I really don't see the need for free-build points anymore. It really detracts from my building incentive to just have a bunch of builds that are just built to get points. I thought the whole point of the Sultans Gate project is to start visualizing places in Kaliphlin and if we have fifteen totally different looks for the same gate it just doesn't set right in my mind. So I am totally for canonization of locations.

I see what you are saying Masa. I think the gate was the challenge portion -- in order to get more entries to win the prize. But like you said, this will turn out kind of like challenge 6 where there were 20 good endings, and only one counted. I don't think this is as extreme, but still kind of the same.

Other gates that might be in the city: gate to the center of the city, or keep; gates to the east or west, there are sure to be tribes that live in those directions, maybe not major gates, but gates none-the-less.

As for free builds, there is the general competition between the guilds that it provides. The winner at the end does have consequences -- although these are still unknown to the general public.

I think that it would be nice to see some different interpretations of this gate on top of the escarpment, but I also agree with the view that we maybe should not "waste" builds not expanding the canon and fleshing out Kaliphlin.

When it comes to freebuilds generally it would be interesting to know if a generally high level from a few participants would count as much as a multitude of builds of varying level from a guild with dozens of active members (*ahem* AoM).

Regardless of what the scoring at the end will end up in, I will still generally go for fewer builds with more work put into each build.

Wow, everyone is really jealous of our united community of builders

I'm really neither here nor there on the issue... it doesn't matter too much to me if I'm building something that doesn't end up being canon or not.

I doubt it would. For the last book I know Z said free-builds earned very little points - say 10 a build (of course I don't know and it could be different now), still that means 10 so-so builds would probably add up to at least 20 points - perhaps even 30-45 - whereas two really good ones probably would only make it to, say, 16.

I'm pretty sure that the leaders will figure out a way to balance quantity vs. quality. To be honest that is exactly the reason I haven't been pumping out builds like I did for a bit in Book I.

I'm putting a bit more work into each build

I ordered and paid for a Bricklink order on February 8th which still has not been shipped yet. This order had all the pieces I needed to finish my Sultan's Gate build. Unfortunately, seeing the date and knowing that the order still has not shipped, I highly doubt I will make the deadline.

I have not finished my main gate build yet to the extent I had planned. Due to time constraints I will probably have to only post the gatehouse itself for the deadline, and finish the top part of the cliff it is on (which I've started also) as a separate free-build later. At least I've made a small portion of the city wall and the buildings behind it to hint at the city behind the gate. Hopefully the final result of these parts put together will be

At least the bricklink order from Poland I was waiting for arrived in time, so now some lbg placeholder lion heads above the gate have been changed to proper medium dark flesh ones to match the ones at the flanking towers.

Only the first tail: submitting a city gate so it can be "canon", for that the deadline is the 31st of this month. You have until the end of July for any builds related to Sultan's Gate tho, to enter the city competition (not the gate).

A good idea and challenge. Unfortunately, I doubt I will be able to finish my other mocs and compile one for Sultan's Gate in time to meet the deadline :look:.

Oh for some reason I thought it was end of May for the gate. I will do another one anyway but I would like to request a special deadline extension for Mike. 6 weeks to ship?! That sucks.

Great entry Gideon, totally beautiful ( and thank you for the shape and the feather )

The GNAR contest is up the end of May I believe. Thanks for the consideration. I still have not received the order and they said they would ship it last Monday. However the status wasn't changed until Wednesday. The bad thing is that this is my fifth order with this seller and I never had any problem before. Anyway I don't think that there is any need to give me a special deadline extension as the deadline was already extended before. I'm not really too good at competition builds anyway. And your and Gideon's gates are perfect for the gate, yours for the inside of the gate and Gideon's for the outside. I'll just say my gate is one of Sultan's Gate southern gates.
