Enjoy!

Thank you thank you thank you.

At least from the picture of the blue train it looks like it uses the old style train windows in the doors, if so that should make many folks happy (too bad it is in trans blue instead of clear though). The front windows look like an update of this part,

2924b.gif

only reduced to two bricks tall, just he windows. If so, probably an improvement now that we have the corresponding bricks to go below. I wonder what the locomotive looks like behind the cab, does it narrow back to a 4 wide hood or does it stay the width of the cab? I'm guessing the latter so that they can stash the PF bits, but... maybe they do like the maersk and go to 4 wide+ 2 snotted tiles.

The two pictures of the passenger train each show a single car, but there might be a third car between them. It would be a shame if it were only two cars. Although it is not completely clear, it does look like there is a cab on both ends of the train. I personally like the current red passenger train better than these pictures (it looks like a nice regional train), but it is good that lego is changing things up.

I hope that the passenger train will have doors... neither 10233, 7938 nor 7897 have doors, that's a real step backwards in comparison to older passenger trains, and reduces playability.

The Horizon Express has doors, or maybe you mean the traditional lego train doors?

Yes, I am talking about the traditional ones. They look much better than this ugly-blocky door constructions of the Horizon Express.

Hey, NICE blue engine! Probably as close to Mopac livery as Lego'll ever get.

The white one? It looks better than the previous white ones IMO, but I'm glad I picked up two of the current red one.

In my most humble opinion, the nose piece for the High-speed Passenger train is growing on me. First and foremost it is a 'preliminary image' so the end result will not only look better but will have far more detail as supported by the preliminary image of LEGO 7897 Passenger Train in 2006. It had a lot of major detail differences in the final product. Some pieces were not even included and some of the pieces colours were completely changed, all will be revealed in the upcoming toy fairs.

In my opinion I believe LEGO releases singular molded sections for it's sets, like planes, helicopters and trains for a number of reasons. 1.) To make them look more realistic. 2.) To compensate for the small section in which they have to work with, in which using bricks to make it look smooth like the 'real thing' would only drive up the piece count and it may not look good depending on the design they're trying to replicate, like an ICE train for example. 3.) If it can work for planes and Helicopters why not trains? 4.) All sets have to be in a certain range, the passenger train normally being of a lower piece count than the cargo train so the design must fit that category with the design. Making an ICE train replica or inspired design with a non molded piece may drive it's piece count higher than the cargo train.

I agree. The update is nice, and reflects the most recent iteration of the German ICE. The 2006 release looked like the ICE-1 from the '80s, and now you have a revamped design looking more like an ICE-3 / T.

I prefer brick-built solutions for train noses as well, in MOST instances; but in the 6-wide scale, and even larger - I honesty haven't seen anything brick-built that does these sleeker types of trains justice (with all due respect to the builders who have tackled them!) You're not going to sell a passenger train concept to a kid where the business end of the sleek train doesn't look right.

The Horizon Express bucked this trend, but also incorporate only a few relatively new parts (like the windshield, if I recall) to make it work.

I'm very much looking forward to the passenger train. :)

Oh, and another comment - the nose on the 7897 fits TERRIBLY. IMHO, LEGO had still not quite gotten back on track by 2006, and it is a pretty lousy design. This way, you can just pretend the 7897 never happened.

Thank you ritzcrackerman, very well said. I completely agree with everything you expressed. I'm sure the toy fair pictures and the final product will show that this nose piece looks even better, the more I look at it the more I really like it and I am very excited for it to come out. When I look at 7897, it just doesn't look as modern compared to the new one, which is obvious as to why and I completely agree that this new piece needs to be made so we can pretend 7897's flaw never happened.

For me one of the most disappointing aspects of 7897 is that basically all of it's advertising, box, instructions, catalogues all showed it not having the flaw, they all showed it having no gap and being perfectly aligned with the set, however on further viewing, you can actually see light coming through the gap, on the box and the catalogues! Which means LEGO knew about the issue whilst they were taking the photo of the set to place on the box and they just edited it out :( So now we have this nice new sleek mold and hopefully soon we will see how great it is.

@Er!k: The link worked just fine for me.

This freight train might just be the first trains set since the Maersk Train that I've actually considered buying. I love that new blue windshield, and those blue doors (if they are not printed) will be a huge help for my UK passenger cars in BR blue.

I can't wait until the Toy Fair pics start rolling in!

When will that be?

The British Toy Fair is January 21st, but we don't usually get pictures there. German one is January 29th, and we usually get a few pictures there. The United States one is February 16th, and we get so many pictures there!

Link no longer works, thread has been deleted or something. Did anyone save the images or have a link to another site that has some?

I can only find 'em here at the moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiAIbz3xj4w

the new trains look interesting, but they really need to make a green cargo train again, that looked so much better than blue

I wonder what colour they will be. I hope for large train windows in green but that isn't likely since train windows seem to be out of fashion (in that they are being used less) and I've been told by LEGO designer Mark Stafford that green isn't a popular colour among kids.

Mark Stafford killed teal  , what does he have to say about colors that are not popular, everyone loved teal

Now-now, let's not go pointing fingers here. "Everyone loved teal"? Your presumption is based upon the AFOL community alone. The company invests a lot of time into focus testing and research before any wave of products are released, and if children don't like teal-coloured pieces as much as others, then so be it.

Not sure about the station, there are a few bits that don't look right. For example there is a tall structure that covers the track but it is too short to be a roof over the platform/track. Also a small bucket shaped thing half way up the wall, looks like the bottom half of a large rock? The station appears more cargo terminal of some type than passenger station at least from what I can see, which admittedly is not much? Seems to have a taxi though?

I won't disagree there since green is far more useful to me.

While by his own admission he allowed teal to die, it was to save dark purple, and I'd never be able to build a 1920's Rheingold without that. Besides he's also responsible for Dark Azure which is a better fit for what I wanted to use Teal for anyway .

Mark takes his job as a toy designer pretty seriously, and he would only say something like that if he had some market research to back him up. He'll still slip green windows into a set if he thinks that would please AFOLs and not hurt sales to kids so we might get lucky.

I bought the Yellow Freight train and its a fun set, but living in America, the yellow loco just does not grab my attention since it looks like nothing I see out on the real rails. This new Blue Freight Train loco has grabbed my attention. Hopefully that set has some real straight track with it, not just curves and flexible track like the Red Passenger Train.

I think that bucket shaped thing you are referring too will be a timetable sign which is yet to have a sticker applied. It looks like they are going for the modern glass and steel frame look alot of new stations tend to have these days. I'm not sure how that roof piece over the track works but I guess when we see it in its full form it will make sense.

Well, I have never seen such a yellow freight train in Europe as well, the old LEGO trains and sets like the Emerald Night and Horizon Express look more like real trains (and of course the BNSF and SF too).

This, to me, is a big disappointment...

Every year the sets seem to get worse. The 7938 train we had the past years was a wonderful smaller passenger set, but this is a huge way back.

I'm not being funny here, but your 'disappointment' is based on small grainy photos of part of a catalogue showing a very small part of a preliminary image of the set.

Why not wait until you see high quality images of the full, definite set, before making a judgement?
