TheBrickPal Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) Classic Space will forever be a huge part of LEGO's history. Not only was it the first big innovation in terms of new pieces and building techniques, but it also was one of LEGO's most successful lines of sets. A lot of AFOLs will recall owning the many minifigures and sets from the 1980's theme (and some still do). It definitely left a legacy. Now, current LEGO fans and older fans alike are getting a taste of Classic Space with The LEGO Movie, the most recent blockbuster hit. Not only does Benny appear, giving many adult fans some nostalgia (and showing the infamous cracked helmet), but scenes do show a few other Classic Space nods, such as Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP, which utilizes some of the designs seen in old Classic Space sets. The set of the ship itself will arrive in stores this summer. The upcoming CUUSOO Exo Suit even has some Classic Space inspiration. Does this hint a possible Classic Space reboot? Maybe not, but we can dream. As LEGO releases a new space theme every year or so, this would seem ideal. We've already see a lot of humans vs aliens (from Mars Mission to Galaxy Squad), so you could say that it is time for a change. We've been shown that LEGO is not afraid to bring back themes from years back in a brand new way, for example Space Police III (2009). Who says Classic Space couldn't return? Astronaut minifigs could lead a peaceful life on the moon once again, without any alien buggoids or Martians to harm them. Of course, it would have to be more modern to please this generation, but that would be part of the fun! Benny could even make a cameo in one set if he wanted to. We could have more lunar bases, a brand new monorail transport system, and some small and large ships based on designs from the 80's! I want your opinion. What would you like to see if LEGO ever decided to revive Classic Space? Do you think it would ever happen? Edited February 28, 2014 by Puffle Pal26 Quote
xenologer Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) The recent movie Gravity shows space can be action packed without evil space aliens and laser guns, why not? I'd like to see more science experiment-ish stuff, dogs in space, zero-g botany lab, etc, plausible 'missions' for sets also, astroid miner it'll have mechanical arms with claws and saws and 'geopenetrator probes'(shooter gimmicks) sure to please kids and afols alike Edited February 28, 2014 by xenologer Quote
Moebius118 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 This year's Arctic theme reboot would have been so much better if it was Ice Planet instead. I miss those orange visors. Quote
B-Lister Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) Ice Planet, and Blacktron returning would be sweet. M-Tron returning would be epic. I always imagined the Vector Detector was designed to create a gravity well to prevent hostile ships from going to warp. Edited February 28, 2014 by Mister Blisterfists Quote
wesker Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I'd love to see Classic Space make a comeback or any of the other older Space subthemes (Ice Planet, Blacktron, Spyrius etc) If one of them was to return it would be nice if they kept the original colour schemes and update the classic minifigure designs (like Star Wars constantly does) rather than have everything be completely new and unrecognizable like Space Police 3 was. Ulrik Hansen Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Hurry and get the Classic Space sets you long for before the prices skyrocket :) I would love to see the CS reintroduced and parts like the special wedge plates that can extend eachother. Quote
Cwetqo Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Great idea. I will promote this in Billund, but I'm afraid that todays "conflict" based concept is requirement from marketing department. It seem that kids today want to buy sets where one side can battle anoother. Quote
steele Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) I'd be happy with most any new sets using classic parts/colors: Blue/grey/trans-yellow White/black/trans-blue (monorail!) Blacktron I Ice Planet Simply calling it "Retro-Space" would be plenty good enough for me. Something like how Disney's "Tomorrowland" is now---it's perma-retro and revels in it, as it proved difficult to keep changing things to maintain a "realistic" future over the years. I'm surely not the only one looking at current and future sets with an eye on acquiring parts to upgrade Benny's ship---but there's almost nothing out there. It's like LEGO didn't even produce any blue elements this year. Conflict? No problem. Blacktron is the original and best "badguy" team in space. Black+yellow+trans-red! DPrime Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I'm all for it. Only Lego I really collect, actually... If there has to be conflict, so be it. Combine it with Blacktron and Space Police (many of us do anyway, I'm sure), or as I stated in another thread, our intrepid Classic Space explorers could discover a long abandoned nest of Alien Conquest guys in stasis or something. :) Quote
The Kumquat Alchemist Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) I can only hope for such a thing. Classic Space was a wonderfully creative line with its inventive uses of the blocky bricks of its day in highly detailed and uniquely shaped spacecraft. I'd love to see the LEGO designers imitate that triangular, blocky aesthetic using modern parts instead of striving for more streamlined craft, like in their Ep 1-3 Star Wars ship designs. I'd certainly love some sets with the Classic Space logo that don't cost 100 USD, like Benny's Spaceship. Edited February 28, 2014 by The Kumquat Alchemist Quote
Orange Leader Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Yeah, I'm for a triangle conflict for a space theme: Civilian/Explorers - Police Force - Criminals. I think It's the most realistic way to please old school LEGO Space fans and LEGO fans from today who enjoy black and white conflict, also think of the diversion of just only two space factions. I think Space Police 3 was great, but not perfect: It lacked civilians to protect in It's product line outside of Classic Space statues and astroid ATM's. I doubt however we will get very specific revival themes like 'Ice Planet 2002' or other themes from the past. I'm already satisfied with an easteregg. Quote
BrickSponge2015 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I agree. I just want more classic space minifigures (okay, maybe with updated heads) and more modern versions of early 80s stuff. Quote
AlmightyArjen Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I hope TLG sees something in a reboot of the classic space themes mentioned above but I believe that the kids of these days need more "action" (conflict) in the themes and Classic Space is a bit too soft for that. Don't get me wrong: I love Classic Space and I don't like the current space sets at all but the kids of today are competely different from the kids 25 years ago. Unfortunately... Quote

Then add space polar bears for Ice Planet remake. Quote

AlmightyArjen Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Why would prices skyrocket? If Classic Space is introduced again with the same colour scheme, a lot of persons would like to have the old original sets too. Demand gets higher so prices will go up to... Quote
BasOne Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) Why would prices skyrocket? Because most spaceships have very large boosters I'd like to see a space theme like they did with the City theme. Ambulance, police, fire, criminals, buildings, civilian, other services, but... in space.... You could build an entire moonbase with civilian buildings, lauchpads, civilian hot rod speeders (and police speeders to chase them), mining vehicles (for Helium 3 ), postal spacevans etc etc etc the sky is the limit Other then that, heck yeah, i'd like to see a return of Classic Space Redux Edited February 28, 2014 by BasOne Quote
chbenito Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Honestly, I would just love to be able to buy packs of the classic space minifigs. I wouldn't need sets if I could just buy the dudes in those five classic colors. Quote
Laura Beinbrech Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 So you need conflict? Blacktron 3! Blam, problem solved! I second this.... Neo-Classic Space vs Blacktron 3 would be simply awesome! Quote
Ardelon Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Classic Space was before my time, so I dont have this kind of attachment to it. I'd like to see reboots of many older themes (Ice Planet tops my list), but - and this is my biggest psychological hurdle - unless the insignia is the same, I couldn't consider them the same faction, which worries me a bit. But then, the Blacktron shout outs in the last few years have an accurate Blactron II logo, so I have some hope. The thing about space polar bears is that this line of thinking would just devolve into another "humans fighting alien monsters" theme, which I'm rather tired of, just like many others here. Though my main hope is to see civilians in space - explorers, scientists, miners, etc. - so if this is fulfilled I wouldn't really mind some antagonists or conflict. I could actually go for something like "Power Miners ... in Space"! Quote

It could centre around CS too... Like what would happen when moon bases expand into cities and colonists start populating them. CS logo everywhere! :) Honestly, I would just love to be able to buy packs of the classic space minifigs. I wouldn't need sets if I could just buy the dudes in those five classic colors. I would like to see new colours mixed in too, especially green, orange and dark blue! Quote
ghostmind Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Kind of a misleading subject line there, don't you think? Edited March 1, 2014 by ghostmind Quote
LegoFjotten Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I'd love to see a Classic Space reboot, but I'm afraid it will never happen. Benny's spaceship is probably as close as we will get... Actually I would be perfectly happy if it was possible to buy some of the classic space bricks new at reasonable prices: - trans-yellow windscreens - LBG wing plates - a few printed slopes with the space logo I wish Lego would release a "Classics" line, where they do a single major set and minifigure pack from the various themes of the past. A nice start could be for example: Galaxy Explorer / minifig pack similar to 6702, but with figures in all 5 colors Classic Yellow Castle / minifig pack similar to 6102 …and so on... Quote
