We (myself and teen aged kids) are wrapping up the bulk of the airport area of our city, so I thought I would post some pics. This has been a really fun project. We put a lot of thought into it and I think it turned out nice and is very playable yet as realistic as possible.

So here goes:

Overall shot of new runway. The wall has the gray tiles so we cleaned them out.

We added the approach lighting and bearing markings with white tiles and flat clear and red pieces. While this is not exactly to FAA standards, we thought the detail of the markings would look nicer especially since we have no room for the actual lighting in advance of the runway.

Here you can see the fire station area and general aviation area. We would like to add a hanger and fire station structure in the future.

overall shot showing the runway, tower and gen aviation area is secure.

Here is the commercial terminal area. It's a bit crowded, but we used the space as efficiently as possible.

The jetway moves and extends.

Main entrance to terminal. The parking garage is right next door.

Here you can see the airport monorail station is just on the other side of the rail road bridges.

DSCN0185.JPG

The terminal has all the stuff a terminal should have, ticketing, screening, baggage check, seating.

The top floor of the garage has been converted to a heliport. But there is a large surface parking lot behind the garage, so still plenty of parking

Here are some more pics of the airport and a few of how it ties into the rest of the city. You can drive to the airport from downtown, but it's a long drive through the suburban and industrial areas to get there or you can take transit and it's one stop across the bay.

Wow, that is quite a city! And nice lego workshop! That is my dream, to have a whole lego room, and be blessed with children that share my interest (I already ought a bunch of Friends and Disney Duplo for ny 2 and a half months old daughter :classic: ) Anyways I love the layout, and love the extensions to the airport, especially the boarding arm or whatever they call them :classic:

Cool layout; I'm slightly worried about the red train on the beach stop though, looks on the verge of diving in..!!

By the way, thats a lovely monorail! And with 2 trains!!! That was one of the sets I always wanted as a kid, and now they cost a fortune. You are one blessed person :classic:

As a commercial pilot, I love that the numbering on the runway is correct. The jetway is fantastic and it looks very playable for the kids! I do cringe at thinking about having to do a short field takeoff/landing with an obstacle over the jet's tail at the end of the runway though :) The only other thing for me would be the threshold stripes, they should be parallel not in a shuffleboard pattern but I'm thinking you did that to fit in the approach lights. Very nice.

Great airport, and city in general.

You've done a fantastic job with the runway, is that 5x48 baseplates?

I've wanted to do an airport myself, and have recently got a hold on about 6 extra planes, but getting the runway big enough to make it look somewhat realistic, but still not take over the city is the sticking point. Your scale looks about right.

I can't wait to see what you come up with for the hangar.

This looks like it was and still is a lot of fun to build/play with. :sweet: Thank you for the photos!

This is an incredible city and the new airport is awesome. Such creativity!

Thanks, we have had a lot of fun envisioning how to put it all together!

Well, I started early too. My 13 year old had many sets starting at just a few years old, he kept all the sets and pieces and ten years later, we have this out of control monster.

Cool layout; I'm slightly worried about the red train on the beach stop though, looks on the verge of diving in..!!

Well, it is the end of the line, so it stops there, but all it takes is the switch to be set wrong and they go swimming, but so far no accidents. We have had some crashes with the other trains though!

I actually didn't get the monorail till last year. Is was the one set I have not gotten while it was for sale in retail stores. I bought a complete set for about $400 as a Christmas present and bought a bunch of spare parts and track to add to it and build another train, I actually have quite a bit of track that I have no room for. It was worth every penny, that monorail really takes the city to the next level and brings it all together.

Both my sons are into aviation. My 13 year old pretty much did the design of the runway by himself and we both knew the threshold was not quite right etc, but it looks good getting the approach lighting into the runway just gives it some nice detail. He also did the control tower. My older son (17) did most of the airport and jetway. I do most of the overall city layout and have done most of the other MOCs around the city, but they have both stepped up on the airport. Wish we had more room, but a good pilot can avoid obstacles right?

AWESOME modified 2006 airport, tiled runway and fantastic tower......joining a wonderfully layout city......Brick On 'kc2dc' !

Thanks, yea, the original airport terminal is one of our older sets. It's actually gone through several mods.

Yep. I think it's five of them. There may be one more in the back under the parking garage. I was at a lego store one day and it's hard to pay what those big baseplates cost, but I decided to go ahead and get some and that's what set off doing the runway. Once we had the baseplates, we had to tile them :). The scale turned out pretty good. That commuter jet fits perfectly on the runway, but some of the bigger jets and cargo planes are a bit big. We may try to squeeze in a taxiway or apron on the other side of the runway so we have a place to park more planes.

This looks like it was and still is a lot of fun to build/play with. :sweet: Thank you for the photos!

yes, very playable. It helps that it's somewhat easier to access compared to other parts of the city too.

Thanks everybody for the comments!

I can post more pics of the city here or start a new thread if people are interested. I took a bunch of photos of other parts of the city while taking the airport photos.

this is mine on the works......

never mind , it says the image its too big ..... how do i get the size smaller for you guys to see it ???

Wow that's a really nice airport you built here!

For the details/lights on the runway you could have also done something like this:

runway.png

I didn't draw the numbers or the sides and center lights.

A Displaced thresholds on the terminal end of the runway would have make sense.

For the lights, runways are not necessary always equipped with ramp lights. It can be very simple when you don't have any instruments approach as you can see on my drawing (2 lines of green and red at each end, the green lights facing out).

But that's just details, great job anyway!

To describe this as awesome, and amazing would not do it justice, and be a terrible understatement. This is something to aspire to!

I thought about suggesting a displaced threshold, but I think the landing gear would melt off the plane before the end of the runway. You can only do so much in a small amount of space, looks good to me.

Yeah true but looking at the plane parked at the end of the runway, I don't think the plane will be able to touch down at the threshold anyway.

This is great. I now know how to create my runway when the time comes. That is a lot of tiles though. Bet just those cost a pretty penny. Anymore pics of what looks like a C-130 descending above the city?

Amazing - its just such a shame that Lego make PlayMobile style aircraft now, the 80s & 90s Planes were so much more in proportion!

  • 8 months later...

Can you add instructions for the jetway and fueler? I love the way the airport has everything a real airport has

It looks great. Creating an airport is in my long term plans. Great job.

This is awesome, and also the main reason I will never have an airport in my town - lots of real estate needed for it to be great!

That is a very cool layout!! The airport fits in perfectly and I love the attention to detail you've gone for! Excellent work all round (I just wish that I had that much space!!)

Amazing! I hope mLego releases more planes and Airport sets in the future (I did buy the last lot back in Oz, but my siblings decided to destroy them... :(
