[seeing the man sit down, the Red Priest snaps back out of his daydreams. ]

Red Priest: Ah, the eagerness of youth. No, I don't think that will be necessary, though if it becomes a problem I will be sure to contact you. Where is your order based from? As for your quest, depending on what it entails, I may be able to help you. What do you require?

Cleric Malcolm: My order has posts in all major Historican cities, though we have a particularly strong presence in Mitgardia and Avalonia. As for my quest...

[Malcolm produces the map from earlier]

Cleric Malcolm: the map shows the location of an artifact know as the staff of Lindus, it belonged to a particularly strong druid, it was a gift from the divines that has the ability to purify lands, I'm searching for it in order to put a stop to the plague in Avalonia. However, the staff is guarded by agents of the enemy and other evil creatures. I cannae do it alone, that is where you gentlemen come in.

Red Priest: Hmmm. I don't think I'd be able to help you very much, as I and my entourage are headed south towards the port of Carn. Perhaps you. Perhaps you might enlist some of the other patrons?

Curate Henricus Qaemil: "This seems to be a fairly legitimate and justified expedition, but I live under a strict tenet calling for nonviolence, unless in times of crusade. However, the expenditure of a few church knights may not be impossible,"

[Qaemil glances at the map, memorizing the location]

Red Priest: Excellent suggestion my friend! If you require anymore men, stop by any of the shrines in eastern Avalonia. The caretakers and priests will be glad to point you in the right direction. May the Father bless your judgement, may the Mother guard your life, may the Warrior guide your hand, may the Maiden give you peace, and may the Other let you be, until your time is up.

[Finishing his blessing, the priest glances back at the map one last time.]

[Magnus pulls an old piece of paper from out of his pocket]

Magnus: Drat the man was wrong he will pay for sending me on a wild goose chase. I suppose it my reward will be somewhere on the road to Avalonia.

Mysterious stranger: Excuse me for interrupting sir but are you Magnus Blackmaine.

Magnus: Yes, why?

Stranger: I have some news that you might like to here. I have heard that a preist has aquired your package and is heading towards Avalonia.

[Magnus rises from the table thanks both the stranger and master Gabbold and leaves the tavern]

[A rather unremarkable gentleman arrives at the inn. Leaving his horse to water, he enters The Grand Griffon. Dressed in fine, but unassuming attire, only his rather large hat stands out. This is underlined as he bows and lifts his hat in a smiling, somewhat extravagant gesture, directed at Master Gabbold.]

Gentleman: "Master Gabbold - I trust I find you well! A goblet of whhhite and a light meal, if you please. I shall be at my table."

[He speaks in a dramatic dialect, emphasising the "h" in white and with rich intonation. Without waiting a reply, he strolls confidently towards a table in the middle of the room, smiling and bowing his head respectfully at the patrons which gaze he meets.]

[in room ten Doc Gooshi is tending to the wounded Cedrica guardsman. There are groans, grunts and the occasional curse, but the wounded man wasn't in any serious danger. Ehfrik prods the remaining guards for information.]

Ehfrik Daffys: How do ya figur dey got in da city. Ah doubt dey'd be sneekin' in wit da workers doin' da rebuidn'.

Guardsman Hirum: We don't think so. From the way the bodies looked, these Hand orcs may have been hiding in the city ever since Revolword's defeat.

Ehfrik Daffys: Ya said six? Iffin' der's dat big a group been hidin' out, den dey mus' 'ave an empteh house somewheres. Iffin' dat's so, den der's probleh even more.

Guardsman Hirum: Aye, and when Dom over there is finished with his stitches, I'll be heading back to the guard tower to make my report. You and yours will probably be on the wall, while those of us who know the city best search the unoccupied houses.

Ehfrik Daffys: Den I'll let youse take care of yer own, Hirum. Hope ta be seein' ya again, under better circ'm'sanzzes.

[Ehfrik left for his own room. There he looked over at each of the Zuurees. Each had an empty restorative vial near their sleep limp hands. Ehfrik stripped out of his armor and gambeson. Suddenly the rigors of the day seemed to land on his shoulders. Holding his head with his left hand, Ehfrik pulled out his restorative with his right. He plopped onto his bed, dislodging the stopper of the vial in the process. Ehfrik downed the liquid quickly, knowing full well that he would be out before the vial fell from his hand. Just as he goes under, Efhrik mutters. . .]

Ehfrik Daffys: Ah've better not 'ave a butt drawn on mah face in da mornin.

[shay Liih quietly slips back into the tavern. Doc Gooshie was quite generous regarding access to his library. She had found something relating to the Book of Confusion, in a tome written before the Great Migration. She quotes. . .]

Shay Liih: "Behind the laughing maiden, under the dead mountain, listening I am. Water flows before the endless drinker, thought has little meaning to the Green. Echos don't quite reach, knotted until the faithful comes, listening I am." Verse nineteen. Dinna think Ah could 'member it all.

[Master Gabbold steps up to Shay, capturing her arm.]

Master Gabbold: That is some skill you have, Captain. Thank you for the warning, but you might not want to quote the Mad Elf. Too many bad feelings from the last time someone started teaching his word.

Shay Liih: Whaddaya mean? Ah was qoutin' mah peoples Book of Confusion. Uh . . . Ahh . . . Oh! Ah've gotta send word ta Sdair!

[shay Liih rushes through the tavern. Nearly falling over some priestly looking men staring at a map, she makes haste to the stairs.]

[Natolyth had spent the past few days not interacting with people. He was perfecting his skills of stealth that he was basing off of what he learned about the Drow's method of fighting. He had not spent all the time in his room, but he was fairly certain that no one else had been able to tell when he left or returned. His sneaking about had allowed him to over hear many interesting pieces of information. Today though, he headed to the bar and took a seat, ordering a final drink before he left for Mitgardia again]

Natolyth: Thank you for your hospitality Mastor Gabbold, but I must be going now.

Mastor Gabbold: Always a pleasure to have a Mitgardian staying with us sir. Perhaps we'll see you again in the future.

Natolyth: Perhaps, but for now I am needed back in Dalig Ulv.

Master Gabbold: Troubling news from home sir?

Natolyth: Nothing specific, no. Just some things I've heard about town that make me think I'm needed more there than here.

[A young mitgardian man walks in the door] Young man: Hello bartender. I am on my way to Carn as I got seperated from my master coming back from Avalonia. He goes by the name of Halt.

Master Gabbold: Ah yes. Carn is south west of here. Just head that way until you find a small strip of trees. When you reach that just follow the trees.

Young man: Thank you sir. [The boy leaves]

Logan: Good evening, bartender. My name is Logan Fleetfoot. I wondered if I could trouble you for a bite to eat, and a place to stay.

[Lykoi Sicarius stepped through the doors of the tavern. Supposedly, it was the best tavern in these parts, the pulse of the city. It seemed to be deserted. His footsteps echoed as he walked across the room, passing tables with empty chairs. Lykoi touched the counter of the bar, a thick dust sticking to his fingertips. It seemed as if it hadn't been cleaned in over 6 months.

He walked around the bar and grabbed a bottle of what he hoped to be a strong spirit. He wiped away some of the dust from the label. It would do. Lykoi took out a gold coin from his purse and tossed it onto the spot where the bottle had sat. It was more than enough to pay for the bottle. The proprietor could keep the change. It looked like he needed it.

Lykoi Sicarius walked back around the bar and pulled the cork from the bottle with his teeth, not bothering to sit. He took a swig of the spirit and put the bottle on the counter hard. The sound of the bottle connecting with the counter sounded like the crack of a whip in the empty room. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and stared into the dirty mirror hanging behind the bar. He thought about the mission he was about to go on, once again going over the details in his mind. At least the place was quiet.]

[Captain Shay Liih hadn't been in the tavern room proper in months. Her joint duties with the City Guard, along with her three subordinates, gave her little free time. Toady was special, though. The Zuuree twins were leaving for Avalonia. They had applied for, and had been granted, commission suspension, with payment to date. The assayer had been quite fair in the liquidating Shay's stones for the twins' pay. The Nestlands foursome had decided a send-off was in order.

Though the room had been cleaned recently, there were still signs of the months of neglect it had received. Ehfrik Daffys whistled at the effort Heb had finally made.]

Ehfrik Daffys: Ah sur hope Mora will be back more regul'r.

Shay Liih: Her ma's on de mend, so yah, she'll be workin' more.

Ehfrik Daffys: Good.

Lohp Zuuree: Who givsa shook? Wahl an' me are outta here.

[Wahl points to the far end of the bar.]

Wahl Zuuree: Der she is. Mora, is dere any blue mead left?

[Mora pauses in her attempt to finish Heb's halfhearted cleaning. She dips her head a little to discern which twin had spoken.]

Mora: Aye, missur Wahl, sir. Six bottles, as of this afternoon's count. Would misselle Captain like some sour red tea?

Shay Liih: Yeah, thanks, Mora. 'Ave de giant 'zard eggs come in yet?

Mora: No, misselle. Cook has wanted to do you right, but the caravans have been light of late. Bandits mostly, I think.

Shay Liih: Ah und'rstand. Ah can smell da roast pork, so we'll 'ave dat, with bread an' 'tatoes, when it's reddeh.

Mora: Aye, misselle.

[Mora leaves to gather the drinks. The foursome sit at a table near the kitchen.]

Ehfrik Daffys: Aneh idea where youse two are headed?

Lohp Zuuree: Doc Gooshie gave meh a map, though he sayz some of de new lordling's 'states may no' be on 'ere.

Wahl Zuuree: We're gonna try fer de Mystic Isles, an' den maybeh catch a ship ta Eastgate.

Shay Liih: Dat'll take months.

Lohp Zuuree: Dat's half de fun. Sdair's off on 'is adv'nt'r, so we're gonna 'ave one, too.

Shay Liih: Whatever. Jus' don' go all heathen an' start eatin' birds.

Lohp Zuuree: Yes, mommy . . . Er, Captain.

[Mora comes back with the drinks.]

Mora: Cook says the food will be another half hour.

Shay Liih: Mora, how's yer ma' doin'?

Mora: Much better, misselle. Doc Gooshie finally got the right herbs, and he says she should be all better by next Tuesday.

[Shay wags her finger as if to indicate she wants to whisper something to Mora. She leans in close, and Shay quickly kisses the serving girl's forehead, while at the same time placing a small ruby in her hand.]

Shay Liih: Yer a good lass, now go an' attend ta yer duties.

Mora: Thank ye, misselle!

[Mora rushes off to secure her prize. Ehfrik shakes his head, laughing.]

Ehfrik Daffys: Soft touch.

[The door opens, and a gentleman in fine clothes, suggesting his noble birth, walks in.]

Gentleman: "Greetings, Master Gabbold, I am Sir Brandon of Avalonia, and I come for a room and a taste of your Dragon Flight Sampler, which I have heard tales of far and wide."

Master Gabbold: "Well, you have come to the right place. You Sampler will arrive shortly."

Sir Brandon: "When I heard tales back home, I expected this to be a lively place, but where are all the guests?"

Master Gabbold: "Well, its been slow. With the current strife in Kaliphlin and Nocturnus, our roads have not been safe for travel."

[ A tall man in a long fur lined coat, and a dark green cloak, covering a sword and some armor walks in, his clothes dripping with rain water. He removes his helmet and uncovers unruly long hair. He glances around the tavern and goes to sit down at the bar. ]

Lord Ryder: Master Gabbold [inclines head] a glass of Avalonian Red Please [tosses a coin over the counter] Hello Sir Brandon, Tis nice to see a fellow Avalonian Lord on such a foul night.

[brandon moves toward Lord Ryder's table]

Lord Brandon: "Good day, Lord Ryder. It is pleasant to see a fellow Avalonian brave enough to travel in this time of strife. I believe we have met before. I may have visited your castle and town of Sardonia a couple years back, I believe?"

Posted (edited)

Lord Brandon: "Yes. I thought so. Good to see you once more, old friend. These are hard times indeed, but 3 years ago, this city was held by Revolword's forces. I pray that we will never get to that point, but we must prepare for the inevitable war in Nocturnus. Our Avalonian soldiers have been here for months, waiting to make a move.

[brandon leans back in his chair and relaxes, then takes a breath and prepares to tell a story.]

Lord Brandon: "Do you remember the Dragonflight? Five years ago, I remember. I visited Sardonia to ask you to support the Flight of Dragons against Lord Baine, am I correct? Magnificent castle. The memories come back quite vividly now. Yes, those were dark times before Artorious came.

[brandon hadn't returned to the Tavern in a few months. Still, he was one of the only customers. He knew that with a conflict in Nocturnus brewing ever so closely, not many dared travel the roads. Not with the Desert King's army marching from the south, pillaging the whole way to Nocturnus. With the threat of the Algus still in Mitgardia, Mitgardians gathered in the large cities, not wanting to brave the still dangerous roads. It was only few Avalonians, like him, who still were able to travel, though bandits and robbers still made travel difficult.

Brandon moved to the back table, as he always had. This time, his armies were in Nocturnus, joined with the armies of Drond's Fields. He however, still had business to attend to, and travelled back and forth.]

Master Gabbold: "Good day, Lord Brandon, it's nice to see you return again. Still, not many people have braved the roads. Not with so many dangers. What would you like, by the way?"

Lord Brandon: "I think some Avalonian sweet wine will do."

Master Gabbold: "Of course."

[A tall man wearing a brown hooded cloak walks into the room, dripping from the rain. He removes his cloak to show his black hair, along with his sword and leather armor underneath, showing he is some kind of warrior. He moves to the closest table and scans the rest of the room for a few moments before draping his cloak and sheath onto the chair next to him.

Sitting down, he sees Master Gabbold is busy at the moment, and instead gestures for a serving girl to come towards his table.]

Serving Girl: "What would you like, sir? And my I get your name?"

Warrior: "My name is Ser Brandon, from Avalonia, and I think I will go for something exotic. How about some Sultan's Spice Lager?"

Serving Girl: "Good day, Ser Brandon. Your Lager will come shortly."

[Shay Lih lounged alone tonight. Ehfrik Daffys has the night watch for the next few days. The giant 'zard eggs had finally arrived, so Shay is luxuriating in a taste of home. Mora pads over to freshen her sour red tea.]

Mora: Heb is warming your bathwater now, Misselle Lih.

Shay Lih: Ye cen call meh Shay, Mora.

Mora: Aye, misselle.

[Mora heads back behind the bar, and after a few words with Master Gabbold, disappears downward, presumably to some cellar. Shay gives her attention over to the very few patrons here this evening. They seem not to notice her perusal, but Shay lifts her goblet in salute anyway.]
