David Thomsen Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 (edited) I see no issues with using some newer style headgear for variety. (When did people start wearing bowlers?) someone should point out that that wide brimmed floppy hat from the CMF Scare Crow would also work well in Pirates with different printing. Wikipedia says the bowler hat was 'originally created in 1849'. A bit late for the Golden Age of Piracy (1650s to 1730s), but the Lego Pirates used to fight Lego Conquistadors (16th Century), so there has never been that much historical cohesion. It is weird to think of a pirate wearing headgear designed after the invention of the steam train, though. But I've been open to pirates wearing 19th century hats since a pirate wore a top hat in the first Monkey Island game - one of the pirates you fight on Mêlée Island. Using the new shooters does not immediately offend me. Provided we get one real cannon. I've been looking at them trying to figure out some other uses for them lately. Swivel guns or as the basis for light cannon seems a reasonable option. Plus it's a play feature. It depends on the size of the boat, to me - if this is a very small boat, as suggested, then I might accept the stud shooter as a small version of a cannon. Especially if it's put in some kind of cannon housing, like a small version of this: Actually, there's an interesting challenge - using parts already available, construct a passable housing for the Lego Stud Shooter. Go! Now that I think about it, one of the items on my 'Lego Pirate piece wish list' was a small swivel cannon, and this could potentially be just the right thing. Basically all of the complaints of the person who saw the retailer catalogue mean nothing to me. Edited August 30, 2014 by David Thomsen Quote
Roebuck Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 If the picture in the "name the pirate ship" contest is anything to go by, it will have at least two firing cannons... Quote
tafkatb Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Looking at the Green Lantern set coming from DC Super Heroes, it looks like there will be a new stud-mounted version of the stud shooter. Could be that. Quote
David Thomsen Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 If the picture in the "name the pirate ship" contest is anything to go by, it will have at least two firing cannons... I still strongly believe that this picture wasn't representative of the actual set, since it has exactly the same sails as the Brickbeard Bounty... I think it was just a few parts of a sailing ship thrown together for the sake of the competition art. But the set description we've been given doesn't discount the presence of firing cannons, it just focusses on what the person thought were the negative aspects of the set, which isn't much use at all really. The set may well have stud shooters and firing cannons. Looking at the Green Lantern set coming from DC Super Heroes, it looks like there will be a new stud-mounted version of the stud shooter. Could be that. Yes, thank you - I hadn't noticed these. They make much more sense for mounted cannons than the hand-held stud shooters. Quote
Pulp Detective Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Well about the bowler hat it might be a replacement for a new hat mold,it's a wild guess but who knows we'll wait and see. Quote
Blakstone Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 It might indeed. However I would think Pirates 2015 would take advantage of new CMF parts such as the swashbuckler / musketeer hat and the revolutionary soldier wig. Most lines seem to have such a small change budget that a new hat mold is avoided. Perhaps the person who gave the review confused the hat type. Didn't a lot of the soldiers wear hats that looked like extra tall top hats. Quote

This information is not official and is subject to change without notice, but the pricing could be: Shipwreck Defense (70409) – 17.99 NZD/$12 USD Soldiers’ Outpost (70410) – 39.99 NZD/$20 USD Treasure Island (70411) – 39.99 NZD/$20 USD Soldiers’ Fort (70412) – 59.99 NZD/$40 USD The Brick Bounty (70413) – 179.99 NZD/$90 USD Quote
greenalfonzo Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I am really looking forward to the soldiers. Funny how they haven't gone back to the Spanish/conquistadors in the pirates line for some time. Quote
VintageLegoEra Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I am really hoping to see the ship is in good standard look. Cos it seems to me very normal ans small Quote

If the pics leak, we can get it in October, but we'll most likely see 'em in November. OK, a little while before we see pics. do you know if the wave is coming out early or mid 2015? Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 (edited) Well the last Pirates wave(2009) was released at January,so I don't see why they should change that next year. Edited September 3, 2014 by LOTR343 Quote
Zeya Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I strongly suspect the bowler hat is just a placeholder part. For those of you haven't ever seen a preliminary photo leaked from a retailer catalog, there are often these details that are placeholders, and it isn't quite the final product. Sometimes it will be a strange part in red or a not-final face print. Usually the general "build"/structure is pretty much final, in my experience. But a bowler hat seems way out of place, and I think it would be a placeholder for what will probably be a part from a new mold. Maybe that figure will have a beard+hat piece that isn't ready yet, kind of like Blackbeard from the POTC sets. I hope the person from r/toys just has a different taste than I do. I really want this to be a nice wave of pirates, hopefully even yielding a second wave, but first things first. The set list does sound almost exactly like the 2009 wave. I do hope there's 1 or 2 other sets not listed there, even just a polybag or something. I also find the prices to be surprisingly low and I worry there won't be enough there to satisfy me. For the ship, I don't mind a smaller size at all, but I just hope they don't try and make the part count stretch too much! I would be very happy with something like the Renegade Runner. Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted September 3, 2014 Governor Posted September 3, 2014 The set list does sound almost exactly like the 2009 wave. One may postulate since LEGO Pirates core demographic is 7-12 year old males, the LEGO Group intends upon recycling similar set ideas every 5 years, because after 5 years that "generation" of children is no longer in the core demographic so the same ideas can be re-used on the next "generation". I very much hope I'm wrong about that! Quote

I very much hope I'm wrong about that! I very much doubt that you are. Remember that each batch of 7-12 years old that arrives every 5 years will have similar thoughts about pirate ships; eg. Pirate ships are cool (therefore our range needs a pirate ship), Pirates live on an island (therefore our range needs an island base), I want more pirates (therefore our range needs an army builder pack)... For us AFOL's that have been with it since the beginning, the repetition is frustrating, once a theme we get something a bit interesting or unique (Shipwreck hideout instead of Pirate Island) but the likelihood of them exploring other related topics such as mercantilism is relatively slim given their need to target the desires of the core audience to sell product. You can see the familiar cycle with the other ever-green themes like city or castle where the same style of sets keeps appearing again and again. Sometimes they do something a bit different, eg. Forest Police, but ultimately they can't stray from what the 7-12 year old market wants. There's been a lot of consternation on the Historic forums that the "Elves" theme wasn't the high elves that they dream of but Mini-doll Pixies for 5-7yr old girls; therefore no castle release this year. I wonder if TLG are going to alternate between Castle and Pirates every year or so. For themes that aren't backed by a cartoon (or movie) to provide the longevity they seem to be thinking in 1 year slots at the moment. Quote
tacozftw Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) I remember when the pics of the retailer catalog leaked and we saw the star wars winter 2014 sets. I specifically remember that for the kashyyyk troopers set, the 2 kashyyyk scout troopers had the torso from the mirkwood elf polybag and their helmets were the exact same as the white scout trooper from the star wars range. Lego presumably did this because they hadn't finished developing the torso print and the helmets. So relax about the bowler hats - they're most likely a placeholder for a sweet new pirate hat. As for the ship being small, like someone before me said, it's the same price as the LOTR corsair ship and I like that ship a lot! (personal complaints about it as a set, that entire wave, and LOTR as a theme in general aside) Edited September 3, 2014 by tacozftw Quote

Pirate ships are cool (therefore our range needs a pirate ship), Pirates live on an island (therefore our range needs an island base), I want more pirates (therefore our range needs an army builder pack)... It's a sensible business model but not very promising in terms of innovation and remaining on the cutting edge of pirate theme construction toys. You can see the familiar cycle with the other ever-green themes like city or castle where the same style of sets keeps appearing again and again. Sometimes they do something a bit different, eg. Unfortunately I've fallen out of the City and Castle loop in recent years, but you're a top analysis man, so I trust your judgement. Still, the Forest Fire Fighters sub-theme was conceived by a LEGO Ambassador so maybe there is hope for our Design your LEGO Pirates Sub-Theme Ambassador Project. There's been a lot of consternation on the Historic forums that the "Elves" theme wasn't the high elves that they dream of but Mini-doll Pixies for 5-7yr old girls; therefore no castle release this year. Hesedguy Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I do hope that the Pirates line does go deeper than the current list of potential sets. With just one ship it seems a little lacking. Who would the ship have a cannon battle with? On a separate, slightly lighter, note. It looks like the "Elves" theme that's coming out has a ship in it's lineup as well, which may end up nice for MoCing. Quote
