An eagle with realistic wing flapping, a honey bird, a swimming fish, whale, turtle, whatever, maybe even a flying dragon. So many animals that could work amazingly as Technic sets Too bad kinetic scultures as a separate theme isnt commercially viable. TLG ran a pilot named Lego Forma and it was shut down after 6 months or sth. Quote

That was an unsuccessful venture by them to get into crowdfunding, so it basically didn't have any mainstream appeal. The closest thing we'd have for comparison would be the Hedwig kinetic sculpture, but I don't know anything about how well that's been selling. I still think that a series of kinetic animal sculptures with realistic movement would totally be possible. Edited December 12, 2020 by Bartybum Quote
konryd Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 There's also the Lego boost cat as well as Lego boost + Ninjago dragon thingy. Both feature credible animal movements using Lego engines. Quote
howitzer Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Animal-themed kinetic sculptures could be conceived as a subtheme of Technic, though I'm not sure how to market them properly among machinery sets. I actually tried to build a mechanical representation of bird's wings flapping, and it was really difficult, it would be nice to see how TLG's set designers would solve the challenges. Then there were someone in this forum who created scarily accurate spider-like things with only PF components (so nothing programmable, like Boost etc.) and I see no reason why TLG couldn't take this kind of concept and adapt it to a set. Or how about something similar to the EB pullback contest winner? Really simple yet effective use of animal theme. Quote

pleegwat Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 I've seen a strandbeest done as MOC. There's also a walking dinosaur in the 8891 ideas book. I agree though that it'd be tricky to make work as a set. Quote
Rudivdk Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 (edited) Apart from the animal discussion (an idea I really like by the way), I'd like to see more multiple-model sets in the future. TLG started small with the road crew, construction site and container yard sets a few years back, and later the car transporter was a much bigger addition to that line. The 'truck+trailer & stuntbike set' also fits this pattern, although it was sub-par as a set imho... I do see good possibilities here: It allows TLG to release smaller builds that wouldn't really sell well separately, mix some colors that wouldn't work together on a single model, and combine some functions that can't be in a single model. And these sets are great for playability which sells amongst kids (and parents). Edited December 15, 2020 by Rudivdk Quote
1gor Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 With new CAT license (if rumors about this year's flagship are correct) this is possible; truck with 94.3 tires and functions like Volvo; hmm... but we had Liebherr mining excavator in 2019... Quote

I started a LEGO Technic Creatures Facebook group. I have a working Technic model of Nemo the clown fish, with mouth and gills, pectoral fins with 2 degrees of freedom, fin folding and tail swishing selectable by gear selectors. The model also has tilt and turn and an anemone that can move; those could be motorised later. I did suggest the animals theme to TLG but they didn't want to make it a regular sub-theme of Technic. I also did a working BB-8 droid before that. This would be expensive with 4 XL motors, 1 servo, lights, 3 IR Receivers and 2 LiPo batteries but it was possible to drive and steer. The Technic sphere was a good challenge. Mark Quote
Maaboo the Witch Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Since we've seen a substantial uptick in licensed sets recently, how about licensed tyres? Quote

1gor Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Perhaps something like this It does not have to be licensed. Real machine (Huddig 1260D) comes in yellow, red (pictured), blue... Quote

N-4K0 Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 There's also 8069 which was my first set as an adult. I thought that red Huddig was a Lännen at first. Quote

Actually it is a multipurpose backhoe; not oy with additional tools like box on cherry picker, bit also for winter service etc. The interesting feature is actually articulated steering and not conventional... 1gor Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 I just hoped that I did not trigger false hopes; there are so much machinery that I would like to build for my collection but so little time Quote
