Blondie-Wan Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I thought CUUSOO had come to their senses and would stop focus on licensed ideas. Looks like it's back to the usual stuff now while the really good and original ideas have to stand back. I don't believe much in CUUSOO as it works now. Licenses currently account for under half of all CUUSOO projects to have passed review so far (three out of seven). That's substantial, to be sure, but I don't know how it consitutes a "focus" on them. Honestly, the last licensed CUUSOO set before this one was three sets earlier (the Back to the Future Delorean time machine, followed by the MSL Curiosity rover and the upcoming exo-suit mech). If anything, there's more of a "focus" on vehicles designed for scientific research and exploration, since the Shinkai 6500 submersible, the Hayabusa probe and the Curiosity rover all clearly fit this, as does the Delorean time machine (it's fictional, sure, and it's not the primary purpose to which it winds up being put in the movies, but that's still its in-universe raison d'être), and perhaps even the exo-suit as well, thus accounting for arguably as many as five of the seven confirmed sets in total. Clearly, the take-away lesson from most CUUSOO decisions (though not this one) is that if you want a set to pass, make it a vehicle designed for answering questions about the universe. Quote
Ridge Montante Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Holy Freaking Excited!!! I can't wait for this set to come out. Now all three of my favorite movies are done in LEGO. BTTF, Indiana Jones and now Ghostbusters. This is so amazing. Quote
Colossus Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) I was really hoping for LEGO to include the Ghostbusters HQ. Perhaps including a Mr. Walter Peck from The EPA Minifig so I could reenact my favourite Peter Venkman scene from the movie. "Yes, it's true. This man has no BRick." paul_delahaye Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) Why does Sara keep wiggling her body in the video, she appears very excited about this news Edited January 30, 2014 by paul_delahaye Quote
Colossus Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Why does Sara keep wiggling her body in the video, she appears very excited about this news When my daughter wiggles like that, it usually means she has to use the bathroom. Yikes. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I will have to watch the video later. But I am not surprised this passed. I am disappointed in no Oz set then. My daughter would have loved that. I assume too many new molds? Getting all four Ghostbusters will be neat though. I never suspected the building to be included, so I'm not sure why so many people thought that. The Ecto-1 is all that is really needed. The building is neat, but nothing extraordinary in terms of modular style. Definite buy! Quote
CorneliusMurdock Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Let's focus on the actual news of the set here. Please refrain from commenting on the presenter. Quote
meyerc13 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The real question is this - will it have lights and sounds? Crossing my fingers that it does. Quote
CorneliusMurdock Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The real question is this - will it have lights and sounds? Crossing my fingers that it does. I don't think TLG currently has a light brick in production that could work like it would need to. A sound brick would probably be possible but it would also make the price higher than it would otherwise. If it would be cheaper, I'm happy to provide my own sound effects. Weeee-ooooo, weeeeee-oooooo! Quote
punkkid364 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I'm stoked. I've been pulling for this one since I first saw it on CUUSOO. Doubly excited since Ghostbusters is my all-time favorite movie. Quote
Etzel Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Why should everything be nonlicenced? There was something nonlicenced last time, so I expect they just want to do something licensed this time. Because the licensed ideas are just copies in my opinion. I think CUUSOO should encourage the original ideas and work from LEGO fans instead of just free riding on popular licenses. Licenses currently account for under half of all CUUSOO projects to have passed review so far (three out of seven). That's substantial, to be sure, but I don't know how it consitutes a "focus" on them. Clearly, the take-away lesson from most CUUSOO decisions (though not this one) is that if you want a set to pass, make it a vehicle designed for answering questions about the universe. 3/7 are 3 too many in my opinion. And yes, the Shinkai, Hayabusa, and Curiosity are all examples of scientific vehicles which again shows the lack of diversity and original ideas among the CUUSOO sets. 3 licensed sets, 3 scientific vehicles and 1 exo-suit mech. Well, I just don't see how that line up helps spreading the idea of creativity and originality that I thought was the goal of CUUSOO. I'm sure the Ghostbuster set will please many fans of that license and I hope it will look good, but to me it's sort of a wasted opportunity for something better suited for the CUUSOO idea. Quote
Crimereporter Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 This is awesome. Huge Ghostbusters fan. Definite buy. Quote

Looks like it's back to the usual stuff now while the really good and original ideas have to stand back. I don't believe much in CUUSOO as it works now. What exactly are you talking about? Of the 7 approved for production CuuSoo sets 3 were real world/ real space / science subjects, 2 were from classic movies, 1 was from a popular video game and 1 is based on a classic Lego theme? Where exactly is this "licensed focus"? The projects currently looming in the top 10-12 votes seem to reflect a similar spread of real world, pop culture and licenses? Even in review waves where there are a lot of "licenses" it seems the nature of them and specific subjects are quite broad. Ranging from truly classic things like the Wizard of Oz, to newer interpretations of classic literature like Sherlock, to modern video games like FTL or television like Adventure Time. All licensing means is the set is based on something, and typically something familiar and liked by a large enough block of people. The birds project is based on something. The polish bus is based on something. The Japanese buildings are based on something. So where exactly is this oft repeated focus? Quote
Cammo Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Does this mean that Back to the Future will retire soon? BTW, do you guys think that they will create a new hairpiece for Bill Murray or will they use the Bruce Wayne headpiece? Quote
meyerc13 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I don't think TLG currently has a light brick in production that could work like it would need to. A sound brick would probably be possible but it would also make the price higher than it would otherwise. If it would be cheaper, I'm happy to provide my own sound effects. Weeee-ooooo, weeeeee-oooooo! I'd pay extra for the lights and sounds. I know they don't have a light brick, but maybe this will be the project that will push them to release something. There are some great third party solutions out there (LifeLites comes to mind), that LEGO should license if they don't want to do it themselves. Quote
Kez Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Yes!! This is great news, congrats to Brent and I certainly look forward to purchasing this set , although commiserations to the other ghost busters project Quote

I just think suggesting sets based on films/tv-series/videogames etc as many of the current ideas on CUUSOO are is the wrong way to go for a project that could be about creativity and originality. Of course a lot of the other ideas are based on something as well, but just copying the idea straight of a famous license is just not worth this much attention IMO. Quote

I think that it comes down to whether or not you could build a theme out of it. Once you do the DeLorean, where do you go with BTTF sets? Nowhere. CUUSOO is a PERFECT outlet for single set licenses like BTTF or Ghostbusters. I'd be a lot more upset with a set from say Star Wars or Batman getting approved than a set from a license we might not see otherwise. I disagree with the idea that licensed sets make them less creative. Finding the right bricks to match shapes or colors, or how something looks in a movie is definitely a skill, and I applaud that skill when I see it. Quote

Thanks to cuusoo we are getting iconic vehicles in lego form from legendary family movies that I think lego never decided to put into production before because they are afraid of bad sales because there arent any running support movie or kid show.Yes they can pick female set first rather than ecto 1 to archieve something original, but will it be instant buy for most buyers of all ages and generate money as something like movie classic that seems to be still popular? This isnt charity this is business! Edited January 30, 2014 by Ondra Quote
CM4Sci Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Hmm. I was sure Poptropica would win. But Ghostbusters is cool, too. I wonder if we'll get Slimer? -Sci Quote
KingPixels Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 3/7 are 3 too many in my opinion. Well frankly I'm glad you aren't in charge. Without this project we would never have had another chance at official Ghosbusters minifigures. I'm very glad we are. Quote
TotalAfol Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 YAY! Love this! Def. looks a better build than the delorian. I suspect I'll be adding one of these to my wishlist! Well done Lego Cuusoo, this is an awesome facility that more companies should adopt. Listen to your customers, build what they want. Simples. Quote

Weeee-ooooo, weeeeee-oooooo! Lego produced light and sound sets in the past using a 9 volt battery box, and a simple sound brick. My brother had this set when we were little, and it wasn't that expensive. I know that if it doesn't have light and sound, I'm modifying it using this set! Does this mean that Back to the Future will retire soon? I doubt it, the two sets kind of support each other seeing as they're both iconic 80's movie vehicles. Quote
badbob001 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I wonder if ecto1 fits into the Fire Brigade building... Quote
