trippybrowneyes Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 ...if so, what do you like about it? If it doesn't, what would you change about it? We have a Lego room with sorted parts in drawers, but the room is dark and since it is filled to the brim, the only place to build is a small section of floor. I end up building on the kitchen table and having to walk back and forth to get pieces, which doesn't exactly inspire me to build. The room is getting a makeover after the leaky windows are replaced, and I want the new space to be easy to use (in terms of being able to easily find and access parts) and to feel like a place I want to be. AFOL SF Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 ...no, it does not, but it does inspire me to buy more Lego... Quote
Toby Adams Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 My city inspires me to build because I get Bruizer from HF to smash it....so I can spend my time wisely repairing it ! Quote
ShaydDeGrai Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 My current Lego set-up does inspire me to build, but not in Lego. I really need to refinish the attic and give this stuff more dedicated space. So much Lego, so little space. Maybe I should just take over the neighbors house and call it a Lego Museum. Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Eh, to a degree. It's pretty nice, but I'm running out of room for drawers. Quote

That's pretty much my own case, as well. If anything, my "current set-up" inhibits me from building, in that I have shelves full of unopened sets and no dedicated build space - yet. But I'll take care of that... Edited April 4, 2014 by Blondie-Wan Quote
Andy D Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) I would not say that my current set-up "inspires" me to build, but it does not inhibit me from building. I have dedicated storage space for unopened sets, dedicated space for display of completed models, dedicated space for parts (although not completely sorted, cataloged and organized) and most importantly a dedicated build space. When I get things out, I must replace them to keep my room as neat and as organized as possible, for it is clutter that can inhibit my inspiration and building. Neatness counts! Hrw-Amen Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 The trouble I have is that one wall of the conservatory is taken over by drawers full of bits and my desk. It does inspire me to build, the problem is that I then have nowhere to put things once they are built. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I think very little inspires me to build secondary to lack of time available for LEGO building. My current set up is built in shelves in our basement. Almost all of the shelves have sets/mocs displayed on them. Underneath I have all of my bricks sorted out of the way. I have a designated area for unopened boxes. I really only have the floor to actually build things, so that is a downer, but I could set up a collapsible table to build on. The lighting in my LEGO room is poor, so that doesn't help either. AND it is cold being in the basement. Now that it is finally warming up outside, it might not be so bad, but you basically can't go down there in the winter. The changes I'd want to make: add better lighting, even a desk lamp or something. Add in a table that is nearby my bricks so the build would be seamless. And get a space heater. Oh ,and lots of time! Then I will be able to build. Quote

antp Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 My current setup is at least inspiring enough to have a Lego version of it : The rest of the apartment: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=89706entry1768166 I usually build sets in the living room while watching TV, but for MOCs this desk is better (despite not being very big), as I have direct access to all the parts (some are hidden in the photo, as there are others in & under the desk). Tuinman Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 No it doesn't. It is in a closet so my little kids wouldn't grab it, smash MOC's into pieces or -the only real problem - choke on small pieces. Quote

rob-cubed Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I don't have a LEGO room (but need one). I have to juggle around crates of parts just to get to the piece I'm looking for. No real room for displaying, just building. I still have a few boxed sets in the corner that haven't been opened. What inspires me is forums like this one. Other people and their ideas. That's what gets me motivated. Quote
Gnac Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) Right now I am inspired to have all the parts from the Creator Minis sets, x3. I made a PHP script to read the CSV files from Brickset, cache the images from LEGO.com on my HD, and slowly but surely, I am making orders on CrackLink and ticking off the elements in my little script. I am just a few dozen pieces away from having a pair of nieces who will probably know nothing of all the effort that has been made to stop them thinking: "OH YOU WANT THAT? WELL I WANT THAT TOO, AND ONLY ONE OF US WILL GET IT" Having an organised drawer-based storage system has been invaluable here, but I must also extoll the virtues of those sturdy clear trays that Tesco Tiramisus come in, because they are pretty good for pouring bits into. I have eaten three dozen of the things, and I am now sick of them. EDIT: oh, to make this more relevant, it's good to know that I have the physical and digital resources to track my parts, so I can pour EVERYTHING into a pile and have those two little madams stay quiet for a couple of hours, and not worry about rebagging all the parts into their respective canisters later on. cosmicpurr Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 for me, I don't need environmental support to build brick creations. first steps of an idea occurs in my head and I go from there to where i really don't know!! shapes along the way I guess Quote
trippybrowneyes Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Maybe I should just take over the neighbors house and call it a Lego Museum. Even if you could do that, you still would run out of space. Somehow the lesson I am learning is that as much space as you have, you will find Lego to fill it! When I get things out, I must replace them to keep my room as neat and as organized as possible, for it is clutter that can inhibit my inspiration and building. Neatness counts! (maybe that should be my new motto for 2014) Andy D Putting Lego away takes so much time though...I'm almost considering combining some drawers that I previously sorted to facilitate the sorting process. The trouble I have is that one wall of the conservatory is taken over by drawers full of bits and my desk. It does inspire me to build, the problem is that I then have nowhere to put things once they are built. I think you just made me realize that my organizing efforts are futile. I think by filling up the second bedroom with Legos, we've effectively said no to having kids, because where would the kid sleep? antp Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 (edited) That's a nice setup for a small space (and nice Lego representation too!) Where do you put your MOCs when you're done with them? Thanks. Like for most of the sets, I do not keep my MOCs. After photos I disassemble them. Not sure yet about this one when it will be finished, I'll make keep it a little longer but probably not forever: I prefer re-use the bricks than have to buy new ones. I keep a few sets on display in the living room (modular buildings) and in another room (model team and a few other vehicles), and a few sets in boxes for putting in display from time to time (haunted house on halloween, winter village in winter, ...) droomangroup Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 why yes it does... it's not crazy sorted, but since i share with my 9yo i kept the sorting simple, some color, some type. we may refine in the future but so far it works ok for our needs and collection. Quote

I love that building table!! Did you build it yourself? Is the top hand-painted or a decal? The space looks very serene. I've been thinking about doing grey walls for my Lego room, so it's nice to see what it could look like as a backdrop to brightly colored bricks. How do you keep it so clean? Or is this a "before" picture? ;) Quote
droomangroup Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I love that building table!! Did you build it yourself? Is the top hand-painted or a decal? thanks! i did build it myself. it's a simple "farm table" made from 4x4's and 2x4's, if you google around you can google "farm table 4x4" and you find several instructions. i just shortened it a bit and added casters on the bottom then did a black melamine top trimmed with pine strips. it's pretty easy to make the only thing that's spendy about it is that i bought a Kreg pocket hole jig to make it which is like $90 or something, but i used it for four other tables in a craft room i made for my wife, so it was worth it. the design on the top is an original design i made a while ago and is a decal i cut on my vinyl cutter :) The space looks very serene. I've been thinking about doing grey walls for my Lego room, so it's nice to see what it could look like as a backdrop to brightly colored bricks. How do you keep it so clean? Or is this a "before" picture? ;) we LOVE the grey, this room is adjacent to our craft room which has an accent wall of lime green that looks awesome. i got the grey color at home depot, it's a behr color "Anonymous 780F-5" that is a before picture, but it stays pretty clean, we try to resort/clean up every week or so. i think what i need now is more shelves for displaying MOCs and the like. Love that table! thx :) Quote
Fritzy Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 What a pleasant and organized work space. Well done on the table also. Quote
dr_spock Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 I think I have to change my ways. It used to work when I had fewer bricks. Quote
