Toby Adams Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 According to The Brick Show this list is CONFIRMED and is the shortlist for retiring sets. -Super Star Destroyer (Until they run out of stock) -VW T-1 Camper (Until they run out of stock) -Sopwith Carmel (Until they run out of stock) -Pet Shop (Until they run out of stock) -Haunted House (After Halloween?) -Via Jason from The Brick Show (Sorry for typos I have a really new computer that won't let me type on EB) Quote
Godtshep Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Good thing my son got the Pet Shop during February! I only really invest in poly bags so I probably won't get any of these. Quote
Boettner Builds Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) I better get my second Pet Shop, as I have all of the others already Also to confirm, I was told by a LEGO shop that the Super Star Destroyer will only be around until it runs out, no new runs. talos Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 The Super Star Destroyer has been out of stock for a while now on shop.lego.com, it currently says out of stock, with no date for availability, so maybe its already too late.. Quote

I think everyone was expecting Grand Emporium or Town Hall to pass before it. Although I suspect that all three are on the stock from their last production runs, so as they run out they will retire. Pet Shop probably just has the lowest stock at the moment. It makes me think there is a new Modular in the pipeline for late summer or fall release. Quote
Toby Adams Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Wonder what the new Modular will be? I thought the town hall was next though.. Is I true that the SSS is discontinued already? Edited April 16, 2014 by Toby Adams Quote
kwulfe Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Didn't the brickshow told us last year that the Death Star would retire in 2013? It is still there. So the word "confirmed" is quite strong I think. Quote
Toby Adams Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 The word "confirmed" was said for sure. Quote
Malikon Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Glad I picked up the Pet Shop recently. At the Lego store Tuesday night the employee said the Emporium would be next to go. (for what it's worth) Quote
TheLegoDr Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Do they have inside knowledge that no one else seems to have? I'm sure a lot of that is speculation considering those are all older sets, so the quantities available will be slowly going down. It is entirely possible they do have a planned discontinuation of the modulars, but if stock in one depletes before another, they may not do another production run for such a small time frame. Quote
rob-cubed Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 It does seem odd that PS would be the next to go, but maybe it hasn't been selling as well. The GE box is old enough that it still has a picture of the Green Grocer sitting next to it... if I were a betting man, that's where I put my money... Quote
TheOrcKing Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) No offence meant towards The Brick Show guys but I really wonder how much of this is truly confirmed or just what a Lego Store employee told them. I remember one actually saying The Simpsons House was already retiring ....in the same month it just became available. They probably have their sources I guess but considering how long the Death Star keeps staring us all in the face after numerous times of being told "it will be retiring this year" for every single year, I will believe it when it actually comes to pass. Knowing the store that Jason goes to I would say it depends really heavily on specifically which employees they spoke with. There are a few there that are extremely knowledgeable re back end and inner workings things, more so then you will typically find in a store, and I would view as extremely reliable sources. Others however are standard retail types. No idea on anything until it comes off the truck. From watching the video it strikes me that it isn't so much that this is a list of "officially retiring" sets as it is sets that they either do not anticipate getting many or any more pieces of, or that have been disappearing from store order lists. Some sets will have a hard End of Life date to clear shelf space, or they will be moved to discount pricing. These seem more like depletion of stock with no expected restock. A soft retirement if you will. And I can see a good Lego Store clerk being familiar with what sets are trending towards depletion at the distribution level. Quote
Fritzy Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 These seem more like depletion of stock with no expected restock. A soft retirement if you will. That's how I'm seeing it. Still find the list a tad dubious, but I can see how one or two would be impacted under these terms. Quote
Mikeysee Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I don't put much faith in those guys, but the SSD has gone out of stock on Amazon. I wouldn't be surprised if it's on its way out. Quote
badbob001 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Another Star Destroyer is coming out this year so it makes sense to retire the SSS so as to not cause confusion. Quote
Darth Punk Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I wouldn't consider the word of a store employee as confirmation. Especially given how guarded TLG has become about when a set is going to retire. It's not unusual for a store to deplete its stock to make way for newer product. A store only has so much room to display and inventory while online it's a very different story. Yes all these sets will retire, I can confirm that myself. But without inventory numbers or specific time period this doesn't really tell us any more than we already know. Quote

Yes all these sets will retire, I can confirm that myself. But without inventory numbers or specific time period this doesn't really tell us any more than we already know. As I said above. I know the store that Jason goes to. I tend to give them more then a bit of benefit of the doubt. In terms of store stock space they are one of the largest if not the largest in North America. Not just in retail shelf space, but in back room storage capacity. As such they are not very restricted in their stocking by space concerns. They have a nice deep pool and keep a solid stock of everything that is available. And the core staff is knowledgable enough and has enough connections to regional and above to have a very very clear idea of what is going on regarding specific product. If this store is running low on a product it is because it is becoming scarce in the channel and warehouses. The staff does not always know if or when Lego will go back and do another production run of a given set. But they have more than enough experience to make a well informed guesstimate of whether or not that is likely to happen for a given product. They sometimes get surprised (such as the unexpected Fire Brigade production run early last year) but typically they are right. They never provide or know hard retirement dates, unless an IP license is involved (such as Harry Potter) but they can well predict what is going away. Quote
Cwetqo Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 AFAIK Pet Shop will stay another year and Death Star is finaly going out. Quote
badbob001 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I guess I better pick up the Haunted House on the next double points sale. Quote
gunm Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Yeah, I'm looking to get HH too. Already got a PS. As for Amazon, stuff goes in and out of stock there all the time, so I wouldn't put any weight on that as an indicator of retirement. Quote
Anak Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 (edited) Do we have an updated offical list of the sets that will be retiring soon or discontinued in 2020? Is this list legit? https://retiringsets.com/lego-retiring-soon/ I saw some pictures on Instagram about retiring Star Wars and Harry Potter sets, e.g: SW: Death Star, Anniversary Slave 1, Tantive IV HP: Hungarian dragon, graveyard, blue bus, pegasus coach, broom race, great hall, old willow set Edited July 28, 2020 by Anak Quote
