unimog123 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Hey everyone, I've been working on this trial truck for 2 and 1/2 weeks now, and I am nearing completion. At first I wasn't going to make a WIP topic, but I need some advice for the cab design. So this is what I've been modeling mine after. My problem is the V8 engine, because the engine is too far back I had to make the cab longer as well. This totally throws off the proportions and makes the wheels look to small and the chassis too short. I also thought I would be able to make the cab in the new green and I have enough of the panels, but not enough liftarms. So I am open to color scheme suggestions. Just to let you know though, I could probably do it in Black, Red, Yellow, and possibly White with Blue. Here's what I have so far: As you can see I also have to accommodate for a tilting cab. It has full live axle suspension and an XL motor for drive and a Servo motor for steering. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 (edited) It looks really good so far, perhaps you can find this of some use for the front of the cab.... (It is upside down) Edited March 2, 2014 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
Marcel1980 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Love to a picture of the bottom. Is that possible? Quote
Junpei Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Looks great so far, the suspension looks very nice! I don't like the looks of that battery box on one side tho. :/ TLH Quote
Doc_Brown Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I must say too, that's a good looking chassis! Looking forward to seeing the cab, keep up the good work. Quote
Lipko Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I envy the crap out of people who can build this tidy. This is the real talent and art of building, not the stuffing features in a model. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Hi unimog123, very nice chassis. The cab shouldn't be a problem. Just play around with panels. So did I with the U20 and U406 and I think those aren't that bad... Can't wait to see more pictures... Pat Quote
unimog123 Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 (edited) Love your chassis. Do you use prtal hubs? Thanks everyone, your kind comments are very much appreciated! Believe it or not it does not have portal hubs. At first I was going to give it portal hubs, but to keep the tires in proportion to where the chassis was I did not. It became a real challenge to get all the gearing I needed without the portal hubs. Love to a picture of the bottom. Is that possible? Yes, I'll post a picture of the bottom soon. Probably once I'm done, though. Looks great so far, the suspension looks very nice! I don't like the looks of that battery box on one side tho. :/ TLH Yeah, at first you would think a battery box on one side and almost nothing on the other is bad for the weight distribution, but I have not experienced any problem with it. Also I know it sticks up a bit, but it is the lowest it could be placed. The only other solution would require building that little box 2 studs wider and put the battery box on it's side, and this looks 10x uglier. Edited March 2, 2014 by unimog123 Quote
Zerobricks Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Looks very good :) Just one remark, can you reduce the angle of the links? This way there will be less side travel for the axles. Quote

Thanks, but I am unsure of what you by side travel. If you mean the axles swaying from side to side, I added a Panhard rod on the front axle and I have a 4-link setup in the rear to prevent swaying. If you mean something else, please post a picture because I do not know what you are talking about. Also if I reduced the angle, I would lose ground clearance. And as I said already I do not have portal hubs for more ground clearance. Quote
Zerobricks Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I mean the forward-backwards side travel. The more parallel links are the less forward-backwards axle sliding is there. Quote
timslegos Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Like others have said, the chassis looks great. It really gives the feel of a nice truck. tim Quote

Oh, I understand what you mean now. I don't really think the links need to be more parallel, so far I have not had any problems with the suspension. Also thanks timslegos! Quote
unimog123 Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 So more progress: At the moment I am working on the cab, and I hope I am able to keep the cab color green despite its rarity. I may have to order some green liftarms and panels to acquire the correct look, which in turn will extend the length of this project. Even though I really like this project, I am itching to start a new one. Sorry for the dark pictures, I did not realize I was leaning over the truck. There will be better pictures when completed. Pat-Ard Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Hi, that looks really good. Just buy a 42008. This set has a lot of green parts. Nearly enough for my U406. Can't wait to see new pictures! Pat Quote

Pat Thanks, I already have 42008. That's what I'm using at the moment, but it does not have certain sizes of liftarms. I will try to get as far as possible before having to order anything, but most likely I will have to. Also what do you guys think about shortening the cab by 1 stud while having the 16t gear stick out. I'm thinking I could cover that up with some black axle connectors and axles so it does not stand out much. Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Ah Ok... Then add some white stripes ... One stub more or less won't be significant... The cab of my U406 is one stud too long... In my opinion it fits... Pat Quote

In my opinion it fits... Pat I don't know about white stripes, I think the green and white would clash. If I get the chance I will see how it looks, but I using all green to kind of represent the military version of this truck rather than the regular or Dakar Rally version. I know 1 stud sounds insignificant, but by shortening it 1 stud I can get slightly closer to the correct proportions of the cab. As you can see in the example picture the cab is very short, in fact it ends slightly behind the middle of the front tires. That's what I'm basing the size off of anyway. So even the slightest decrease in length I think would look better. Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I think it would look fine if you shortened it by one or ever two studs. But I wouldn't let any of the v8 stick out the back Quote
Pat-Ard Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 OK, I see your point, but this green isn't really military And a little contrast doesn't hurt... Hmmm, then, just try it and match it with your "quality"... Quote
