Does anybody use old (80's/90's) technic parts anymore?

Old Technics, New Technics. I use them all. I mix and match in some GBCs.

I have a few of the 80's / 90's sets. I did motorize the 8850 A-model and the 8862 B-model with the new PF.

I am in the process of trading most of the old stuff I have, the rest will be posted in the BSTF, some pneumatic stuff, so have a lookout in a day or do if you are interested:)

I am greate fan of the "classic" Lego Technic, the new parts as practical and usefull they are they simply do not make the building challenging as the OLD do :) I noticed that even new part are giving possibilities that old could not, people are trying still to create their custom parts as well.

Currently I am collecting old sets that either I had before DarkAge or were always my dream - such as 8865 - and I will start to do my own MOC and MODs

I wonder, does any one know which Lego Technic part is the oldest in use? Please do not consider those that have been updated - such as old z24 gear vs new z24 or famous black pins - without and with slot example -

Technic Axle 4L I believe that was around at least in the 1960's, it was a lego system set but it has a black 4L axle.

I saw it on peeron.com trying to find it again...

The modern Technic axles were introduced in 1977 but the 4L was not available until later. If there was an axle in the 1960's, it was a different part.

They existed in translucent white in the old Samsonite sets prior to Expert Builder, but they were not exactly the same. Peeron doesn't distinguish. The modern black version dates from 1977.

Those gears are very nice! Strong and great for chaindriven wheels. Love sets like this :

But these sets where not released in the US? They had Samsonite over there with different gears/sets, like this :

I have some selected parts from the good old days in my collection, and heaps more stored in my parent's garage..

The parts I've found to be useful, are mostly fairly specialized parts, that there aren't any modern counterparts to. Examples are the square bottomed pneumatic cylinders (both first and second generation), the rotor head/swashplate from Whirlwind Rescue and Nighthawk sets, as well as some old style toothed bushings along with the old type of toothed toggle joints, that lett you attach things to axles in angles you cant with the current parts.

Also, I have all my flex system parts, although I have never found a use for them in my MOCs over the last two years. I do have some plans for them though

In addition, I have several micro motors, which I also haven't used as much as I thought I would

at my parent's house I still have kilos of old school lego! Was thinking to ship them here to UK and use them!!

I mean...how can someone get rid of them??? they are first of all memories, the are the "brick" of our childwood..... WE DIDN'T BUILD THEM, THEY BUILT US!!

I have not build much Technic yet but I'm stuck with the old technic style. I have not got around to learn the ways of new technic yet.

I recently used a lot of old beams in my new spaceship to stiff it up.

SNIPE, the issue with the old Axle and Pin Connector 3651 and Axle and Pin Connector Toggle Joint Toothed 4273a (with/without slots) are the fact that they crack quite often :( Well basically it is the main issue with old technic parts that within the years the plastic loose it "softness" and crack.... it happend with most of my 3651/4273a/9244 (Un.Joint.4L) .... :(

I think that the wheel with split axle hole 3482 you shown has been discontined in 2006

I took a look at the inventories and I think that the oldest part for sure are all BLACK AXEL 4,6,8,10 they go back to 1977 and are still in the sets of today.

AOW, all the standard Technic parts ; black axles, old grey bushings and pins, standard gears and holed bricks, foam tires etc are from 1977. The only joker is the wheel clever SNIPE pointed out (and it's also the only part carried over from the old pre 1977 theme to the current one (well, black axles/holed bricks are still current, but that's about it)) .. I think. Can you find another joker, SNIPE?

Also SNIPE, no point in mentioning any more old grey parts/Technic bits as they're all usefull .. at least to me

The only ultra common part that wasn't part of the 1977 lineup is this, btw :

Pulleys, difs, shock absorbers, 12t bevels, half pins and toothed connectors came shortly after that ..

This info is very easily available at Blackbird's constantly opdated Technicopedia (Or more cumbersomely at Bricklink)

I don't use a whole lot of old-school Technic parts anymore, but a moc I'm working on right now will use some old 20x30 tires. Another moc of mine will probably end up using the older square bottom pneumatic cylinders, unless I can find some pneumatic cylinder brackets for cheap.

I like using one of the older suspension pieces for trailer hitches.

I plan on using some of the old 9V flashing lights and sirens on some future mocs.

I,ve got a large collection that encompasses everything back to the early Expert Builder sets of the late 70's early 80's. I use it all, just depends on what I,m building. I,ve got a large crawler crane built now that uses both studded and studdless elements.

I'm a big fan of the vintage 1970s to 1980s Technics sets - in fact I'm starting to collect it and add to my sets that I had as a child. If anyone has got any spare complete sets I may be interested!
