pmptstc1 Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 As far as the super hero sets, I mostly forgo the Lego ones in favor of just the bootleg figures. I'm really not interested in vehicles, and that is almost all you get in super hero sets... except for the really big sets, and those are just too expensive. I still buy Lego medieval sets and random small stuff, like Mixels. I'm also really looking forward to that ant man set.
kid Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 (edited) Who is the Decool figure #215? (Between Bizzaro and the Green Arrow) I also buy the logo sets. I even splurged for the Hellicarrier. I use the bootlegs for the custom figures, the impossible to get exclusives, and to give to my kids : ) Edited May 9, 2015 by kid
wickedlemon Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 How many on this thread just collect figures via the bootleggers and are then happy to give the genuine Lego sets a miss? I'm just interested how many, if any, just get these sets? I know there are people who just keep those that aren't released by Lego and maybe some of the harder to get figures or even those that are just in expensive sets. Just interested that's all... I collect all the SY and Decool figures, whether they're original or not. But my OCD tells me I have to get them all! Oddly enough, I would say I've bought more genuine Lego since collecting bootlegs than I would have otherwise, although a lot of sets are just out of my price range.
jangosolo Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Well, I've cancelled Dargo! That decool lineup looks great, and I'm willing to wait for the likes of Maria Hill, scarlet witch with a double printed face and Vision

Sebiron Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 or agent hill Ha yes you re right! I didnt know there is already a Lego version ^^,

I know there are people who just keep those that aren't released by Lego and maybe some of the harder to get figures or even those that are just in expensive sets. Just interested that's all... Those DLP Iron Man figs look really good... It'll be nice to expand the Hall of Armour with at least one new suit and maybe some upgrades. I collect original LEGO, I also build my own customs for characters not present and I buy figures that are custom printed LEGO to fill some gaps... However, there are still massive gaps that cant be filled in this fashion. The additonal Ironman Armours are a great example. Then the bigfigs, their Groot is brilliant and fits in much better with the original LEGO team than the brick built. The Rhino is also a perfect example of a character that we got screwed with by LEGO with their brick built mech. The Hulkbuster is also really kool, more in scale with the bigfig universe than our brick built freind again. Finally, Venom and Juggernaught, the Fantastic Four, original comic style Hawkeye, Silver Surfer and Galactus, figs that were needed but not released.... They make a huge difference in my collection and will get replaced when originals become available to me, but until then.... These are great!
wilson3a10 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 It seems the tank (?) is a recolour of the mark 17. Great, that would be easy.

Those DLP Iron Man figs look really good... It'll be nice to expand the Hall of Armour with at least one new suit and maybe some upgrades. For me, it's simple: my priority is minifigs above all else. In fact, I was a MARVEL fan long before my son re-introduced me to LEGO, thus my priority is to try and "assemble" the most complete MARVEL universe I can. This is also the reason I got involved in making MOCs (for the simple reason that there have been a number of characters not produced by anyone -- e.g. much of the Sinister Six for example) -- it is also the reason I decided to create (and release) my first official fig (Techno Girl). More to the point though, I should say that I support LEGO with plenty of my hard earned cash -- for example sets such as the Quinjet Chase or Hulkbuster or Iron Man v. Ultron -- it just makes sense to get the sets than getting figs a la carte. My son enjoys these sets immensely. I take the figs (but I do supplement those sets with bootleg purchases for him -- more on that later). To answer your question more directly: my purchase habit of LEGO is not affected by the existence of bootlegs nor my purchase habit of bootlegs -- not even an iota. The only extreme exception are the SDCC exclusive figs -- and even then it's not like I can go directly to LEGO and "purchase" them -- my (and our) options are simple -- you are at the mercy of scalpers and the second hand market (those of you who have seen my thread on the exclusives are well aware of my stance on this issue). This is when I will gladly hand over a few bucks to grab a Decool or SY version (or when a customizer such as Phoenix produces an even better variant than the original) which in turn helps to undercut the ridiculous secondary market pricing for SDCCs. As an aside, the latest Electro polybag is a perfect example. It was a TRU exclusive with a very limited US release which ended up effectively disappearing for a few months. The scalpers went right into action and this was trading at a preposterous $200 price level on eBay. And lo and behold, LEGO has recently decided to re-release them again via TRU for purchase for $4 bucks. Good on them. Heck, I would much rather buy the real thing over the bootlegs -- and when there is an option I do (almost 100% of the time). Again, the Electro example is an apt one because I bought the Decool set with the Electro polybag variant a few weeks ago -- it is sitting in my display case with my other Spidey villains. But when the real thing popped up for purchase via TRU recently, I snapped one up immediately -- it is en route to me as we speak, and when it arrives it will replace the Decool version (which I will give to my son) -- i.e. my bootleg purchase did not affect my decision to get the real thing. As for bootlegs generally, I love giving bunches of them to my son. It's a win/win because he can destroy them, lose them, swap them up -- I couldn't be bothered. And bootlegs do serve another purpose and that is when they come up with their own unique variants (such as Odin or the latest Magento or Iron Man marks) those are very well received indeed. I'm a collector. And more and more a fairly serious one. But I am not a collector of LEGO sets per se. I get them when they help me serve my overall goal, which is to expand my MARVEL universe. And as a by-product of this goal (and the fact that TLG retains the MARVEL license), over the years I have left a fairly hefty sum of money upon LEGO's doorstep indeed -- and the proof is in the pudding, aside from a few SDCC variants (and even for those I have a replacement variant) -- I have every single MARVEL figure that LEGO has released to date. Robianco Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 I'd say that the bootleg figures has actually got me buying custom figures more frequently... Or at least made more of a collector out of me. I've even picked up pad printed customs to replace bootleg figures such as the FF and some Spidey figs. My SY sets with Jean Grey etc arrived yesterday and I'm really happy with the quality... But there's also an example of why I go for pad printed customs as the Black Bolt is good... But compared next to the NACM with its silver ink and arm printing it's clearly inferior (albeit much cheaper). The SY 2011 SDCC Bats is absolutely perfect though... I see no reason to pay £150 for a genuine one which would look identical. There are some great figures being produced by bootleggers that I wouldn't want to have missed. I still have a slight smile when I hear people pleading for certain figures on the SH threads when there are perfect customs of those figures available... I just hope SY look at Spiderwoman soon!
Adnan Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) To answer your question more directly: my purchase habit of LEGO is not affected by the existence of bootlegs nor my purchase habit of bootlegs -- not even an iota. For me I started collecting genuine Star Wars/minifig series/Lego movie minifigs. I was able to buy all the characters I wanted through Bricklink and a few sets at a reasonable price. Even though I'm a huge fan of Marvel and DC, I couldn't afford to buy every minifig they released and my OCD would crave for them all! When I discovered bootlegs I began building my Marvel/DC universe. So I can't say the existence of bootlegs have changed my purchase habit of Lego because I still buy genuine SW gifs and sets and the minifig series. If anything I have started buying more genuine Lego as cheaper Marvel or DC figs find themselves in my Bricklink orders that go on to replace the bootlegs. EDIT: Also, recently I have been buying a lot more Lego parts to paint MOCs (completely inspired by agoodfella77, thanks!) to fill in the gaps of my Marvel/DC universe. Edited May 10, 2015 by Adnan

Sebiron Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 How many on this thread just collect figures via the bootleggers and are then happy to give the genuine Lego sets a miss? Yes, almost 100% of my collection is bootleg stuff.
wilson3a10 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) Vehicles like quinjet, hulkbuster, the bat etc are great so I buy sets and store the genuine minifig in a good place while I purchase bootlegs fig for playing and open space displaying. I don't buy bootleg sets because most of us buy bootlegs for minifigs. If the bootlegs manufacturers think it is profitable to just directly copy the whole set, they won't sell minifig individually and we may end up paying a higher price for bootleg minifigs included in a set. Edited May 10, 2015 by wilson3a10
Robianco Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) Yeah... I buy the sets I like and BL the rest of the figures. I've also B&P'd some figs where possible. I don't have any figs in my collection that aren't genuine if a genuine one is available (except for those pesky SDCC but we're all the same with those)... but I still buy a lot of Lego sets. I'm still not impressed by the bootleggers brick quality though. The canon builds from the Magneto, Black Bolt etc sets are horrible builds and I just don't like how the bricks connect... They're still way off in my opinion. That said... There's a couple of interesting pieces in the Dr Doom canon. Firstly a light bley plate for a 2x2 turntable which I've found are quite hard to come by... And secondly (and quite the biggy IMHO) is the light bley levers that are commonly black in a variety of base colours. If anyone has ever looked into BLing a 10179 Falcon you'll find that these are £1.25 each at the cheapest... And you get 3 in the set. Stick them into official light bley 1x1 bases and they're perfect. Shame we only get three but if they make it into other sets they're definitely worth looking out for... Especially as I'm considering the 10179 build. The Decool figs might come in handy for some double sided heads but it's a shame there's nothing unique in there or even rare... Except for Bizarro... So that head might be useful to go with an SY torso. The Winter Soldier will be good for Robin or Nightwing customs and it looks like they've moulded Widow's hair... So the new SY fig would be perfect with that. I just hope they're better quality than the last wave with Bane and The Collector as I thought they were quite poor. Edited May 10, 2015 by Robianco

I know there are people who just keep those that aren't released by Lego and maybe some of the harder to get figures or even those that are just in expensive sets. Just interested that's all... Bit late to this one, but... I still buy Lego Sets for the fun of the build, and the rarer figures, Bootlegs are great too as I have been able to farm them out to my kids while hiding Official ones in my own collection! In some cases I have been happier with the bootleg versions, some I have replaced with Customs (e.g Phoenix Customs - nobody yet has done a Captain America or Gambit like he does or Onlinesailin's Nightwing). And of course I am never going to have a real SDCC figure, it just doesn't make any finanical sense at all! We rarely keep the sets due to space restrictions and the fact that for some reason once its built the kids lose interest, so I am always turning round sets so I can get something else. I have bought most of the Cuusoo (Ideas) sets, but then Bootlegs has enabled me to get Rocket's Ravager (meh) and the impossible to buy 7881 Batmobile (awesome). Most of all its enabled me to fill my collection with great characters existing (made by Lego) or new (not made by Lego) incredibly cheaply, which for me is a real help, because I may have found myself bankrupt if this collection was all 100% real thanks to the after market, which although is frustrating I understand, its a sellers market when certain figures come only in big price sets - I both benefit and suffer from this. Bootlegging has made it much easier. In addition, this thread has certainly opened my eyes to the greater customisation world, a year ago I had never even thought of doing a custom figure, now I can not only cheaply source parts, but have discovered a whole community to be inspired by and share with - pretty cool. I'm still not impressed by the bootleggers brick quality though. The canon builds from the Magneto, Black Bolt etc sets are horrible builds and I just don't like how the bricks connect... They're still way off in my opinion. Yep, the bricks are generally horrible, colours are still not right either - let alone the clutch

Kire Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Ahhh that reminds me I still have yet to purchase 7881. I buy sets every now and then. The main problem and reason I am not buying the avengers wave is the new figures that aren't variants are all in the higher priced sets. No this isn't a coincidence I know its Lego that decided this. Compared to this summers Lego wave of Antman and the two reasonably priced spiderman sets I will purchase those.
Tyberious Funk Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 How many on this thread just collect figures via the bootleggers and are then happy to give the genuine Lego sets a miss? I'm just interested how many, if any, just get these sets? I've posted this in a previous thread, but I'll repeat it here... Lego in Australia is expensive, and often difficult to find (unless your interest is limited to mostly mainstream stuff). And to compound the issue, a lot of online retailers will actively geoblock Australians from purchasing Lego, so that's not an avenue for us. Even when it's possible to buy Lego online, the cost of shipping typically outweighs the potential cost savings. And the whole issue is compounded even further when the Aussie dollar isn't doing so well (like now). Dedicated AFOL are always keeping track of local retailers to keep an eye on products in stock, and taking note of any sales. So there are two issues for me. Firstly, I have plenty of other expensive hobbies, so I'm not inclined to blow a lot of cash on Lego (no matter how much I might appreciate some of the sets). And secondly, I just don't have the time to be a dedicated bargain hunter like some of my fellow Australians. So I typically limit myself to the smaller, cheaper sets (say, sub $20). The beauty of the bootleg stuff is that I can buy sets of minifigs (which I love) at a cost that is typically less than A$2 per figure, delivered. And the only "bargain hunting" I have to do, is a quick search on AliExpress. The "purest" in me doesn't like bootleg stuff. But the "realist" side of me sees the practical benefits. And I've started to replace a few dodgy parts from some of my bootlegs, with some genuine lego parts. So the line between bootleg and lego is getting blurry.

It'll be nice to expand the Hall of Armour with at least one new suit and maybe some upgrades. most of my figs are genuine lego, at least the figs they produced and that i want (not the sdcc ones of course). I'm not really a mcu fan (though i like the movies, i just like comics better. Especially the old ones) so i don't need those sets. I do like to have some of them, in that case bootleg will suffice. For instance Vision or Baron von Strucker, i dont know if there ever is going to be a comic version of, so i want them as placeholders. I used to buy a lot of sw sets, but because of rehashes and also lack of space i got more and more into minifigs. Then the sw figs became a little overdesigned for my liking, and my interest shifted completely to marvel superheroes. But sh sets are not really that great builds most of the time, so sometimes bootlegs are definitely a solution to me. I know i can just bricklink the real figures, but somehow i won't do it. Furthermore i must say that i'm getting more and more interested in custom figs. Still didnt make the step to buy one. Nowadays i get more excited about new bootlegs than most official sets. Robianco Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Well I think we all get pretty excited with upcoming releases... If SY started to expand their range into new SW figures I think I'd flip! I could just see them doing a Cantina range with Luke, Ben and Han as clones of existing figures then having Dr Evazan, Ponda Baba and Wuher as customs. Can you imagine the SW part of the forum if they produced those?!

Heh, last night I noted that all 60 odd of my displayed Star Wars figures were originals, no bootlegs - I would be pretty excited if the bootleggers (or Lego for that matter) produced some of the more obscure characters! I have been very underwhelmed by all of the LOTR and SW bootlegs. Having said all that, the bootleggers don't generally seem to want to produce non Lego produced figures on the whole, just existing - and even worse at times the ones that have already been done by a rival company!! But when they do, its very exciting - wish they'd do more - I love the likes of FF, Punisher, Hawkeye, Galactus and the big Figs etc Obviously they when they do go off the Lego produced tracks, then I suppose they rely on pinching other peoples designs - I am less aware of Star Wars customs than Super Hero - must look into that...
Adnan Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Here's a closer look at the Dargo Avengers set for those who bought it. Sorry if the images are too big, I'm not sure how to change the size.
