Just judging by Mar Stafford's comments on reddit, things aren't looking well for a reboot in the near future:

Yeah design is normally well ahead of marketing. I'm well into 2016 sets at this point. Ideas/Cuusoo is odd because it can be as little as 6 weeks from finishing the set to getting it out. I only finished the Exo-Suit about three months ago! So fast!

I would love to design for a classic space inspired line, but we also have so many ideas for brand new cool stuff it's hard to be quite so nostalgia driven.

I know Lego has been collecting a tremendous number of concepts from the community regarding "space" concepts, but it would be really difficult for the themes of "Good vs. Bad" to fit into the old realm of space exploration prior to Blacktron. I would love to see a reboot, but I am a realist and understand that is not going to happen. But I also realize their is more to space than blue, gray, and trans yellow and have been building models using many other color schemes. Galaxy Squad provided a nice new array of space color palettes if you ignore those bug sets although, lime and burgundy is a very nice color combination for some project of mine in the future.

I think it would behoove lego to simply have a classics line. Rerelease old classic sets. That is something that I could get into.

They did. It was called the Legends line. It ran from 2001-2004. While everyone says they want it. The truth is it sold rather horribly. So it is not likely to be revisited anytime soon. (Sadly for some reason they did not revisit CS when they made it. But some highlights included remakes of the Black Seas Barracuda, Black Falcons Fortress and the Metro liner.

Say what you will about the Legends line, but it was there for me when I came out of my dark age, and is why I was able to affordably purchase a NISB Metroliner. Maybe the key is to re-release small impulse sets that everyone can buy, like a little 918 Space Transport.

The Legends line was kind of neat. But it is the perfect example of the catch 22 situation Lego finds itself in with us. And why their keen business sense often reminds them to never listen to AFOLs and crazy people.

- we say we want the classic old stuff from our nostalgic youth. When they release it we bitch at how clunky the old designs are compared to modern techniques and we don't buy it.

- we say we want new versions and new takes on old stuff and old themes. When they make it we bitch because they just keep remaking the same thing. We already have this and our old one is much better. Why would we need 2 of these? Oh and the new colors suck! We don't buy it.

- we say we want something new and original with action and adventure and complex builds and cool features and parts and robots and bugs and missiles and SWOOSH! When they deliver it we complain that the stuff from our nostalgic youth is much better and we don't buy it. (Or we buy it while bitching about it)

Honestly I am often surprised that the alcoholism rates in Denmark aren't higher. Just based on AFOLs alone.

Exactly. As much as nostalgia drives my interests when looking at LEGO. I typically prefer the newer techniques and pieces to build things with. I never got into Classic Space, but I liked M:Tron and Blacktron II. But even rehashing them, they would look dated compared to Galaxy Squad or whatever else they have planned.

But I do like that TLG keeps producing trans neon green pieces for me to build my own stuff in the old themes.

Don't get me wrong. I think Benny's ssS is oneof the best sets Lego has ever made. Absolutely years best. In part because it somehow leverages a strange confluence of our nostalgic youth, new modern builds and design, plus core pop culture media tie in. I would love for them to occasionally do something similar. Say maybe a nice big new Blacktron Renegade or Marauder to go against it? But they have to be careful when revisiting the past too much. I think SP III worked mostly because it went in an entirely new direction. As did the ssS. Something new with just a touch of the familiar.

You know, to be quite honest I wouldn't even care if the colour schemes were different. For some reason, people seem to forget that for the majority of its existence, Classic Space was by no means relegated to simply blue and light grey with trans-yellow cockpits and windows.

I'd be happy if they simply brought back the Classic Space logo, to be quite honest. If Galaxy Squad - or, especially, Space Police III - had included that small detail, I would have bought all sets, rather than none.

Funny thing, I know, because I could simply add those pieces if I really wanted to, given the nature of Lego. :classic: But there's something about it being "official"...

Lets not forget that they have gone back to Blue Grey and Yellow in recent years. Except for the canopies Alien Conquest was one of the best themes for CS lovers in years. The EDF HQ was the best parts pack ever (besides being one of the truly great sets). And right before that SP III actually went back to the OTHER Classic Space color theme. White with blue canopies.

There is also the colour scheme kinda reused in SP2.

I think people are being way too pessimistic about the likelihood of a classic space reboot. We all know there will be another space theme. Now just slot in the Classic Space colors, use the Classic Space logo, and make Blacktron the enemy. Incredibly feasible.

…with aliens. Rench needs some fellow non-human Blacktron buddies!

Yeah, it really seems like something Lego could do at a moment's notice, no matter how far the designers were in the process.

TLG don't seem to like humans V humans these days though, so the bad guys would probably be aliens again.

they don't mind it castle or star wars so why not

I'm hoping for a mix, humans AND aliens in the 'enemy' faction. I loved the variety of the criminals in SPIII, if not the execution of many (I much prefer the CMF Space Alien to SPIII Squidman, for instance, as far as prints go). If it's Blacktron, the outfits would unify them; if it's space-pirates of another sort, maybe they have their own shared style or maybe the point is they don't share one, but are still clearly tied together by not wearing Classic Space suits :classic:

Which I find odd; it kind of sends a wrong message, I would think...

They need to differentiate their space themes from Star Wars, remember

Wrong message? By not encouraging children to fight against other people? I think they would argue that sowing seeds of conflict against made-up aliens is the lesser of 2 evils, if we assume that there really must be conflict to sell the sets.

Not quite true. LEGO has started using skeletons, orcs, goblins, and so forth as Castle villains more and more. They still use humans but they are using them rather less and less. And Star Wars is a special case. The story is already written, and Lego has to use the characters handed to them.

I don't know that you can say Castle's using humans less & less… the skeletons & trolls (tho I think of the green lil dudes as orcs as many others do) were in one theme over a couple years, then it switched back to human antagonists (Green Dragons) in Kingdoms, and again humans (Dragons) in the current Castle theme.

But if you know something about future Castle sets, please spill! With LOTR/Hobbit (sadly) winding down, I'd love a return to Fantasy to expand the troll & dwarf factions, give the CMF Elf Warrior a proper faction of his own (or at least an Elven one he can blend into), maybe add in some more factions like short-legged goblins,

more evil dwarves, etc.

…but back to CS, aliens would be great to see! Maybe some are good, the equivalent of the Toy Story greenies, and rely on the Classic Space forces to protect them from a more aggressive faction?
