Posted February 17, 201411 yr Has somebody been able to build a mechanically correct crawler ? I mean one with differential drives and motors in the suspended mass... I've seen many crawlers in the net, but with rigid axles, drive motors in strange places.. I've been trying for a while but until now my solutions are all too big and heavy, so everything works right, but it could'nt crawl..!
February 17, 201411 yr There is no "correct" way. Whatever works is the way here. When thinking of crawlers i always think of the crazy iceland offroad racing trucks:
February 17, 201411 yr Crawlers aren't really mass produced (I think), so every one is different. I wouldn't focus on where the engine is and other technicalities, just do what you need to for a great performing rock crawler.
February 17, 201411 yr Author ok ok ! let's just say that I'm trying to make a crawler with suspended engine and differential locks, but at the moment it weights so much that it dosn't crawl ! I was asking for help ! @Technyk32231 I didn't know !
February 17, 201411 yr Most crawlers use a 4 link set up, I'd look at rc crawlers to see where they mount batteries and motors.
February 17, 201411 yr I understand why he wants this- a mechanically correct crawler would be beautiful! 4-link suspension, pneumatic steering (of course as a substitute for nonexistent LEGO hydraulics), no motors on axles, etc. TLH
February 17, 201411 yr Have you allready looked here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=z32drive ? There some awesome crawlers with great performance out there (especially ''Best crawler yet'' has some awfully good performance) Maybe you can find something and make your own changes?
February 18, 201411 yr Author there are many nice solutions, but for me is inconceivable to make a vehicle without diffs..! if you drive curve for 2 seconds on a noslipping surface (and motors are powerful) you'll see axels wrench ! however.. i'll abandon the crawler idea and i'll make an off roader !!
February 18, 201411 yr Author i've found a very nice model in the forum... remote drive engine, remote steering engine.. http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=66146 Edited February 18, 201411 yr by astakos
March 14, 201410 yr I make good lego crawlers my best own crawler was super light - 650g with body, it driver VERY WELL but it was slow.
