Twilight though?! That has got to be from the same creative minds that chose the BTS set. I mean, what kind of cultural relevance does Twilight still have? Maybe they think that people who grew up with those books are now in AFOL-age territory, and would be nostalgic and want the set? I don't have any stake in it - I think I read the books back in grade school and didn't think much of them - but I feel like pop culture has make it sound like Twilight is just a collective phase everyone went through a decade ago.

Presumably other IDEAS sets such as Home Alone sold, showing that old movies with no new content have nostalgic fans. I haven't read the books or seen the movies, so couldn't care less about the set as a Twilight set. But I imagine they are not aiming the set at someone like me that has bought and occasionally buys current licensed sets. And I might still buy it though if it gets reduced enough. In that sense, it is like Queer Eye. So many people had no interest in the license yet going on number of figures and figure parts sold on bricklink, it has sold reasonably well once clearanced. LEGO can aim for any new group of buyers, and whether or not the sales to that market are good or not, they can still sell the remainder presumably still making money on them. Releasing a niche one-off product generates interest in non-traditional fan groups and makes them money whether the target group buys it or not.

I'm a little surprised that they picked Twilight not because of the subject but because of the way the submission was listed. Maybe it is the way I am reading it, but much of it seems to be a joke as if the submitter has made a parody of the franchise rather than being a fan. But of course, as I have not had any interest in the franchise, it could be that I have misunderstood it.

At the rate things go with IDEAS, right now, seems to take at least a year between IDEAS being picked, and made. the last one, Polaroid , was selected October 2022, and will release in 2024.

So Dungeons and Dragons hopefully will be seen before Q2 2024, but it's a bigger set.

What else exists that is specifically tailored to the Twilight demographic group? Botanicals??

I'm talking female, 30-50 years of age, either already buying Lego for their children or childless and with a little more spending capacity.

I can absolutely see the reasoning behind this as a selected set.

Legochaek will be far from the only one to react like this, at the right pricepoint, I could see this selling like hotcakes to people who don't even buy Lego for themselves regularly.

People forget Twilight was a global phenomenon for a certain age bracket at a certain time. They still occasionally roll out the movies in the cinema for boozy watch parties. That demographic has spending power.

..now back to get work on my Mamma Mia ABBA IDEA set  :pir_laugh2:

As always with these 'what were they thinking' type of product announcements, it's going to be non-Lego fans of the IP who are the target demographic, while most AFOLs sit there scratching their heads. I'll agree that Twilight sits at a weird place, it's too far out of the zeitgeist now to command the consumer might of BTS fans, but not old enough to capture the nostalgia market of sets like Home Alone.

LEGO IDEAS Blacksmith was succesful, so probably influenced the Sanderson House decision , despite being an IP, and with this Twilight House, they might try to appeal to the architectural style of the build as well to a wider group of customers (part of which might think the €200 Friends mansion is still too colorful/toyish/girlish whatever, or just won't buy it because "minidolls" are in it.)

Yep, if there is a Lego fan demographic this set is designed for, it'll most likely be architecture fans.

To be honest seeing the skepticism toward the Twilight set from established AFOL communities makes me feel more like it was a smart choice on Lego's part. If established buyers aren't as interested in it yet it managed to get full support on Ideas, that suggests to me that it stands a good chance of bringing new fans into the fold.

I'm mostly indifferent to the Twilight series so have no real interest in this set, but I do appreciate as religious as Stephanie Meyer is she has the good sense to keep her politics largely to herself and not use her platform as a successful young-adult author to promote bigotry, unlike a certain other author who will not be named...

Absolutely agreed! Every time an unexpected project like this passes, so many people seem to forget that one of the explicitly stated goals of the Ideas program is to create new fans. I've never read the books or watched the movies, but some of my friends are fans and I'm happy that they're happy. Welcome to the Three Minifigure Club, Robert Pattinson!

I also did not expect the Botanical Garden because of the Friends one, but I suppose that will be retired by the time this one comes out. I've had 41757 on my wishlist for a while, but now I'm glad I held off because this gives a similar vibe but with room for way more detail. I'm especially intrigued because the submission appears to follow the modular format, so if that aspect is retained it would be the first Ideas modular!

Agreed on Twilight intending to bring in new fans. Same with BTS, and probably a bunch of main sets, like the Tall Neck, some of the real world objects, and Animal Crossing.

The botanical garden is interesting. Is it a modular because of the connection points, or would it be a modular if it had layers you could remove and add more?

Because noone created one?

Anyways, I am actually surprised it comes that early in the year - would have expected some time between that one and the MTS. I hope it looks as good as the fandesigner one.

Yeah, Twilight project was pretty random. From last review, I've expected four sets to be chosen:
-Toa Head Statue, because of the four series that led in the voting on the occasion of LEGO's ninetieth anniversary, even though Bionicle took first place, only this series of the four finalists did not receive a specific anniversary set, so fans deserved for such compensation.
-Naruto: Ichiraku Ramen Shop, because it is probably the most popular anime in the world, which was broadcasted on many Western and European channels, and this production is relatively not so violent (compared to for example Indiana Jones with melting faces etc.), so it would probably not be against LEGO's policy
-Welcome to Narnia, because we have anniversry and it was confirmed that we'll get another adaptation
-Shrek's Swamp. Do I need to explain, why? :)

Actually, I was sure that this year LEGO will announce first LEGO Ideas project which I will be willing to buy, but it seems that I'll have to wait a bit longer... I really don't get why LEGO is always refusing to choose sets which would mean a sure profit on a large scale and instead choose things that are completely niche.

What are your favourites for the thired review of 2023?

To me, just Forest Base, but that's not going to happen with Forest Stronghold being in the Bricklink Program.

I would love the Wreck-It-Ralph set, I love that movie.

Also the IKEA store (my house is full of IKEA stuff :)

I actually don´t think that the BDP has that much influence on what Lego would do as a Set and what not.

Another wave where nothing interests me that much - most likely Set I would think could get through are A-Team or Simpsons. But usually Lego does surprise me and takes something I wouldn´t have thought they would choose lol.

I'm a big fan of the 'Canal Lock', but I can't see Lego picking it up.

Honestly I can't see many of these being what Lego are looking for. Maybe the jukebox?

Is it possible to have a review with zero sets being converted?

Maybe, but in this case, https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-3/1127/Forest-Stronghold is up for crowdfunding later in the year, and while this Ideas submission looks somewhat different as it's more brown, and wood, compared to Stronghold and Castle in the Forest, it's still pretty much the same subject material, as in a main location for Forestmen faction.

Then again, with IDEAS, LEGO can still decide to change the final design, while with BDP, not really. As we see with Viking Village, got a lot of new prints.

Well, I don´t think we would get that set eitherway. I mean, there have been enough sets like that already and none was accepted and I do have the feeling if Lego wants to do a Forestmen Set it would rather be an Set like Lion Knight´s Castle and Medieval Town Square, rather than an Ideas set.

True, it's not really an "IDEA" at this point, with LEGO having brought back the parts, prints etc.

I mean, for Barracuda Bay, it was quite some years since 2015 already, and there was no substantially sized Pirate island set since the 90s, and the 2-in-1 redesign likely helped.

Vikings had the ship going for it, and a Viking Village itself was never done in such a way + it was a Vote.

Also BDP has another Castle coming up for crowdfunding next month, with https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/482/Mountain-Fortress,  so between that,  the upcoming Medieval Market, Forest Stronghold and Lion Knights, I think Castle is in a good place for the 3 current factions.

I think the Vikings Set had two advantages. On one side, unlike Pirates, Space and Castle, Lego wasn´t planning to bring it back aside from the one creator set - and the second might be - but that is just a guess - that target might have something to say when they chose which set they are setting for vote and which one gets choosen in the end.
