Jeaux notices the multiple dark spots on the wall. He takes a closer look at the wall to try and determine why those areas did not reflect any of the light from his spell.

The three distinct patches of the darkness were completely out of place, strongly resembling shadows, yet completely unaffected by any light they were exposed to.

"They appear to be humanoid in shape. Grim."

Hybros peers at the letter that Em was holding. "Open the next one." He returns inside the store in time to see Jeaux cast a lightning spell, exposing the room and the dark patches along the wall. "Humanoid? Could some sort of magic steal these people and leave their shadows behind?" Hybros then checks behind the counter for the device referred to in the letter.

"Possibly."

Hybros doesn't find the device, but he does find what seemed to be referred to as the payment.

"Mmm," Em rumbles for a second. After inspecting the first letter for a moment, Em quickly slices open the next letter, careful not to damage it.

The barrel is sealed shut. The box is full of fragile-feeling mechanical parts.

"These fragmented mechanical parts were likely the machine that Wally sent to Shelby...or was it the other way around. Shelby, in case you fellows don't know was the trinket-seller down here. I know Wally too."

I inspect what looks like bottles on the shelf to see if there is anything of use.

"Ehem, yes, Wally apparently has become more connected with those that make these devices. I have been on a few quests that involved escorting such devices. One was a machine that could play music somehow, and the other was... the one that was mentioned in the letter here. The painting machine. I suppose it came into the possession of Shelby here at some point after we escorted it for Wally and the Eubric Herald."

Jeaux placed the Amethyst in his briefcase next to the Topaz

Jeaux walked over to the crate of mechanical parts to take a closer look. "What exactly was this painting machine? What was its function?"

"I do not know how it works, just like I do not know how you work. But it made it possible to paint and write on paper for the Eubric Herald very quickly and efficiently - more than a person could do. Apparently it was in high demand since we had to fight through several secret organizations to keep it safe, heh."

"In one of my last quests the Town Watch were using a machine that could paint a picture of an event as it occurred. Strange device! We used to track down a criminal who turned out to be one of their own."

"Mmm," Em rumbles for a second. After inspecting the first letter for a moment, Em quickly slices open the next letter, careful not to damage it.

In the second envelope there appeared to be, not a letter, but a slip of paper, evidently an inventory form of some kind.

'To the Office of the Most Excellent and Marvelous Baron of Zylstra,

INVENTORY

SEASON - YULE

x4 Assorted Gemstones

x2 Barrels of Cooking Mushrooms

x12 Bottles of Healing Draught

x3 Bottles of Spider Antivenin

x1 Crate (misc,.)

Note - specialty items sold very well this season. Significant shortage since Surface Contact during last New Seed. Little consequence if general supplies continue to sell at this rate. Request more Surface Contact for more Unique Items regardless.'

I inspect what looks like bottles on the shelf to see if there is anything of use.

Pretzel finds two different varieties of brews, but he'd have to taste them in order to discern their use.

"If this device behaves similarly, then it may have painted what occurred here." Jeaux searched through the mechanical parts looking for any pieces of parchment.

"Unique Items. Sound ominous," Em remarks offhandedly, frowning slightly. He slices open the next, hoping it revealed more.

'Dearest Vinum -

Last night was amazing. I was admittedly wary at first when you asked me over for dinner, but under that bushy beard is a true gentleman - and such a nimble one at that. I never thought dwarves could be so romantic, but then I didn't think you could squeeze two people onto one of those barstools either! I look forward to another lovely evening as soon as we can meet up again.

Yours,

Shelby'

Jeaux finds no parchment among the mechanical pieces.

"Hmm, what is our next move? We can look at these parts here..." Hybros kicked the crate on the shop floor, and bent down to drag it outside. "That is good thinking about the drawing machine, Jeaux, but it does not appear to be here. Perhaps we can return to the Baron to ask him about that and his other purchases. As well as the location of Wally..."

"Surface Contact..." he mumbled to himself after seeing the inventory list. "They sound like me..."

"Heh, I'm not sure if when Shelby talks about 'Surface Contact' she refers to anyone other than Heroica members. On my last quest when we rescued this village from the Wolfgang my party and I bought just about every item sold here." I chuckle.

"Anyone want to try one of these bottles?" I query. "Automaton, you're the least likely to be negatively affected so to speak." I chuckled again.

"Potions and concoctions seem to affect me just as they would any organic being. I suspect it is related the magical properties of the chemicals involved. We seem to have done a full sweep of the room. I do not expect to find more evidence regarding the disappearance. Perhaps we should move on to the next location, and see if there are any more clues to explain the kidnappings."

The device was somewhat recognizable to Hybros, even disassembled. It was one of Doctor U'Reeka's AIUPIIUPs.

If you guys want to head somewhere else, just bold you choice.

"Hm, yes, these are the parts to one of those painting devices. Like you said, Jeaux, perhaps it could have taken a picture of what happened if it were disassembled since these incidents, but I doubt it, eheh. It seems like these parts have been laying here since Wally delivered them, like the letter said."

Hybros coughs. "Yes, we should move on. Though I would like to check on the Baron again, and ask him about Wally and the shipments in and out of Zylstra."
