mccoyed Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 I figured you'd point out the lack of realism! But yeah, I did a lot of research on ships and read all your comments (and others over in the Pirates forum) to that effect. Ultimately I got swept up building it and had limited time, so I had to abandon a few ideas. Most particularly, I couldn't get the sloped sides right and ended up framing over it to give the upper deck a more rectangular appearance. It's a really oversized ship, I think, so I'm likely to do a redesign. If you have time, please have a look at the Flickr. If you don't mind getting into some detail when time permits, I'd love to hear your thoughts on places I could improve. I am most proud of the rigging, interior, the flag idea, and the use of "tree" arches for the lower stern leading up to the captain's cabin. I'm also proud of my 'figs. I think they're one of my strong points in general. :P Quote
Gideon Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Very nice ship! My favorite part is the busy deck Quote
Gabe Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Thanks for all the tips, Gabe. I live in awe of your ships! And I understand about the DOP although I don't know if 2 +1's overrules your pass? Is it majority? I actually think I'd defer it either way until I can make something with better windows. I still have a lot to learn. <snip> UoP votes work this way: If you get 4 votes in favour you pass, but if you get 3 vetos, even if you already have 4 votes in favour already, then you must try again for that credit. Hope that helps! I see that you only have 3 votes in total so far on this - if you like i'll go through the UoP rego thread and try to jog some ppl into getting this properly assessed, unless you want to withdraw for that credit and try again as you mention above? mccoyed Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I think I'll hold off until I can make something more impressive. Quote
MKJoshA Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Your minifigures and their backstories are indeed a selling point of this build. I love how much thought and detail you've put into each one. Things like pointing out that one of the crew-members made the flags her self and using unique piece combos (I love the inclusion of Ahsoka here!) is great! The ship is incredible too. While it may lack some of the realism of some of the ships in the GNAR contest so far, this one really jumps out to me as a favorite. I think it's because it's like something I would build. It's not perfectly smooth all over, but it's got a lot of things that jump out and say "NPU"! This ship is pure eye-candy for me. Thank you for obsessing for 2 weeks , I'm enjoying the results tremendously! Quote
mccoyed Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 Aw man, what a nice comment. I have actually been thinking about breaking it down and doing a ground-up redesign into a smaller, sleeker ship so that I can do some MOCs with it when the Mitgardian Ch 2 challenge rolls around. Right now it's so big that it overwhelms my modest photo set-up (my lightbox is tiny and so are my lamps). The crew, however, will remain intact of course! I actually thought of making a challenge for GoH fig enthusiasts to come up with their own addition to the crew, the winner would be included in all MOCs involving The Hold Fast. I worried no one would be interested or that I wouldn't be able to reproduce the fig from my own collection so I never bothered. I also don't know what the rules are involving average GoHers posting their own challenges, come to think of it. Anyway, glad you liked the ship. I promise my next one will retain some of the same scrappiness and hopefully better blend the realism Kabel champions with the fantasy elements I'm always inclined to include. I'll be paying close attention to Gabe's ship(s) as well next time I set out to make one. Quote
robuko Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 A very nice sea worthy vessel. The stern is a little too square, but the rigging is very appealing. Good Build! Quote
kabel Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 @mc: own challenges should always be talked about with a mod! As for a smaller ship, you should check out the cog on my brickshelf account and see if you like something like that. It's also always a good idea to start a wip thread when doing a ship so that we can give some advice. It's usually the best way to improve fast. Quote
mccoyed Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I've seen that cog. It's awesome. I would probably go to caravel size due to the larger size of my crew. Or do you think a cog sized after yours would be able to hold them all? Quote
