Well the major improvement with the rc is that you can add rubber bands to the wheels in order to help your train going up hills.

On the other hand as stated by Hinckley, it's not as powerfull as the old ones. I'd go for 9v as it will cost you less on the long run (no batteries). You can find endless topics on EB about the switch to the new RC system. Initialy, TLC argued that it was made for cost reduction and more affordable sets. I remember many people (including me) saying that there would never be any down in the pricing. I think I never made such an accurate prophetie in my whole life X-D

I think it was the switch-over to RC. And I agree with your assessment that those were the two best train lines ever. It's a shame that it ended so abruptly. I really would like to know if was bad financially for LEGO. Maybe kids weren't as interested in the MOT, so they introduced a RC train to lure the kids back. But then why drop the MOT. I'm sorry that Train Factory set is not a good replacement. Sure it has some great parts which I find it excellent that I can get them on PaB, but I really miss the train car kits. :'-(

I actually doubt that the switch to RC has anything to do with it. Remember that there were other 9v trains released aswell: the World City line (YUCK) and the Harry Potter train (semi-YUCK). I blame it on general disintrest from kids towards trains and the fact that Jake McKee is no longer with TLC. I truly believe that the Santa f

I tried that and it didn't work for me. I will try again.

I use rechargebles anyway... :-D

BTW I love the new Work train it really is the best complete train set since the 1994 Freight Rail Runner, and for me RC isn't that bad since I use the 12v system

Do you have the old remote point system set up? Oh how I used to drool over that in the catalogs! I kept waiting for its return... I am very happy with the cargo train, with the exception being the crane, which I plan to modify soon. Even so, I hope Lego find room for both. Given enough space I want a combined system...

Sorry I wasn't more clear. It seemed you were saying that LEGO replaced 9v with the Train Factory set. I believe they've replaced it with RC line and the factory set is a bone thrown to the 9v hangers-on. Notice it works with both lines. I seem to remember a lot of talk about we'll see about the future of 9v after the factory set is released...perhaps we should bring this to the ambassador forum for an update... :-)

*wub* Agreed! They really have moved past the crap from the last decade + with the new city and train sets. LEGO truly went through their own dark ages. :-X

I agree. The impression was given that all answers would be revealed, instead a single set is released.... :-(

I posted a new thread about it in the Ambassadors forum...

Me too, It actually was a picture of the BNSF that dragged me out of my dark age.

I'll go as far as saying that the MoT and the two santa f

Jup, I got four remote swithes, one stop light and one railroad crossing (this is amazing).

I really shed a tear back in 1991 when they changed to 9v,luckly my mother bought up a lot of stock so I sill have a decent colletion of 12v track

Do you have any other pictues aside from your Flickr account?

Tsk, tsk, shameless self-promotion, Holodoc? ;-) :-P

Ooops - I forgot to mention, that these MOCs are NOT my own creation!! :-$

Sometimes I find something interesting crowling the net and save it to my own computer. When I saw LTRs question I uploaded it to my Brickshelf account.

Whoever made this creation - the applause goes to him/her! Sorry, I forgot the source. :-|

*sad*

EDIT: Looking for the pics source I tried "train switch" at Brickshelf. Nice findings there! :-)

Do you guys think I will need some sort of rcx to deploy the light and crossings?

If so that could be expensive, imagine that...legos,expensive,who would of thought? :-|

Thanks agian for you help guys! *y*

My two suggestions work without any RCX! All you need is some technic stuff.

But talking of an automated switch I thought you have at least a motor and a battery pack to let the motor spin. ;-)

Or did you have something completely different in mind?

Oh, I see: switch <=> crossing 8-| (my fault)

But how are you going to do that without an RCX? We are talking about a 9V system, not 12V aren

I really don't know,rcx just seams confusing so I thought I could aviod it...hopefully X-D

Well,I was going to ask about switches too so thanks ;-)

IMHO RCX is really simple, (I learned using it in half an hour, and got the highest score in three days) but that might be just the ROBOLAB version, though. And now that the NXT is out, I think the RCX will be really cheap around eBay and such! I recommend getting it, you will have loads of fun! ;-)

And Holodoc; X-D

|-/ anyway... has anyone here built or know how to build an automated railroad crossing?

so glad you asked that question and got the cool responses as I've just started work on my trains and wanted to automate the crossing. My 2yo son keeps getting frustrated cuz he can't quite get the switch lever to work so wanted to do something where he just has to press a button or something

Well what would you guys recomend, older rcx or new nxt? What kind of sensor would be the best for sticking between the tracks and registering when there is a train ?

You guys are great at finding pictures and info, thanks! *y*

If you just need it for the level crossing - I'd go for the RCX. It works well for this purpose, and I guess it will be real cheap soon. *sweet*

Regarding the sensors: I would go for the light sensor. that would be the easiest. If you don't want any parts showing you could try to stick a push sensor under the track in some way.

I have not tried the new NXT but I don't think I like it.. I hate it when they always say "it's super easy!! Your first robot will be ready to fight within half an hour!!" ..I hate those easy, simplified drag-and-drop programs; I want a challenge! I don't want the freaking computer to give me advice or actually tell me what to do in detail! Also, I don't want my robots to fight. :-|

Hmm, now I think I'm getting a little off-topic.. :-$

ROBOLAB on!

Once again time to revive a thread:

I got my 10183 last week, and after being very dissapointed with getting the actual plans, I must say that the models I built are all great.

10183.jpg

It is almost impossible to built two or three models with the included bricks, mainly small type of bricks should have been doubled in numbers. Like lightsaber rods and 1X1 plates with hinges. I have built these three models with 40 or so extra parts from my own collection. But I really love the way it looks. It is the ultimate creator set and I think it should have been promoted that way.

Lego really missed the ball with the LDD2.0 plans, I think they are missing a whole lot of sales because of this.

This is exactly the reason I have not bought it so far. |-/ >:-(
