I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle minifigures for The Office. It's a show which really relied on a large ensemble cast, and I can't see Lego putting in ten or more minifigures.

Wouldn't surprise me if we get the absolute main characters - Jim, Pam, Dwight, Michael, maybe Ryan - and the others have to be mocced.

Which ones have they picked so far that were surprising?

This time, The Office. They keep turning it down and this time reward a very similar design to the past rejected ones. I bet past designers are annoyed!

And in the past I was quite surprised at the following:

The Big Bang Theory - as this was the first time they went for a sitcom set that was fairly adult in nature. I thought it was shocking at the time, but now don't see it as a barrier to being selected.

Doctor Who - as it was quite region specific.

Maze - it was the first real world type stick-it-on-a-shelf object, and also a game (after LEGO dumped the games range) and not as good as a real maze yet 10x more expensive.

Adventure time - non-minifigure based set with limited appeal.

Ship in a Bottle - it may be a ship in a bottle, but it isn't a very good ship in a bottle that gets built around it so no skill like in a real ship in a bottle.

TRON (and Wall-E) - if they wanted to do this movie, why didn't they just do it like other Disney (and Warner) movies before it. They already had agreements with the licensee.

I think they will have more than that, if not only because all of the more diverse characters would be missed out by a very small minifig roster.

so I would assume more like 8-10 … It’s not like they need new head moulds!

Now hopefully the Bricklink Designer Program can rescue some of the non-licensed projects like the Castles.

I love the 3-in-1 Castle for sure, fantastic set, but it's the figures/accesoires/horses that are lacking to support those big sets.

Barracuda Bay had a bit less of that issue as it came with a much bigger lineup of figs.

Don't forget though that Doctor Who, during the Matt Smith era at least, was at its peak in worldwide popularity - and while that did decline with Capaldi, it didn't immediately drop overnight. I suspect there's a reason they put a Matt Smith minifigure in there, but it was still popular and tbh I reckon it was a popular enough licence at the time to sustain a full theme.

True. So probably adding in Oscar, Andy, Kelly, Meredith, Kevin - honestly at that point they might just as well bump it to eleven and make the whole set. So maybe we will get them all!

The real question is what do all the bad faith critics of <insert set featuring diversity> claim they *just want* now if they make an Office set ?! 😂

They will need to add in Stanley or they will be accused of being anti-black. And Phyllis and Angela to get the female to male ratio as high as possible. By that time they couldn't miss out Creed. And then Darryl from the warehouse. ... whatever they do they are going to miss out some characters.

I'd be interested in the snowwhite if it's the original version,  not a Licensed Disney-Fied version.

The snow white story is over 200 years old,  and was published more then 110 years before Walt Disney was even Born.

In that case, you are unfortunately going to be disappointed.

Very predictable. These are the exact same sets I wanted to put down at their guessing game but ultimately chickened out and only put Jazz Quartet.

Given the shape of the house, the placement of the chimney, the windows, the door, even the external timbers, I think it is pretty clear the designer wanted this to be the Disney version.

Concerning the number of minifigures in The Office - I reckon they are going to go large with it and produce an IDEAS set with the largest number of minifigures ever (and what a good press release for it right there). They selected the bigger submission out of the two in the review panel. If they were going to go small and just do 4-5 figures, they would have selected the smaller version.

Very excited for the The Office set!!

So how much time is there usually between the announcement and the actual set being made?

Comparing other IDEAS Sitcom sets:

  • The Big Bang Theory was Approved 07 November 2014 , released as a set 01 August 2015
  • Central Perk was Approved 18 February 2019 , released as a set 01 September 2019
  • Seinfeld was Approved  23 June 2020 and released as a set 01 August 2021

I don't think this would release before at the very least second half of 2022, if not 2023.

Currently there are 5 ideas yet to release, 1 for 2021 (Home Alone) , and 4 others for 2022 (Sonic, Van Gogh Starry Night, Earth Globe, Motorized Lighthouse)

On the positive side for The Office, there is probably not much that needs designing. They probably don't even need to do much work on the minifigure designs as they have a number of suits and office type clothes already. A few decorated tiles to brighten up the walls with notes and posters and they are done.

The thing with the Office set is I wonder how the designers will increase the sets interesting features / complexity.  Most Lego sets, I wouldn't even know where to begin if you gave me a picture and all the pieces.  However with the approved Office submission, I think you could give me a picture or two and all the pieces and I would be done and ready for the next thing within a few hours.

Actually think they *should* concentrate on including more of the POC and female characters as much as possible. Given the setting, it’s not *that hard* to cobble together some generic white men in office clothes from existing minifigure parts; but it’s a lot more difficult to find suitable parts for the POC/female characters as they’re so limited proportionately across sets in ‘flesh’ tones.

Man I wish they would just make sitcom sets themselves so we don’t need to waste time with Ideas spamming every sitcom people think can get approved

That and the quote from the builder's submission:

"Hey friends! I decided to take a second swing at my Seven Dwarfs' House. Though, this time I thought I would stay true to the original version from the 1937 animated Disney Classic.

The colours and facade, as well as interiors have been given an overhaul. There are also some other structural changes.

This is my homage to the first ever full-length animated feature, and the Dwarfs' feel missed in the LEGO catalogue!"

First it was the NASA/space sets that were clogging up Lego Ideas, now it’s sitcom sets! I still think both should be relegated to their own themes. Sort of like how Lego seems to be doing mulitple things under the umbrella of this new “Gaming” theme, Lego Television or Lego Space would do fantastic.

That being said, I’m excited that we’re finally getting The Office, though I would’ve been more excited if it came out a couple years ago when I was a bigger fan of the show.

The simple answer is that this time they finally obtained the rights. It's certainly not an inspired choice but I'm sure it'll bring revenue.

The jazz quartet is a pleasant surprise. I think Tutankhamun would have been a good set. I have a soft spot for Totoro. Bit of a shame I think that the Bentley and Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang were rejected. The rest of the models, while nice, were neither here nor there as a good Ideas projects.
