If I recall Dr. Who was the fastest at roughly 2 1/2 days, wasn't it?

I don't remember Doctor Who being that fast... unless, are you talking about GlenBricker's project?  I don't remember either way

As somebody pointed out on Facebook, if LEGO make the Red Arrows set people will buy nine of them at a time. They'd make a fortune.

That will be me then :classic:

I think that's overstating things a bit. Certainly SOME people might get nine, but I think most people would be content with one (especially considering how much space it'd take to display all nine of them at once). It's always worth remembering that the kinds of hardcore fans who get multiples of specific sets just to "army build" are a small minority of buyers.

This is a great model but I do hope that if it gets produced as a set they find an effective way to do away with those STAMPs while still maintaining the look of the decorated surfaces.

If they use http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=30249 for the tail, that would solve a big part of the STAMP problem (not sure what the Ideas submission uses for the tail)

Also there may be issues for TLG in using the emblem of an actual active current military unit (RAF in this case) even if its not on a military plane (have they ever done that before?)

True. There are many loyal fans of the Red Arrows who wouldn't feel it right to only have one Red Arrow on display though.

Sometimes compression works wonders. Many of the model kits of the various flight teams from the 70's and 80's achieved the desired look just using 3 or 4 planes well posed.

It could be more impressive to have 9.  You can suspend them from your ceiling if shelf space is lacking.  Also save some wear and tear on the ball joints in the landing gear.

I think it was that fast. I didn't know anything about DW at that time, but I remember as soon as Lego made that specific "we allow DW projects now" rule, the whole community went nuts. Didn't two different TARDIS models get approved within like a day or two of each other?

Not sure how that plane fits in with the whole "no modern day war stuff" (my words, TLG's sentiments) thing, even if it's just for stunts, it has air force markings on it. Is it the same or different story as the sopwith camels?

This is a bit off topic, but I just realized that the Iron Giant has a really good chance of passing the review. They passed the fishing store, which shows they're open for making larger sets. The Iron Giant is a Warner Bros. property, in which LEGO and Warner Bros. have a very good relationship with each other.

Hopefully they'll allow it because the Red Arrows are more associated with aerobatic displays than warfare.

I just checked and TLG has released a surprising number of modern jet-fighter type airplanes. Usually called "racer" or something like that instead of "fighter", so it seems not that unlikely to me that they would do a red arrow as well. And with their licensed-sets there seems to be much more possible as well.

The Sopwith Camel I can understand from a different point of view though. Its an airplane from an utterly different era than anything that is in the skies today. So there is no real connection to any current real-life designs. Its to me more like having a pirates theme with all the muskets and cannons. Yes, they are weapons, but in no way like the stuff that is used today.

In general though I think the trend for TLG goes to be more lenient with these things as they were some 15 or so years ago.Always touching their self-imposed limits, but I don't expect them to make dedicated modern military sets anytime soon thankfully.

Was going to say that it's been 3 weeks since the last blog post. And it's March in a few hours time, so I'm getting a bit itchy for news!

They filmed the results video today. They posted a pic on facebook

The blue power jet was basically an F-35...

Ack, really?  They said they were doing that two or three weeks ago!  So that they could get the results up by the end of the month.  I hope this doesn't mean we've got to wait a couple more weeks for post production.

I hope they chose the Merchant House, it seemed like the only viable one in the batch.

I'm always going to throw out Voltron.  I think it could work really well.

EDIT:  Clarification - on the LEGO Ideas FB Page, they posted a picture today (27 Feb) from them filming "recently."  So, filming wasn't completed just today.

Did it have military insignia on it?

No, but one can easily see the body shape is inspired by it.

Which means there is precedent for the red arrows.
