gogglev Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Hello everyone, Longtime lurker here. I picked up Emmet’s Contruct-o-Mech yesterday and seeing how as a review has not been made yet, I thought I would try making one myself. Set Title: 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech Set #: 70814 Theme: The Lego Movie Pieces: 708 Minifigures: 3+Unikitty Year of Release: 2014 Price at Release: USD $60 Box The typical Lego Movie box, its actually surprisingly large for a 60 dollar set. 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-3 by siningy, on Flickr 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-2 by siningy, on Flickr Contents Inside are 5 numbered bags, the instructions bagged with a piece of cardboard and a sticker sheet. 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-4 by siningy, on Flickr 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-5 by siningy, on Flickr 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-6 by siningy, on Flickr Minifigures Included in the set are Emmet, 2 Skeletrons and an Angry Unikitty. Emmet comes with an alternate angry face and the Skeletrons are the same as the ones in Metalbeard’s Duel. Angry Unikitty is awesome as always and totally worth the price of the set. 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-13 by siningy, on Flickr 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-14 by siningy, on Flickr The Build After bag 1 70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech-7 by siningy, on Flickr I think this is a new piece released with this set? Articulation is pretty limited with the legs only able to move backwards. The wrecking balls can only move around the tiny chains so you can’t really knock over enemies with them. At 60 dollars, I can’t complain too much as it seems like one of the better parts to price ratio sets released in the last few years but I would have preferred to pay twice as much for a larger and more accurate version of the Construct-o-Mech. Ceroknight Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Thank you for the review! I agree, it's sort of a let down for we as well Quote
Faefrost Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Yeah I built this one tonight. It looks great. Not as great as the one in the movie, but still looks good. But it has so little articulation as to be more of a statue than a mech. A pivot at the waist would have greatly improved this one. Quote
Sir Brickalot Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Your pics are I love this set. Thanks for the review! Quote
Jody Meyer Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 As much as a let down it is compared to the movie version, I think it is still worth to have the set, nice simple review, great photos. cheers. Quote
Cammo Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Never knew there were a lot of differences with the one in the movie. Does someone have comparison pictures? Quote
TheLegoDr Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Thanks for the review. It looked pretty similar to the movie, but I haven't compared them side by side. More articulation would be better. I only want angry kitty from this though. I can imagine she will go for a pretty penny in the aftermarket. Quote
DPrime Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Thanks for the review, I really like this set... Not sure if I will pick it up...Benny's SSS and the Dropship will be first. :) Quote
Routemaster Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Thanks for your early review. Great pictures! I also picked this set up earlier this week in our local toy store. To me Emmet's Construct -o- Mech (and Angry Kitty!!!) were a 'must buy' since I first saw it. I'm totally pleased with it and I'm glad to have it. I added a few extra pieces though. To me TLG did a fantastic job for my 48 Euros. With nearly 700 pieces this Mech is very heavy and with his sheer size (35 cm) it surely doesn't need more articulation in his legs. I guess with a much larger Constructo-o-Mech it would become difficult to keep the balance on his tracks. I tried to compare it with pics from the LEGO The Movie game. Couldn't find any differences. In the game the wrecking balls also only rotate a little bit in the air. BTW the two grey 1x2 grilles are not left overs. They're are missing on top of one of Emmet's Construct-o-mech shoulders. TheBrickHitHouse Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Love this set - it looks fantastic on display and really channels that 'Aliens' vibe. Great price too - a good £20 / 40% cheaper than on a standard price per brick ratio. Quote
Lyichir Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Good review. FYI, the piece you thought was new to this set isn't—it has appeared in white in loads of sets, mostly the Chima Legend Beasts and the Mixels, but even in yellow it's not necessarily new, coming in one set, 70124 Eagle Legend Beast. Still, that set only has one of them, so this set's eight are more than welcome. This is one of the Lego Movie sets I'm not sure whether I'll get. While I'd love to have Angry Kitty and Emmet's exclusive face from this set, the lack of functionality relative to this set's size (and the fact that this set's "exclusive characters" are available in other forms in other sets) might mean I'll want to allocate my budget elsewhere. Israel Hands Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Is there any significance with the serial number across the chest piece? The promotional images has the serial number as SM-XXXXXXXXXXX, yours is very different. Is it an unlock code for the LEGO game? Quote

rollermonkey Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Unlocks 'construction pants' (whatever that is) and Angry Kitty. Or maybe it's Rage Kitty. Quote

The promotional images has the serial number as SM-XXXXXXXXXXX, yours is very different. Is it an unlock code for the LEGO game? I think it unlocks stuff in the TLM game. Never knew there were a lot of differences with the one in the movie. Does someone have comparison pictures? It's mainly a difference of scale. The movie version is much larger, hence in the movie the treads are the large technic treads, those cylinders on the back are cement mixers, the shoulder cranes are actual tapered crane pieces. The wrecking balls are made from those Power Miner wheels, etc. just everything is a step up in size and complexity. Quote
clover Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) I am very very ...well... I do not find the word... I really like the screen one, and this one is so "not big enought". But at least, I will need this set if I want to make like the I want it to be... EDIT : it seems that I will need two of this set to achieve what I want it to be... Colossus Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I don't know whether I'd like a bigger construction Mech. On one hand, a larger scale mech would be very impressive, but then comes the higher price tag. On the other hand, a smaller mech is easier for my kids to manage, but needs some mods. I want to add articulation to the arms, waist, and perhaps the legs. I swapped out the shorter chains for longer ones. Easier to bash some of the bigger micromanagers that way. Quote
AyliffeMakit Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 (edited) Never knew there were a lot of differences with the one in the movie. Does someone have comparison pictures? Here's a picture of the movie version (yes, this is really the best image I could find of the movie version) It's probably around twice the height of the official set version, so if anyone is thinking of building the version from the film, good luck with that EDIT: You know what I just said about that being the best image I could find? Well I just found a better image Edited June 23, 2014 by AyliffeMakit Quote
clover Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 another point is that a MOC need to be as "playable" as he movie. The shoulders and the feet have to move very freely as a joint ball is used, but, with this size... Quote
rollermonkey Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 The big problem seems to be that if you can make it full-scale from the movie, and fully posable, that it won't be able to stay standing without help. I think that's probably the biggest problem they likely had with making a set for release, too. Quote
klinton Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Has LEGO released a mech larger than this? Until I'd built this one, I kind of assumed that they had a pretty standard size for thier mech creations, with all seeming to follow a pretty similar construct. I'm full curious to see how they'd handle even larger creations. This one seems to cap out the limits of feasability. It's just stable enough that it's all good (with a little wobble, but nothing detrimental or off putting), but I think if it were any larger it'd be a teetering mess. Quote
Jared Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Excellent review! I really wish I had the money for this set though now that your review has me all pumped up to get it! :( Quote
