Hello and welcome adventurers. If you have not read HNGK Volume 1, go back and read it! If you have read it, I will assume that you are not dead, and have followed the tips in the first guide. I decided to write another volume as I traveled across these lands because many people were falling to obvious traps and other such things. Enough of my rantings, let's start with...

Chapter 1: Mimicry

dsc03285.jpg

Meet Stephen the warrior! Stephen is a highly skilled warrior, and has several months of adventuring underneath his belt. His strength and endurance are to be admired, and he has also completed many a quest. He is also rather dexterous as well, which means he has been able to avoid some traps and deadly situations. All in all, he is a well rounded adventurer. For his next quest, he was assigned to investigate...

dsc03287.jpg

This dungeon. Upon entering it, Stephen noticed a treasure chest on the other side of a small fire. He was so overwhelmed by easy treasure, that he never noticed the large pools of blood, the bones, the rusty axe, or any of the other creepy signs. As he approached the chest, he noticed it was locked.

dsc03288.jpg

Lucky for him, he had an extra skeleton key lying about. However, as he opened the chest...

dsc03289.jpg

He was surprised to see a fleshy tongue and teeth. He went for his weapon as fast as possible...

dsc03290.jpg

But the mimic was much faster and devoured him. Poor Stephen was caught off guard, and paid the price.

dsc03291.jpg

But the mimic was simply happy to have another meal, and get a new helmet!

This brings me to:

Tip #11: Beware of the obvious signs of a trap! Had Stephen seen the piles of bones and blood pools, he would have suspected a trap. Remember, paying attention to surroundings can save your life... especially when it comes to mimics (who really love devouring adventurers).

Chapter 2: Remember to Carry a Bag

dsc03321.jpg

At some point in your adventure, your going to find some very good loots; you may find it after searching through a forest, or you might just kill a ninja who ran off with some good equipment. It does not matter how you find it, if you keep up the adventuring lifestyle, it will happen one day. However, most adventurers do not think ahead!

Think about this for a moment. You have your armor, weapon, a map, and other consumables on you. However, where are you going to carry the rest of your equipment? It is not like you have an invisible inventory or something. Remember, before setting out...

dsc03324.jpg

Grab a bag, a set of pouches, a pack mule, or if you can afford one of those fancy bags of holding, get one! You will come across a lot of important items on your adventures, and you need a convenient way to hold them. This brings us to...

Tip #12

- Carry a bag on you at all times. It is a simple way to ensure you do not leave anything important, and it allows you to pick up extra loot. Just remember not to over-encumber yourself, or it can lead to a quick death!

Chapter 3: You and "Shiny Things"

Last chapter, I gave you some information about keeping your eyes peeled for loot and being prepared by having a bag. However, it is time I talk about something else that is equally as important. Many adventurers are slain by greed; because they chose to go for the loot first, they promptly died. As you read in chapter 1, mimics are one of the various traps out in the wild that can kill even the most skilled adventurers. However, today you will learn about another one.

Let me begin by introducing you to...

dsc03350.jpg

Sir Adeval the Hawk.

Adeval is a new knight. Having completed his training, he set out to become an accomplished adventurer. After succeeding in a couple of treasure hunts, he was given a challenge to hunt a wayward knight. In his quest, he managed to defeat the knight and claim quite a Jousting Helmet of Fire Resistance. Rumors of his heroism began to spread, and soon he was hired to retrieve the Scorpion Chalice from a dangerous dungeon. After surviving countless encounters...

dsc03351.jpg

his goal was finally in sight. The chalice was nice and shiny, and he found himself immediately drawn towards it.

dsc03352.jpg

He ascended the small stairs then reached for the chalice. Unfortunately...

dsc03353.jpg

if was quite a nasty little trap. To make matters worse, these fires burned much hotter than any other flame he had ever seen. He panicked as his knight garbs were set ablaze. Needless to say...

dsc03355.jpg

he did not live too long. Apparently, no one ever told him about "shiny things."

This brings me to Tip #13

Tip #13

- Beware of shiny things! This includes bright crystals, strange orbs, mounds of gold, bright lights, chalices, and many other bright and shiny objects.

Adventurers tend to believe that these are the goals they are after, and some will even slay their fellow adventurers to achieve these objects. However, many of these objects have dangerous curses or traps surrounding them. It is a general rule to believe that all treasures generally have deadly traps. Humanity and elven kind seem to believe primitive creatures such as goblins are the most easily enticed by the shiny things; my records would clearly show, that humanity (especially adventurers) are usually the ones who are easily enticed.

Tip #14

- Do not be afraid to flee from battle. Only fools believe that retreating is for cowards. Sometimes you will just need to come up with a better plan or bring more people.

Now let us continue with the tips.

Meet...

dsc03427.jpg

Paladin George Wells.

This adventurer discovered he had a talent for using holy magic and quickly joined the Paladin Order. After receiving ample training, he decided to go do good deeds. He protected many, but ultimately received renown for slaying the under boss of an infamous underworld gang. People praised him for being strong and standing up against injustice.

One night after adventuring, George decided to camp out underneath a tree. However...

dsc03428.jpg

he was unaware that the same gang pulled their gold together to hire a professional assassin to kill him. To make matters worse, George did not sleep with his armor on! Needless to say...

dsc03430.jpg

he never saw it coming.

This leads us to

Tip #15

- Be careful where you choose to rest! Not all places that you rest at are secure. This also applies to certain inns and taverns!

- AND -

Tip #16

- Unless you happen to be one of those heroines that has the sleep armor spell or something, always keep your armor on if you sleep in insecure areas. Things like snake bites and spider bites (or anything else) might possibly be stopped by your regular armor.

Let's move on to the next important lesson. Along your journeys as an adventurer, you will come across those who require your help. As you continue to assist others, you will one day gain favor with many people; some of which have very influential power, or have other benefits. These people typically represent different organizations or factions, that one day might become very good allies. This leads us to...

Tip #17

- Get some allies! You never know when a wayward group of knights, or the power of nobility, or anyone else might provide benefits.

You never know who will be ready to assist you one day. For all you know, acquiring the aid of random groups of people may one day aid you in your time of need!

A lot of information has been covered up to this point. Now is where we start looking into some more advanced tips for adventurers. I can think of no other place to start than with the story of...

dsc03600.jpg

Falcon Knight, Borkus the Blue.

Borkus was originally a wandering knight. Throughout two years of adventuring, he became a falcon knight and was close to becoming one of their higher ranking knights. In order to do this, he was sent on a quest to obtain a sacred flower, which was said to be in the oldest part of the forest. So Borkus set out on an epic journey into the forest and one day found the area with the sacred flower.

Unfortunately, he had run out of food while traversing the forest, and was forced to rely on his instinct to find food to eat. Upon finding the flower, he saw that it looked clean, and even smelled wonderful. Its scent was akin to a ripe fruit. He shrugged then took a bite of the flower. What followed was one of the worst stomach aches, followed by a surge of paralysis. Borkus fell over and laid down in the forest.

To make matters worse, he was not aware that the paralysis was permanent. The forest wrapped around him and absorbed him. It was almost six years before his remains were discovered.

dsc03602.jpg

According to druids, he was alive for four of those years, feeling the forest slowly absorbing him.

This brings us to...

Tip #18

- Be careful of the herbs or plants that you decide to ingest. While it can be helpful for those aspiring alchemists out there, it is generally a dangerous idea to do this. Many herbs and other gathered plants bring bad side effects with the worst being death.

Not everything you find is edible.

Tip #19

- Remember to bring a torch with you! Although torches can give your position away, sometimes they allow you to see dangerous traps or get a better grasp on your surroundings. Only the unwary adventurer travels in the darkness (well unless you're one of those sneaky guys).

Tip #20

- Be Brave.

I have addressed you on many situations where fleeing or finding different options to deal with an opponent as necessary, but it is time for me to level with you. No matter where you go, you will never be fully prepared to not get killed; sometimes, you have to make the most out of some situations. You might find yourself backed into a corner with no escape, and a horde of undead facing you. Fear might set into you as you look at a cave with corpses as its decor. If you looked at every tip in the two volumes, you'd probably just turn and walk away. However, the reality of being an adventurer is that you will always be close to death. Keep your wits about you and be ready to act when necessary.

The best adventurers are the brave ones, who are smart enough to determine when entering a situation is not a good option.
