Wesley D Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 2 upcoming Ideas sets seem to be really big. It makes me wonder if the lighthouse will be minifigure scale. The other has to be the table soccer? Quote

Legochaek Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Well, that was disappointing. Wonder why B-99 didn’t make it Quote
BrickMonkeyMOCs Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 I'm astounded that the JWST didn't make it through. That should have been a slam dunk at the moment. The SR-71 and Soyuz would also have had broad appeal. I think LEGO really need to look at raising the bar for making it to review, as a rejection rate of 97% even after getting the requisite votes seems like it will lead to far more disappointment and frustration than joy for both fans and fan designers alike. The JWST is in the limelight right now, and I would've loved to see it but I don't think the appearance of the telescope is recognizable enough yet to carry a popular set. SR-71 would've gotten Lego in the same hot water as the cancelled Technic Osprey, and the Soyuz was Dead on Arrival the moment Russia became an international aggressor earlier this year. Quote
kodlovag Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 It is interesting, that TLG launched a vote at May to select an extra idea, because they have an extra slot. Now, they approved only one idea, however there are usually approve 2. Why not selected 2 ideas from this wave? Did they already know at that time, that only one wil be selected from this wave? On the other hand, I could understand the decision. Because, to be honest, I would disapprove all of the entries. I considered about 8 ideas as possible future sets, but all of them had cons, why not to approve. And we got Hocus Pocus. It was not even on my list. Probably it is my fault, but I don't even know, what is it. Therefor it is an easy skip for me. But now I am happy with the Anniversary Castle, and hope for the extra Viking Village. Question: is IP a boosting factor for sales, because the fans will buy it; or a limiting factor, because only the fans will buy it? perhaps, it is only about how to select the right IP... Quote

I think that IP is useful for LEGO because it brings in fans on the IP who are not into LEGO, so it's a good way to expand their customer base. Central Perk appeared to do this very well. Quote
jonwil Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 You can tell why most of these failed. LEGO either can't or won't do Zelda so the Hyrule Castle is out. The Terrariums and Orchid are too similar to the existing plant sets so those are out. LEGO either can't or won't do Avatar so the Last Airbender set is out. The Dojo and Naruto sets are too similar to what LEGO do with Monkie Kid and Ninjago so those are out. JWST just isn't recognizable enough as an object (the JWST isn't in the news right now, the photos taken with it are what's in the news) No way Spin Master would give LEGO a license for the Rubix Cube. Castle Outpost is way too similar to all the other Castle stuff they have done recently. Same with the Riverside Scholars (it clearly fits into the general genere of "castle") LEGO doesn't do normal buildings as Ideas sets so Downtown Records and The Meeting Point are out. Soyuz is Russian so that's out given what's going on. Pirate Tavern is too similar to Barracuda Bay. Stargate is too close to "modern military" McDonalds is too closely associated with childhood obesity (and hence too controversial) The SR-71 is basically a spy plane which is just as "military" as the Osprey was so that's out The garden and greenhouse is too big and also too similar to the things LEGO put into the City Farm sets. I haven't seen any episodes of Brooklyn Nine Nine but going off the tags attached to the rating for the show (mature themes, drug use, sexual references) it would appear to be too mature for LEGO. None of the other IPs are popular enough in 2022 to work (Johnny 5, Ghibli, Asterix, Gremlins, Its a Wonderful Life). LEGO doesn't do trains as Ideas sets so the steam train is out Baba Yaga seems to be based on a story that just isn't well known in most of the world. Bookends have come up a few times and I suspect there just aren't enough people who are into LEGO and into books and would buy (and use) LEGO bookends. The only reason Hocus Pocus is getting made is that it happens to tie into new content that Disney thinks will be popular enough for a tie-in LEGO set to sell. I am surprised that we haven't seen any kind of cowboy/Western stuff from LEGO in a long time, surely cowboys are still popular in 2022 and a set featuring cowboys would sell... Or have cowboys no longer "kid appropriate" these days thanks to the PC brigade or something? Quote

Probably more likely to do with this. B-99 has pretty much the same mature themes as TBBT and Friends. Quote

To be fair, LEGO has been consistently releasing sitcom kinda sets on the shelves at the same time - TBBT, Seinfeld, Friends, etc., so I don't know that this is the full reason. It may honestly just be an issue of license. It can't really be a content issue, as it's the same content-wise as TBBT or Friends as far as any sexual references, etc. LEGO also did turn down the office multiple times before accepting it, so it may just be a "not right now" situation too. Sounds like the creator is going to reupload the B-99 set to see if they can bring it up on the review a second time. Quote

Take the minifigures away, and that B99 set could be anything. Quote

Fair, though I would say that The Office will be a relatively generic build as well - only recognizable from the fact of the layout being like the show (like B-99 would be). Quote
TeriXeri Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 (edited) Currently listed retirement dates for Seinfeld, Queer Eye, and Central Perk will be December 2022, that'll be 3 tv show sets out of 4 current sets retiring. Then there's the 10292: The Friends Apartments , with a TBA exit date and The Office at some point. Edited July 13, 2022 by TeriXeri Quote

The list had a few missed, but was also the easy reasons why most were rejected, not all. I suspect the emergency brick separator was rejected because it's a LEGO in-joke. Fun for those that are fans of LEGO, but probably not to the casual fan, and certainly not going attract anyone new to LEGO. LEGO is playful and likes humor in sets, but probably not humor about LEGO as the main point. That's better hidden away as an Easter egg in a set that stands on it's own. I was most disappointed that Land Ahoy didn't make it. That would probably attract non-LEGO people, as it looks beautiful and you would think it was LEGO. However, I suspect it would be too hard to make it structurally robust and remain as elegant. Quote

RichardGoring Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 The Office 21336 had been revealed. https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/the-office-21336 While I'm not surprised, I was hopeful that they'd do something more interesting with it. It's a pretty boring looking build, without any of the funky angles from the other sitcom sets. Maybe some interesting techniques in the furniture, but most likely it's the minifigs that will get people excited. Quote

I think anything associated with Studio Ghibli would be easily popular enough to sell well as it has broad appeal outside of just the Western/English speaking market. Possibly it's a licensing issue, personally I feel if a Ghibli model were to be produced it would be better to focus on just the one movie, instead of the multiple miniatures in the Ideas submission. Spirited Away would be the most likely choice, but a set of the Bath House from that movie would probably be seen by TLG as having too many similarities with the Ninjago line. Quote
jonwil Posted July 16, 2022 Posted July 16, 2022 It wouldn't surprise me if Anime licensing in general is seen as being too similar to what they do with Ninjago and Monkie Kid to make sense to produce. That said, a Spirited Away Bath House would be amazing. Quote
