Hey everyone,

I didn't see a topic for this so... Might as well post one! In your opinion, what is the best LEGO set ever? It can be in terms of cool parts, minifigures, or anything else you can think of!

To get the discussion kicked off, I personally like the old Space sets, especially Blacktron (if you can't tell by my user photo id  ), but I admit that those were definitely not the best sets ever produced.

So what do you think?

Totally subjective, but MY favourite set, and therefore the best set ever in my eyes is the 6399 Airport shuttle. Sure, the playability was a bit limited with the track layouts and its a real pain to incorporate into town scenes, but I love it to bits.

It still makes people Ooooh and Aaaaah today, even though its 23 years old. Its the only set I'd never ever sell from my collection - and that includes all the SW UCS sets and most of the Classic Town series.

As a kid the best set ever was that big blue classic spaceship...

I remember the set as the first (and maybe only one?) with a decent playfeature: opening backside with room for the small vehicle.

As an adult I must say the Haunted House is the best. Great theme, beautiful architecture, terrific playfeatures like the dollhouselike opening, great minifigs... In all, a brave statement from Lego.

But i've got to mention the Vampyre Hearse... Also from the Monster Fighterstheme. As this set made me buy and build with Lego again since the 80's. It gives me inspiration to this day.

My favorite set has always been Fort Legoredo. It was the first big set I ever owned. I have three of them now.

There are a lot of great pirates sets too. It'd be hard to choose just one of those.

As was said before, completely subjective, but my two favorite sets are:

6990 Monorail Transport System

6285 Black Seas Barracuda

It's a combination of nostalgia, fun builds, and impressiveness. Both of these sets still impress people when they see them set up, and they are over 20 years old. They represent the pinnacle of my childhood Lego collection as they were the largest sets I owned. While I love all of my Lego, these are the two sets I could never get rid of.

Plenty of sets, old and new, have been pretty fantastic (the entire Egypt and Orient Expedition Adventurers lines, anyone?), but my favorite set would probably have to be 4840 The Burrow from Harry Potter. It was a great-looking model, great value for money, and offered a slew of important Harry Potter characters that I thought we'd never see officially in LEGO form after the HP line had previously trailed off. Three of those characters, plus the printed-pants on Ginny, remain exclusive to that set!

I loved it so much in my review that I got called a pedophile. But I don't care, the Ginnyfigure is worth it.

Second vote for 6285 Black Seas Barracuda.

I have to confess, it's still packed away gently. I haven't brought it out yet, because I'm fearful of what my youngest will do to it!

My modern favorite is the 10194 Emerald Night.

In my view it's the 6090 Royal Knight's Castle. It was my first big set and I played with it endlessly. I even remember modding the dungeon to fit more baddies inside it. As a kid that was a big thing for me.

My picks are easy:

10228 Haunted House

10193 Medieval Market (close second)

Even though neither are technically modulars, both are the right size and detailed enough to appeal to fans of modulars, and are just simply more fun to play with given their fantasy themes. The minifigs and run-down details on the Haunted House are really spectacular... it's the set that lifted me out of my dark ages.

Medieval Market is a close second and deserves a place in any castle builder's collection. The water-powered smith's shop was a cool play detail.

This was my ultimate favorite set; I was not a happy camper when the white pieces turned yellowish :(

This set was a Christmas gift from my parents. I played with it 5 days straight flying the plane around my living room. I was in the 7th grade, too. ha-ha!

As a child: 6067 Guarded Inn. Not only did it connect to my other castle sets and provide a bit if variety amongst all the battlements, but I managed to turn it into a cottage, then it was a small country train station for a few years... :)

Of the newer sets, it has to be 10194 Emerald Night - stunning build, stunning model!

Best set ever? Based on shear scale, playability, wow factor and overall general appeal. The one that turns the volume up to 11 in every possible way? 10188 the Death Star. No other set captures quite so much of everything.

10288 Haunted House would be my runner up. Great dollhouse like play features with that delightful mix of fun macabre. Once again hits every right note across an incredibly broad range of fan types.

This would be mine. 497 Galaxy Explorer!

And as an AFOL, post dark-ages, definitely 10030 UCS Imperial Star Destroyer.

My personal favourite is 10213 space shuttle . While I am not a fan of space, vehicles, etc... I found this set to be such a good reproduction of the actual space shuttle. It included also an amazing number of play features and it was really well priced. Finally, it looks really good on display.

For purely personal reasons, I have to go with by beloved 8480 Technic Space Shuttle

8480-1.jpg

It may not be the coolest, prettiest, most complex or most fun kit I've ever done, but it WAS the kit that really pulled me out of my dark age once and for all and set me on the path to become the AFOL that I am today. I put this thing together back in 1996 and nearly two decades later it's still intact (though I had to change the batteries a could times).

TLG has offered a lot of really great sets over the years, but for me this one is "the best ever" because I reminded me of what I was missing by not making time for Lego and made me want all the other wonderful kits even more.
