The Middleman Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 I'm almost finished sorting my 40,000+ piece collection by color. After this, I'm going to start sorting them by piece type (and put the minifigs/special pieces into their own categories). But, I'm not sure how to go about this - there are so many different ways they could be sorted! What do you guys think? Quote
xwingyoda Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Tough call there Bloody Jay I guess it depends on the space you have :-D I love those tool kits drawers things where you can really organise pieces. You could get one per colour and one for minifigs/special pieces. Bottom line, it should be convenient for you!!!!! (OK that doesn't say much, but it is really personal). Anyway, GOOD LUCK ;) and keep us informed Quote
The Middleman Posted March 10, 2005 Author Posted March 10, 2005 I'm thinking: - Plates - Tiles/grills - Printed small pieces - Bricks - Hinges/joints - Other - Technic (large) - Technic (small) For black/blue/gray/dark gray/white/red/yellow/tan/green/other (warm tones)/other (cold tones). Then, for clear colors: - Windshields - Windows - Dots (1x1 plates/tiles) - Tiles/grills - Other For minifigs/accessories: - Heads - Torsos - Legs - Hats/helmets - Back accessories - Weapons - Tools - Small animals (monkeys, parrots, baby t-rexes, etc) - Large animals/creatures (Jabba, dewback, t-rex, etc) - Non-minifig droids (R2-D2, palace droid, battle droids, etc) And: - Baseplates - Fabric/sails/tents Anything you can think of that I missed? Jipay Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 I will never sort my lego. First of all because I have far more than 30 000+ pieces and secondly because I like the feeling of searching the right little piece into a box. :') Quote
The Middleman Posted March 11, 2005 Author Posted March 11, 2005 Finding that one TIE pilot helmet or the one printed 1x2 tile does get tiring after a while, though. ;) I've left it unsorted until now, but with certain projects coming up, I have to prepare... :-D Quote
xwingyoda Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Here is what I did: for "normal" pieces: Sort every brick by color. For "special" pieces: I put in small plastic bags (the one you freeze food in) - minifigs sorted by theme (for SW sorting by ep1-3 and OT: empire, rebellion, droids, OT creatures) - special printed pieces (computers...) - food - money (bills, coins, jewels) - transparent bricks sorted by color - building pieces (doors, roof tiles) by color Like Jipay, I like to search for normal pieces but not special ones Good luck on your projects ;) Quote
jonfett Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 I plan to sort my all my loose Lego one day, but not too soon. Here are some pictures of how I have sorted parts of minfigs. Good luck with your sorting! :) Jon. Quote
Kaminoan Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Sort by BL standards. Just go through the BL catalog and look at how they break down the pieces and sort to which ever level of complication you need to go to. Jared Quote
xwingyoda Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Bloody Jay, Here is basic idea found on brickshelf: http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1172712 Quote
ImperialJohn Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 :oD My favorite subject :D Important advice first ! 1. Sort it so that it works for you! 2. Keep in mind why you are sorting! 3. Keep it simple! And then :$ I've asked the same question to others. They ALL do it their way! My way ;) Normal bricks/plates in colorboxes Standard bricks (like slopes and so on) in big boxes Some special elements in special boxes Other parts in bags and boxes. I've sorted out 100.000+ bricks this way :oo (But used some of them in MOC's after :$ ) BUT the moto must be: "Keep your bricks in MOC's = Less sorting ;) " Quote
Wolf04 Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I sorted all the bricks by colour and since I didn't have a lot of other special pieces, I put them all together. Quote
Darth_Ewok Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I will never sort my lego. First of all because I have far more than 30 000+ pieces and secondly because I like the feeling of searching the right little piece into a box. :') Same here! its more fun that way! Quote
ImperialJohn Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Important advice first ! 1. Sort it so that it works for you! 2. Keep in mind why you are sorting! 3. Keep it simple! I forgot 4. Make sure that what you are sorting into is big enough to hold the bricks you have today and in the future *wacko* Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 5, 2005 Governor Posted April 5, 2005 Oh this thread is only so people can brag how many pieces they have... :-D Quote
ImperialJohn Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Oh this thread is only so people can brag how many pieces they have... No. If it was I would have written something about the 40.000+ pieces from SW sets sorted in sets ;) Sorting is personal *wub* Some do it, some don't. I like to know what I have and that mean sorting |-D Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 5, 2005 Governor Posted April 5, 2005 I was only kiddin! I wonder how much Lego I've got... I wouldn't have a clue where to begin counting... Quote
ImperialJohn Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 I wouldn't have a clue where to begin counting... I do ;) 1. Take ALL your loose LEGO. Put them on the floor 2. Take ALL your build sets. Take them apart. And put the loose parts in the pile. 3. Take ALL your MOC's. Take them apart. And put the loose parts in the pile. 4. Now scan the room for more LEGO ;) And start counting. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 (You might consider sorting them while doing so) Quote
ImperialJohn Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 As I said: "Every man his system" :-D Is this in a bag or a box? Or just lying on the floor? *wacko* Quote
xwingyoda Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 No thats me. :PErik We now know who you are Batman :-D Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 7, 2005 Governor Posted April 7, 2005 Oh dear! There goes lunch... Quote
