Ice planet - how do I create fake snow and ice?

Hello,

I wanted to ask whether anyone has ever attempted recreating the classic images from the Lego catalogues in the early 90s, in real life.

I'm really getting into post-classic (?) Space such as Ice Planet and Blacktron II, and would really like to recreate the snow and ice, especially the ice-frozen Blacktron guy as shown here, but obviously out of something that won't melt !!!!.

Has anyone got experience or links to ideas on how to recreate the snow and ice in this picture?

I haven't tried it, as I prefer building with actual Lego bricks , but for the encasing in ice, you could try with gelatin.

Btw, that was one of my favourite pictures from the LEGO catalogues as a child

You could use, tin foil, actual ice, or make your own soap molds in the form of ice formations and use the gelatin soap mix.

If you are looking for a proper scale model solution look in to produts like water effects, while these are used for creating areas of realistic looking water in model railroad and scale model diorama they are also good for creating fake ice.

For ice you could buy some mould release spray and a rock mould:- http://www.anticsonl..._1_1833207.html and then cast using the water effects.

Another option would be to look in to clear two part resin, and then create a mould in a suitable material and cast it using the clear resin:- http://www.metalclay...esin-300ml.html

The top two ideas are the least expensive but have a wider range of possible uses, they both will require some skill to use and get the finish you desire. It is also worth mentioning that using resin is quite messy and can be somewhat dangerous due to the exothermic reaction that the resin creates as it cures. From looking at the images in your post It looks like they originaly used a clear resin and some good quality moulds.

I've never tried it myself but for stand alone ice, water, etc.. You could make rock candy using plain gelatin or clear sugar syrup. Then form or mold into what ever you want.
