Question for kabel, how do you get the gunwales tilted?

I am guessing, but could definitely be wrong, that you can achieve that by not-quite pushing down all the plates at the bottom. It looks like there might be a little bit of space between each one, which multiplied over 2-3 plates could give you that nice tumblehome that makes a fighting ship look so good.

I'm actually referring to the legendary tutorial by Capt. Green Hair and modify it for two midsections. Here's a wip shot of the technique (I'm also using different hinges):

Here's a quick update of my progress so far. The pictures aren't great and my background was falling over, but I was in a hurry anyways. I've still got quite a bit to add to it, and I'm just not that happy with the prow, so any advice on that would be most welcome.

Thank's guys! I'm trying to decide whether to go with one mast, or add another, or maybe two more. I just have the problem of sails, since I don't have any big enough for my ship...

Sigolf, thanks for the correction. I'll fix my flag in the final version. :classic:

This is starting to look like a really nice carrack, so you should go for three masts total! As for sails, take any old white t-shirt, dye it in coffee or black tea, and voila, there you have your sails. At least that's what I'm always doing.

This has come quite a ways since the first pictures you posted! It looks great so far and its exciting to see some string coming down from that masthead. I sure love some custom rigging. My knowledge of ships from this era is minimal but I do wonder where you will put the steering mechanism, which I imagine would be a simple tiller.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I made some progress on the prow, and I added two more masts, as you suggested Kabel. It looks much better with three!

Mr. Townsend, for the steering mechanism, I probably will use a capstan-esque type steering mechanism, sort of a pre-steering wheel that I've seen on a couple of middle age ship pictures. I have a "prototype" of one on the first page of this thread, but I'm still working on the final design. As for rigging... I'm gonna try to keep it fairly simple, since I usually always end up with a tangle of string.

Sounds familiar

Looking great so far, as the others have said, it has come a long way :sweet:

Wow Hammerhand, this ship is really coming along! The fo'c'sle in particular is very striking. You are doing a fantastic job with this, can't wait to see it done!

Thank you Garmadon, Thomas, and ME.

If I'm able to finish my Challenge II Cat. A entry today, I might be able to get updated pictures of my ship as well.

Great progress you are making with this Hammerhand! I really like seeing the progression and all the changes from your original WIP. Looks so much smoother now with some very natural looking transitions. Looking forward to seeing the finished ship! :sweet:

Thanks Gabe! :classic:

Here's a "teaser" pic... Ok, so it's not really a teaser, since it shows the whole thing, and I'm mostly done, but oh well.
