"Like what? You? I suppose so. You seem properly shaped, I guess." He shrugs. "I don't find elves particularly attractive." "Thanks," says Crowley with a stiff little bow as Nerwen hands him stuff. It seems well practiced, proper somehow. Samuel nods along as Nerwen talks, but his eyes still stay narrowed on Thistlethorp. "I don't trust him," says the Paladin. "For whatever reason, I don't trust him. But I still stand by your side, Nerwen." He lifts the shield. "Thank you for this. Raguel went to help these people. I feel his spirit is with me when I fight with their sword and their shield." Midge turns to Matthias as he rambles about Heroica. "Look, I told you, you don't have to prove anything to me. Just casual observations." Matthias yanks back the trap door. The hinges squeak, and lands with a thud on the dirty ground. Down below is darkness. "Lots of old houses in the city have cellars, but the sewers have cut through some of them. The sewers cut through most of the city." Bert glances down into the darkness. "May want to stop that up, if we can think of a way, just for safety." Matthias glances through the crack in the stones. A quiet back alley is outside. No one is in it. Quote
StickFig Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Matthias hears Midge shut Fenral down... Ouch! he thinks. He peers into the darkness, looking for any occupants, usable items, or sewer connections that are visible, as well as anything that might help them block the trapdoor. "Anyone have any bright ideas on how to secure this door?" he says to the whole group. "Maybe we could have a few of us stand on the door to keep it closed, but if the Crimson Crown sends mages or explosives that might be a bad idea." Yes, I know that the Crimson Crown doesn't have mages, but Matthias doesn't. Happening to glance up for a second, Matthias realizes Midge isn't wearing his armor. "Midge, you might want to throw on your mail, and your helmet. Who know's what's coming." Quote
Masked Builder Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Midge looks Alexis up and down dispassionately. "Like what? You? I suppose so. You seem properly shaped, I guess." He shrugs. "I don't find elves particularly attractive." "Well, whatever you like is your own business I suppose." Alexis pauses for a minute. "What is it you do again?" Quote
Zepher Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 Bert and Matthias glance down into the darkness, but they can't see anything. "A mage may be able to seal it up using some magic, but we lost ours..." he lowers his voice: "Maybe we could ask Midge, but I don't know if he's got the right gems on him. But if it really comes to it, maybe if we get enough people to stand on it, we can do something about it." Midge straightens out his armor so it's on right, and tips his helmet so it's sitting snuggly on his head. "I hang out at Inns and get arrested because the fellow patrons start stupid fights they can't finish," says Midge dismissively. "Sorry, that was rude, I'm really a traveling empty wine bottle salesman. See, I drink the wine while I wander around, to ready the product and all, and then I sell it so I can buy another glass of wine. Lucrative business." Quote
StickFig Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) Matthias rubs his eyes against the darkness and is disappointed that there's simply not enough light to see, then laughs at Midge's career description. "Say, could you do some magic to seal up this trapdoor without drawing too much attention?" Turning to Fenral, the ranger continues, "I'm exhausted. Do you think we might all take turns to watch through the night? Probably at least two of us should be up at any given time, but there are 10 of us, so that shouldn't be difficult. I'll take a later watch with Master Russel and Sir Pigley since we get along well" - the gnome winks at the animals - "but I'd appreciate it if we didn't have the first watch." Edited July 30, 2014 by nstickney Quote
Zepher Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 "Seal up the door? How, exactly? I've got..." he ruffles through a little satchel: "A topaz, assuming you want to electrocute the door and shock it into being shut... a ruby, so if you want to burn the door away, but that seems kind of like the opposite of what you're looking for... and this diamond, if you want the door to be really damn bright. It's your call, really, how you want to approach this thing." "I don't know about getting on so well as opposed to being able to stand each other more than others. I get along with the way you don't attack everything we run into, as opposed to some mages we've met," drawls the Pig. Russel taps him sharply with the dull side of the sword. "He's kidding. We like you a lot!" Quote
Masked Builder Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 "Seems like fun Midge." Alexis listens to Matthias. "Sure, Midge and I will take first watch." She waits for the rest of the party to sleep, then turns to Midge. "Got any wine on you? I could sure use some." Quote
StickFig Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 "Well, I'm not too smart about magic and spells," Matthias admits, "but once upon a time I saw some mages make an ice bridge over a river, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. We'll have to find another way to block the trapdoor, or just keep a close watch down there. Say, could you at least cast a little light down into the gloom so we can see if there's anything there? Not too much that it can be seen outside our little hut here, but..." The ranger puts his hand on his bedroll, but waits for Midge's answer - he wants to see whatever is below them. To the Pig, Matthias says, "You two are closer to eye level for me, and since no one else but Lady Nerwen can understand you, I figured we probably make the best pair. And speaking of some mages, I wonder what is happening with Lady Purpearl? I thought we were friends after our travels with the circus, but recently I'm not sure I know her...." Quote
Zepher Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 Midge casts light down into the darkness. There is a little tunnel at the end of a short downwards climb. It appears, as Bert said, old - part of the original construction of the house. "I don't know if we have time for exploring," says Bert nervously. OoC: Masked, since the other players are not yet asleep I had to skip that part about the wine - I didn't want to change "when" you asked it, but I also don't want to force the other players to go to sleep. Chromeknight Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Nerwen nods as the watches ar divided. She takes out her bedroll and sits beside it meditating, which for her is better than sleeping. Quote
StickFig Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Matthias' disappointment at not going exploring in the tunnels is tempered by his exhaustion. The gnome shoves his bedroll against a wall, leans back against it to rest, and begins to snore quietly within seconds. Quote
Zepher Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 The heroes, having discovered multiple cracks in their defenses in the safe house, decide to do absolutely nothing about them and go to sleep instead. Midge attempts to cover for the heroes' mass incompetence by taking up a seat on the trap door. Alexis and Midge take the first watch, along with a nervous but smiling Morrison. "I got some," Midge tells her as he uncorks a bottle. They pass it back and forth for a short time, watching the silent night go by. All of a sudden, Midge cries out in pain and shock. The heroes spring up! "F*cking!" cries Midge, hopping up and ripping open the trap door. A knife is embedded in it, shoved up from below. Midge is bleeding out of the back of his left leg. In the darkness, there is no one. Before the heroes can finish their investigation of the door, there is a whistling sound something flying through the air! A dagger passes through the obvious and incredibly dangerous crack in the stone wall that Matthias looked out on the street through. It catches Morrison in the throat. His eyes widen, and that is the last thing he does in his entire life because moments later he topples over, dead beyond dead. The heroes don't even have time to consider that new development! Through the hole in the roof - something the heroes didn't even consider, but how would all that moonlight getting in through a solid roof? - comes a blur of red robe: a Red Assassin. She lands on Crowley, sinking a dagger into his back. He falls to the floor, and she looks at the heroes, lips tight, eyes cold. "I'm here for Thistlethorp. StickFig Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) Sweet, got encouraged, not that it will help hahahaha. So, I've been doing a lot of thinking, and it's been a long time since my last statistics course, but I don't thinking having all of us attack is the best option, even given Passive Special IV. It comes down to expected value. Current Battle Order Alexis: 2/9 chance to die = 0.22 Total Expected Deaths Nerwen: 2/9 chance to die = 0.44 Total Expected Deaths Midge: 1/3 chance to die = 0.77 Total Expected Deaths Matthias: 1/3 chance to die = 1.11 Total Expected Deaths > Bert: 2/9 chance to die = 1.33 Total Expected Deaths Thistlethorp: 1/3 chance to die = 1.67 Total Expected Deaths Samuel: 1/3 chance to die = 2 Total Expected Deaths Russel & Pigley: 1/3 chance to die = 2.33 Total Expected Deaths Passive Special IV: 1/8 chance to kill = 2.46 DEATHS EXPECTED THIS ROUND Suggested Battle Order Nerwen: 2/9 chance to die = 0.22 Total Expected Deaths Alexis: 2/9 chance to die = 0.44 Total Expected Deaths > Bert: 2/9 chance to die = 0.67 Total Expected Deaths Passive Special IV: 1/3 chance to kill = 1 DEATH EXPECTED THIS ROUND TL;DR: If we tone down the number of players attacking, we lose fewer party members. There are only two essences available, so at no point should Samuel or CrabPig ever attack. Zeph - More questions: Does Guardian Angel stop the Passive Specials? Matthias readies his weapon but the Assassin's easily apparent speed and skill shocks him back to reality. This is a foe that is very likely to take his life. The gnome steps back from the fight and motions several of the others to do likewise. "Watch out - if you get nicked you're dead!" Standing against the wall, he pops open a Mead and slings the liquid into Fenral's mouth as best he can - she's going to need it. "Sir Pigley, could you two give Nerwen a Mead?" "Midge, I'm sure Bert could use a little liquid courage as well!" Suggested Battle Order - See V2.0 below. Matthias: Switch Dapper Hat for Quickdraw Quiver Matthias: Mead vs. Alexis Ruffers & Pigley: Mead vs. Nerwen Midge: Mead vs. Bert Nerwen: Sword vs. Assassin Alexis: Fan vs. Assassin > Bert: Halberd vs. Assassin Samuel: Heal vs. anyone who gets hit Thistlethorp: Heal vs. anyone who gets hit Ruffers & Pigley: Phoenix Essence vs. anyone who dies (or Crowley? Can we even try to save him? I think it's not a good move strategically but....) "Sure we can hit her! Are you sure that we should leave Crowley though? He looks... very bad." "It is a great shock to to see a friend killed... we were supposed to give this Phoenix Essence to Lady Nerwen as a gift, but... we will do what you think is best." Chromeknight Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) Apologies all, Winter break just ended so I'm back on campus and work is burying for a little while. Nerwen hears the gnome's bass voice take charge of the watchmen and the others. The cowl she still wore let her follow the conversation with Ruffers and Pigley also. She spoke gently in reply. Assassins often excel in taking out lone targets, but have difficulty with large groups of defenders. <Ruffers, please hold that essence for the moment. It would be a shame to be defending master Thistlethorp but have him fall anyway.> Suggested Battle Order V2.0 Matthias: Switch Dapper Hat for Quickdraw Quiver Matthias: Smelling Salts vs. Alexis Alexis: Nostrum vs. Nerwen Ruffers & Pigley: Mead vs. Alexis Midge: Mead vs. Bert Nerwen: Sword vs. Assassin Alexis: Fan vs. Assassin > Bert: Halberd vs. Assassin Samuel: Heal vs. anyone who gets hit Thistlethorp: Heal vs. anyone who gets hit Ruffers & Pigley: Phoenix Essence vs. anyone who dies (or Crowley?) Not sure if you've added up the numbers properly. Matthias: not attacking Nerwen (lucky): roll 6&6 dead: 1/36 odds. roll 5&6, 6&5 or 5&5, 1/3 chance of dead, 3/36*1/3=1/36 odds. Total 1/18 odds Alexis: roll 6 dead: 1/6 odds p, roll 5, 1/3 chance of dead, 1/6*1/3=1/18 odds. Total 4/18 odds. Plus 1 in 4 chance of random dying at end of round. I agree though. Getting Angels up ASAP is key. Don't forget Samuel is a Paladin too! What would mess with us is using a PE this round and only having one left who gets randomly dropped, We can't afford to use the PE this round. It grates, I hate NPCs dying but with only 2PEs and so much chance of KOs, we have to choose with NPCs to save much later in the battle. Gurth goth Tel'Quessir! StickFig Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 As Crowley expires, Matthias makes the sign of Orrik, and the movement turns into an arm-thrust as Calmcacil's angel appears. "Everyone, attack!" As he fires the Peashooter, the gnome adds to Samuel, "Paladin, would you assist Lady Alexis? We need her back in this fight quick." Matthias: Peashooter vs. Assassin Matthias: Peashooter vs. Assassin Rules question: is Alexis not Hastened any more because she was KO'd? Zepher Posted August 1, 2014 Author Posted August 1, 2014 OoC: Yes, she is no longer hastened. And apologies again, I removed the dapper hat and took away encouraged because in my head you were trading it out, but you're right, it should stick with you! Quote
Zepher Posted August 2, 2014 Author Posted August 2, 2014 OoC: I'm running the round assuming Alexis will follow the plan and that she would consent to the battle order! Also, knew I should have left her at her original health from 72, but I got soft. "How do you heroes choose who to protect?" Avery asks in a bored voice, at the ready to dodge any attack coming her way. She eyes the angel wearily, but it is clear she knows to not push her luck in front of it. "If you would protect sinless people, I'd never have to kill you. But it's too late for you now, I can only hope the next set of heroes will be smarter." Round Two Assassin Assault Nerwen v. Avery - Guardian Angel/Miss (Guardian Angel) Samuel uses a Phoenix Essence on Alexis Alexis v. Assassin - Hit (65*2=130) Midge v. Assassin - Hit (12+22=34) Matthias v. Assassin - Hit (14) Matthias v. Assassin - Hit (14) Bert v. Assassin - Special Damage (no effect) Thistlethorp heals Bert - Failure Russel & Pigley - Damage (no effect) Russel & Pigley - Critical Hit (([16*2]+18)*2=100) The heroes attack Avery, but she dodges it best she can.
