I definately perfer to get them sealed, because then I get the box for my collection (in other words, to throw in a pile in the garage) and I know that all of the pieces are the original pieces, not replacements from other sets, and in mint condition, but if its used, I don't care much about the box.

Edit: To add to this, if I want, say, 10 rebel battle packs, and someone was selling them opened but in good condition for $5 each, I would get 1 sealed from the store, but the rest (assuming the person has enough) used. In this specific case I would probably just buy the minifigs after the first set, but that's beside the point.

Instructions are nice, but you can usually get them off the internet. I wouldn't pay extra for the box, since the set wouldn't stay in the box for very long.

I normally only buy misb sets, however in a few rare cases, like old space sets, I will buy used sets, and in such a case, I dont care if they come with the box.

I highly prefer original instructions, however. :-$

I used to care a lot about boxes. But the problem with boxes, like everything else, is that they take up space. I had over 100, and even with boxes in boxes, it was still too much. So I sold the lot on e-bay, got a hardly reasonable amount for them. I don't really collect sets anymore and mainly buy them for parts. In the long run, I'm keeping the boxes for the "special" sets I get like the modular town buildings, trains, certain licensed stuff, and sets over 30 years old.

I would consider paying extra for a boxed set if it was from the 1950s-1970s since I'm very interested in that time period. I would also pay more for a boxed airport shuttle since that was probably my favorite set as a child and has the most nostalgic value.

I'll pay a little extra for a set in a box, if it's something I intend to keep in it's original build (my first set of just about anything). Somehow, an unboxed set doesn't feel like a set at all, it just seems like something someone put together out of spare parts. For spares, I'd treat an unboxed set like a parts lot and pay less accordingly.

Instructions are an entirely different story. I download them from LEGO, I download them from Peeron or that place in the Netherlands, but I also like having a printed set, even more than a box.

I would actually pay a fair amount more for some of the better boxes, the kind with trays and inserts and a nice heavy flap lid with all the extra action shots and alternate builds. Those are a work of art. *wub*
