"You'd have to ask the Cardinal. She let slip to us that it was a test. Perhaps some inquisitive bar patrons she also would've been rid of? We're a very large organization monk. Our agendas and motives may sometimes differ, but ultimately we all pledge ourselves to the same Crown, and to the same cause. If she really wanted you dead, you would be dead. We have many resources at our disposal. The debt? Heroica killed one of our oldest teams several years ago. They were part of the Cardinal's sect. She decided it would be fair to have it repaid by having Heroica track down an assassin that had been pestering her. In a way, you smoothed the relations between our two organizations, over an issue you did not know existed."

"A test! Pah! She is a liar and someday I will get my hands on her and end her for her evil intentions. I've heard that speech before about if someone wanted me dead, I would be dead, but it's never true. You all try to make yourselves sound so powerful, but more often than not, you're just pathetic lunatics. Look at the way you hide your faces even. If you are so powerful, you wouldn't be afraid to show yourselves.

"I will not take it as a complement that I helped to smooth any relations between Heroica and your organization. Even in the state Heroica is in presently, I still half suspect that the heroes who killed one of your 'oldest teams' were probably very just in doing so. Nevertheless, your intentions here seem decent as far as they can be. I am willing to help you end the corruption of this abomination since that was my reason for coming here anyway. Whatever happens from there...well...we shall see won't we?"

"I tend to agree with Pretzel. I destroy evil, not the unnatural, but if our goals are aligned in this instance then it would be folly to disregard additional help."

I nod appreciatively at Soryx.

"Always a pleasure to work with you. You should stop by the hall sometime."

"We came into being knowing nothing. I was first and all was dark. In Selenrae I found knowledge. Intelligence. Purpose. Where you see terror I saw hunger. Selenrae died many many years ago. Her kin must know much. Have much place in the world. We cannot avenge the elves but now it seems we can find them. We found her dead in this room. Working. We touched her bones and understood much. But we could not comprehend how to continue her work." 'Selerae' motions towards the blackened forge. "So we trapped the young one, the apprentice of the inventor. I hoped you would light the great fires and we could avenge her death and continue her work. But you are not at fault for the death of the elves."

"You careless beasts!" I snarl. "Why do you raise to a state of undeath those who rest. I hate all that you stand for. I know not whether Selarae was worthy of life or death, but die she did. The very least you could do was let her body rest in peace. It is this state of possession that had me fighting many a necromancer in my time. Soryx, you know this. You have fought with me against one at least. The dead should be allowed to rest. Their bodies should not be disgraced in this way. You shades want to continue her work, you say? You want to avenge. Vengeance on whom? Do you think any of those who killed you still live? Our resident demon has already told you otherwise. Fools! You say that you wish to destroy and you were going to use the gnomes for that purpose no doubt. If we had not stopped you, you would have gone about destroying everything and everyone in your 'quest for answers.' We have stopped the majority of the threat, but your blackened souls are unchanged. It would be pointless for us to leave you be. If nothing else, we do you a favour by laying you to rest. Torment the lifeless no more, I command you!"

I listen impatiently to the rangers conversation with the possessed elf.

"Don't give in," I mumble. "You are on the right track and doing well. I can see you have had many experiences that have shaped you greatly. It is good, but make sure your feelings don't prevent you from making righteous judgment. It's been a pleasure working with you thus far."

"I will not falter," Em mutters through clenched teeth, though whether it was more to himself or Pretzel was unclear. He relaxes slightly, a small grin forming on his face, though his eyes still betrayed his unease. "I've killed many. To falter for one would be the greatest of injustices."

"You would exterminate my kind then, for finding what life and purpose we could in our sudden existence? For praising those who offered us the only guidance we could find?"

Wally looked genuinely terrified.

"I really don't like any of this..."

"Sometimes...people have to make tough decisions, Wally."

"Don't feel any pity or guilt for these unnatural beings, ranger. They chose to 'praise' these elves by conquering the nearest civilized settlement. They are a threat and so must be destroyed."

"You cannot!"

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"Silence, you miserable wretch. And don't get in our way. I'd like to take you in alive, but I've sacrificed far more than one fool U'Kin for our cause."

We were hired to end the threat to this community. If you still pose a threat, then our purpose is to destroy you. Given your first action after creation was attacking the people of Zylstra, it is reasonable to expect you will do so again. Jeaux observed the group who had just joined them. Their faces seemed to echo the blank expression of his own, but they seemed more like masks than their true selves. He couldn't help but wonder who would choose to hide their true selves behind such an artificial presence.

Selenrae's empty eyes dissolved into their sockets, revealing only the blackened substance associated with the shades.

"We were brought into this world with nothing. We found solace in those that had been dead for centuries. If we were to fill the void left by their death we would begin by avenging them. We spared them because we wanted answers before vengeance. Now we find our caution and restraint to be met only with slaughter and extermination."

The elf paused. The color returned to its eyes.

14563347412_71e2ba9460_t.jpg

"Please do not make us destroy you."

Everyone bold your decision. This comes down to a vote. Majority rules and party leader gets the final say in case of a tie, but that doesn't seem likely.

Em nods, jaw set. "You speak too lightly of destruction, of vengeance. You are dangerous. I do not believe you can be redeemed."

He readies his bow, prepared to engage in battle with the shade.

"So you acted without knowing and from the sound of it you wish to continue to do so. Why do you insist on staying in this world? You do not belong here. You belong in another world, whether it be the one above or the one below. I am fairly certain I know where your destination is, but in any case, you do not belong here. If your purpose for being on this earth is to seek answers so that you can cause greater destruction, then you have no business here. If you don't put up a fight, we will dispatch you cleanly and effortlessly to whichever realm you belong. If, however, you resist..."

I turn to the leader of the Crimson Crown.

"I do not like your organization one bit, although perhaps I see you in a slightly more favourable light now than in my last encounter with you. I still hate your cardinal and wish to her life if I should ever meet her since she intended to end mine. Nonetheless, it seems for today, we will side with you as our goals seem to be in alignment, at least as far as dispatching the shadows is concerned."

I stand prepared to engage in combat, but then a thought comes to mind, a temptation more like.

"Gah, won't want to soil this garment for a fight like this," I mutter, removing my Ethereal Cloak, I then look at the Soul Link Chain in my cart.

There was something about being bonded to the demon that felt strangely...nice? A sense of power perhaps?

Furthermore, I muse, the way he threw off the chain at the end of the last fight makes me wonder whether my power was too much for him and drawing me out. Surely it cannot hurt to experiment. I am sure my soul and connection to the divine is stronger than his connection to the darkness seeing how he seems to have suffered more from wearing the chain than I did.

I cast a glance at Hybros, then, when he doesn't suspect. I tear off his Baron's Pauldrons and force the Soul Link Chain on him, before equipping it myself.

"Let's see how you carry through another fight, imp," I snicker.

It is not the woman who replies to Pretzel, but the man in the cloak and expensive top hat, regal rapier held idly in preparation. His voice is somewhat high pitched and musical despite his strange choice in words.

"Had the guileful Cardinal truly endeavored to extinguish thou's life ye wouldst not be standing here before me. But I doth not pretend to fathom her machinations. We of the Order kill only with purpose and reason. Worry not. Mine methods are less devious, ye will soon find. The artistry of one's mannerisms is as significant as his cause. And my art is in war. In skill. In combat. I am the Scar, and I swear thusly; ye need not fear the blades of neither I nor my vassals."

"You know, many of my enemies have said similar things before I killed them. 'Oh, if I wanted my cronies to kill you, they would have done so. I wanted them to leave you for me. Bwahaha!' But, nope, I'm still alive today having slain every last one of them. I know when someone wants my life and then realizes that trying to take it is not worth it because I kick harder than one would think and my bite is worse even, if you catch my meaning. Soryx, do you think the Crimson Crown members we fought in the tavern were just there to pleasure us? Seemed sincerely eager to kill, no?" I chuckle.

"Anyway, my quarrel is not with you for now, so let's get this task over with and be on our way. The less we have to deal with each other, the better."

Hybros clenched his fists around the staff of Zoot's Reaper. He could feel the tenseness of the room.

The woman turned to Hybros. "You, I'm sure, have doubts given our interference at that Guild event a few months ago. If it helps, you weren't even the target - to put it bluntly, we weren't even aware Heroica had a presence beforehand. Had you not been found in the possession of that sinister device - which I'm sure you know by now caused our current predicament - we probably would've even offered you our assistance there as well."

"Yes, I remember your kind clearly. That one with the metal mask in particular... I was sure we killed him during that time in the square." He shoots a nasty look at the Crimson Crown Abomination. "You never did explain why you attacked us, but I suppose none of that matters now. How did you know about the events occurring here? How did you get down here?" He asked, trying to hide his interest with a flat tone.

"It does not matter if your methods are different than those in the square that time, either. Your mission is pointless - you swear to eliminate all that is magic and unnatural, good or evil. Who are you to destroy anything you think is unnatural without discrimination...? Some would argue your kind is unnatural - should we then destroy you by your own standards? And it is not magic or the divine that kills, but the person who wields it. My scythe has not taken lives, I have. To argue differently would be refusing the blame, the responsibility. Your organization is made of cowards, who refuse to believe anything except what they have sworn to believe in whichever oath they swear to you."

He answers to Pretzel and the rest of the party. "The Crimson Crown once tried to take the painting device from a Eubric newspaper and Wally. We were there to protect it and witness the Crown and another organization try to take it, for reasons similar to theirs for being here. They are not to be trusted."

I hoped you would light the great fires and we could avenge her death and continue her work. But you are not at fault for the death of the elves."

Hybros was conflicted. The Doctor was right; the shades had not killed anyone, not yet at least. But their hostility showed, and the vengeance they swore did not bode well for Zylstra or anywhere else. The Crimson Crown could not be trusted, either. And the shades... a new species only looking for answers, and a way to live, to survive. Could they be blamed? Their purpose was similar to Hybros', and his people, if they still existed. If the imps were met with the same hostility, all of his efforts would be for nothing."No..." he whispered to himself. "I can not let this happen."

He looked to the shade, who, like the others, had reminded him of a hero he once met, a small creature. De'kra. A mysterious, shrouded character with an insatiable curiosity. Hybros wondered if he was the result of a similar experiment or occurrence. "Selenrae, erm... shade. I think I understand. Knowledge is the key to survival, and for your people it is the only way. But vengeance... it is something you must not pursue. The Elves of Moone may be able to answer your questions, and you can go there. But you must promise something, and that is to not seek vengeance. You will not find anything. Will you promise this?"

All of a sudden, Pretzel clapped the Soul Link Chain back onto Hybros' wrist, before he could react. "Hey!" he exclaimed. But it was too late, he had become the Soul Link's prisoner again. He tried wriggling his hands out of the chain, but its grip only seemed to tighten, causing his Sticky Gloves to slide off. He found himself beginning to eye the Shade with suspicion as he waited for an answer, somehow doubting what he had just hoped to do would work at all. "Monk!" He glared angrily. "If it was not for this chain binding our souls I would kill you now. And if we live through this, I just may."

8742461929_981dfe702c_t.jpg

"Indeed...though given how expansive this organization is, perhaps they could have tried harder. I believed we had been fighting a gang of thugs, not what this woman claims them to be."

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"Very well, monk. Words clearly will not sway you from your preconceptions."

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"Look at your friend the monk. There is some reason in him or he would not agree we need to help one another. But he abandons reason and logic daily in order to pay homage to his deity. There are millions others on this world who play pawns to their gods to placate themselves into thinking their lives are fulfilled by their acts. What do the gods do? They use them. They manipulate them. Read any myth from any pantheon and you'll find in almost every one mortals suffering because a god wishes to illustrate a moral or establish dominance. Who are we to destroy the unnatural? Who are the gods to toy with our lives in this way? Magic is just the same. Ether is the manifestation of the god Ethereth. You'll find scholars that argue divine and conventional magic are different, but in reality they all draw from the gods themselves. Mortals have more potential than you could imagine. If only I could explain it to you."

The marked shift in tone could not be more significant. The woman's voice had gone from annoyed and exasperated to one that was utterly engrossed in her cause.

"You speak as though some otherworldly power governs what place we have in this world, what we can say, what we can do. But mortals are underestimated. We have a drive the gods cannot hope to match. Anance could not see it."

14390167818_a676afb850_t.jpg

"Avina."

The Scar's voice was suddenly quite stern. The woman - Avina, apparently - looked over at him, paused, then looked back at Hybros.

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"We are not faceless soldiers. These masks signify we are but adherents of the Order when we wear them. But every man and woman you've killed joined us out of their free will, because they saw the truth in our ways. And every single one followed those ways to the end. We would not jeopardize our mission here by betraying you."

Hybros was conflicted. The Doctor was right; the shades had not killed anyone, not yet at least. I turn to the Crimson Crown member.

"Why did you attempt to take the machine? What is your business with it?"

I then turn and look beyond the moon elf at the shadows.

"Do you not understand? You have no business roaming the earth in this torment. Do you think vengeance will satisfy you? Then what? You will wander the earth randomly with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Oh, no. Your destroys are long gone. You will never find them. The one to blame is he that awakened you from your sleep and brought you into this anguish of mind. Like I said, you have no business in this world. You are nothing but a phantom, a spirit. If you were indeed destroyed by whom I have a feeling you were, then it was for the good of all the world. Perhaps not all of you were wicked, but likely the wickedness was so great that there was no chance to save the few righteous. From your actions, though, I doubt you were righteous in any way. You are probably one of those who was indoctrinated by demons and sold your soul to their cause.

"Now as far as the gnomes are concerned, it may be true that you did not kill any of them, but is possessing their minds any less horrific. No. I say, it is moreso. You tampered with their very ability to make choices. You put your mind in theirs and ruined their lives.

"'Doctor,' if you even are a doctor, I do not see how you can work so closely with these gnomes and care so little for them. It is despicable. If I am not mistaken, these creatures shackled up your apprentice and stole the will of his people and yet you support them and their cause. Pray tell, what if they were to take over your mind and roam the streets kidnapping people? Would you be as friendly to them? I should think not, unless you are so infatuated that you have no mind of your own anymore either."

I turn mutter discreetly under my breath to Soryx and Em.

"I half think that we should get rid of this shadowed menace and then rid ourselves of this gang after that. Clearly, they are not too be trusted and from my dealings with them and what I've heard from them, I wouldn't be surprised if they turn around and try to slay us all once we are done. I have no love for their organization, even if they claim that their goals are noble enough. Frankly, every time they speak I would wish to bash their brains in so the world can be rid of their filth. What do you say?"

"We attempted to destroy it. It was a quite unnatural melding of advanced technology and magic. The oaths of those present demanded they try and destroy it at once. It could've been extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. As evidenced here."

"We could not take all of them. The elf implies there are more shades left and the Crimson Crown associates never seem to be alone. Plus I do not doubt they would levy a truce in order to destroy us together. I'm afraid we must make our choice."

Again, everyone make your choice. As soon as a majority is reached I can start the battle.

Hybros gritted his teeth. He found himself agreeing with Pretzel more and more. Was it the Soul Link Chain turning him to the Monk's ways, or was the situation really as hopeless as it seemed?

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"You speak as though some otherworldly power governs what place we have in this world, what we can say, what we can do. But mortals are underestimated. We have a drive the gods cannot hope to match. Anance could not see it."

"I could not agree with you more. In all of my years of traveling I have experienced that only we have power. We have choices over our own lives, and I pay no debt to any god. Only my own purposes. I have realized this potential, but it seems you are just as blinded by your cause as the many you claim to be to their gods are. You see no other alternative to destroying what you see as unnatural."

Hybros turned away. He muttered, half to himself and half to the party, "I would like to kill these masked fools very much... eheh."

14563347412_71e2ba9460_t.jpg

"But...they were killed, all of them. Without reason, without warning. We can find the murderers. I am sure of it. They gave us form. We must avenge them. Repay our debt."

Hybros looked on sadly. "...Then there is no choice. We have already told you that there will be no one to take vengeance on, and your quest to find it will only hurt more people. I... I am sorry, but I can not let you continue to do this." Reluctantly, he drew his sword and leveled it at the shade. He could only hope that his own people would be more reasonable, and not put in a situation like this one.

He spoke firmly to the Crimson Crown without moving his focus from the shade. "Do not get in our way. This moment of similar interest does not mean an alliance between us, and if I see you again after this I will not hesitate to kill you."

Selenrae steps forward, eyes washing black once again. Black ink crawls down from the ceiling and form into shades even as the ceiling crumbled, the individual blocks floating in a circular path beneath the concentrated sphere of pure moonlight created by the beam that's been following the heroes. The shadows cast by the blocks moving in front it shift and warp on the ground below them.

14400793797_2e4a4b31b2_t.jpg

"Then you shall feel the sorrow of the Moon Elves in our wrath."

U'Reeka clenches his fists.

9926370953_60ab54bddd_t.jpg

"No. I cannot let you do this. They do not have any less reason to live than you do."

He pulls a device from his pouch, and sets it down. It unfolds to a much larger size, revealing yet another AIUPIIUP - but this one was not possessed by the shades. The lens seemed to resemble the barrel of a cannon more.

"I thought Heroica could be trusted to save lives where they could, not kill anything that may become a threat I thought."

Wally jumps forward, between U'Reeka and the heroes.

9926370773_7712ebe8ae_t.jpg

"Wait! You can't kill the Doc! It's - it's not - this isn't what you guys do!"

Erveka reached out, pulling him backward and restraining him even as he struggled.

14258927144_d0e7cf73da_t.jpg

"This isn't our fight Wally, none of it is!"

9926370953_60ab54bddd_t.jpg

"Do not interfere Wally. I could not let you come to harm. I could not. I am sorry for what has happened to Zylstra. You have been an excellent student you have. I hope...you have more success than I have. Heroes...I...I am sorry for creating the shades, but I cannot condone this....I am sorry."

14576013022_b502683781_t.jpg

"Sorry kid. It's for the best." Avina turned to the abomination. "Stay in the tunnel, make sure none of these things escape." The man nodded and lumbered off into the cavern. She and the Scar took their place by the heroes and joined the party as the shades swarmed forward.

"Doctor, you are making a mistake. But if this is what you wish... then so be it." Hybros uses his Tiger Balm on Shadowed Selenrae from the back row, then swaps his Cloak of the Red Assassin for the Cloak of the Blue Assassin.

Melvin sings Lucky Chant from the back row.

Posted (edited)

"We attempted to destroy it. It was a quite unnatural melding of advanced technology and magic. The oaths of those present demanded they try and destroy it at once. It could've been extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. As evidenced here."

"Seeing its effects, I suppose I have to, reluctantly, agree with you this once."

"I do care you fool! If I had my way I would have stopped the elves if I had my way! Does this misunderstanding mean they deserve to die?!"

"If you had your way? Do you understand what you have done even?

"How can these shades die when they aren't even alive. They died hundreds or thousands of years ago. They are dead already. We are just removing their presence on this earth so they need not be a threat? Is that wrong? If their sole purpose for being here is vengeance, then why should their presence remain. They are dead! How many times do I need to repeat it? Why do you protect the things you create? You appear to not have control over them, but how can we know that for certain. If indeed you do not, that may be even more worrisome because we are at the point where such beings can take orders directly from a machine, a non-living entity whose creator can no longer control it. I don't want to kill you, whatever you are, for Wally's sake, but if you stand in the way of us protecting him and his people, then there's nothing we can do. Wally may desire the learning he gets from you over the safety of his people, but he cannot speak for all the gnomes. We have to do what's best for them all. Perhaps it's all for the best if you go too though. It seems that you haven't been much of a positive influence on your understudy."

Hybros turned away. He muttered, half to himself and half to the party, "I would like to kill these masked fools very much... eheh."

He spoke firmly to the Crimson Crown without moving his focus from the shade. "Do not get in our way. This moment of similar interest does not mean an alliance between us, and if I see you again after this I will not hesitate to kill you."

I look at the demon approvingly.

"I very much agree with you," I mutter to Hybros. "Perhaps we should partner more often."

I'm not sure if its the Chain talking, but I shut up real quick.

However I start up again almost as soon:

"You fools understand nothing of which you are speaking. It's like you are hitting on all the right results for all the wrong reasons. I cannot bear to look at you. You seem to indicate that anything that is not in alignment with your beliefs are illogical and unreasonable. God has every right to be involved in human-life to any degree he chooses. Do you even understand what ether is? Ether is a gift from God, but too many people use it for evil and for their own agendas. Divine and conventional magic are different. Very different! I will not even begin to go there to discuss them, but I will say that you are clearly out of your depth. I suggest you close your mouth and get fighting before you really make us feel like lobbing it off permanently. I know a few persons who wouldn't be disappointed to do just that."

Stopping from my oration for a brief moment, I size up my opponents, looking for the weak spot.

I make my decision.

Surging forward, I strike first Shade A, then Shade B from the Back Row with the Heavy Flail.

"Die you abominations!"

Soryx swings into action as well, attacking Selenrae with Dastan Dual Axe (Double) from the Back Row.

Seeing the doctor take an offensive position against the group, Jeaux turns to address him. "I do not dispute they have as much right to exist as any of us, but it is our mission to stop the threat to Zylstra and they have done nothing to indicate the mission has yet been fulfilled. If you choose to ally yourself with them, you will also be considered a threat to Zylstra and shall share their fate." He fires a warning shot at the doctor with Eminus from the back row before firing a round from his handcannon at Shade C from the back row. Scar seems to show a determined focus, dealing two swift attacks from the back row to Selenrae.

U'Reeka repairs AIUPIIUP

Melvin sings so loudly and boisterously everyone can't help but feel hopeful for the battle. Em slurps down a Mead. Pretzel distracts one shade with his shield, swinging his flail into another and leaving a neat gash. Jeaux fires a warning shot into U'Reeka's side, but is immediately overpowered by a shade who knocks him into the ground. Soryx starts hacking at Selenrae with the help of the Scar, as Hybros cripples the shadowed elf and switches out his cloak. Avina takes a moment to whip up a helpful brew as the Scar raises his hand commandingly to the shades, preventing them from dealing even further damage.
