. It seems the theme just isn't important to TLG anymore - or at least not as much as it once was. When other themes get long lists of sets, with frequent refreshes, it just shows how little this current wave really means to the people designing and selling them. If anything is pathetic, that surely is. The previous wave (the new redcoats) wasn't perfect but at least it had a few more offerings, not counting the flagship of course. It just doesn't look good for serious collectors of the theme; however, I don't think custom builds will be hampered. But that's not the point. The lack of variety in the sets themselves and the pirate minifigs is the most pathetic part in my mind. Yes, there are a few unique figs in the theme - but it's difficult to make much variety out of them. I'm happy we have the theme back but more than a little disappointed by the blandness of it all. I couldn't agree more. Both the Bluecoats and the Pirates of this small wave got reused heads and torsos so often (not counting the main bluecoat torso, of course), for example, the Bluecoat in the Soldier's Fort, Treasure Island, and Shipwreck Defence all got the same faces, many of the pirates go the same torsos, only with mixed up faces, hats and legs, and the most of the pirates faces are reused several times, especially the one with the eyepatch and moustache. And I mean, there's little selection, I mean 4/5 sets connect together to make 2 bigger sets, they don't even have a battlepack! Come on, LEGO! Quote
Sigolf Brimabane Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Back in the days, all the pirates had the same head and all the soldiers had the same head :PPP Yeah, I understand it's different now. Is that little "retro" set exclusive to VIP customers? :/ I do want the new torso, but I don't want to pay an extreme amount of money for it. Quote
VintageLegoEra Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 to me, This Promo set is sooo Normal and doesn't deserve to pay alot for it.. Quote
