The gnome nods, eyes still fixed on Thistlethorp, but replies, "I don't think that's necessary unless he resists. I must admit that I'm not certain why these allegations are so grave. Experimentation is the father of invention, and if I'm not mistaken there are Necromancers among the Heroes of the Hall... I suppose grave robbing is a crime, though." Matthias glances at Crowley and Morrison, dead and still warm on the floor, and shudders as his eyes also take in the assassin's bloodsoaked corpse. "I think we should return their bodies to the Watch house, Bert. Would you wrap them up so we can carry them, or do you have something else in mind?"

Absentmindedly, the gnome pulls off the Quickdraw Quiver and brushes off his Dapper Hat before placing it back on his head, perhaps subconsciously trying to look taller and more authoritative to the accused Watchman.

OoC: Did not expect to continue this so soon, pictures will arrive tomorrow!

Thistlethorp knocks Alexis' fan away indignantly, and backs away as Matthias demands his weapons and helmet.

88d3f4fc-e760-42ef-82dd-1b1167d7bb8e_zps97224cf3.jpg

"Oh dear, it seems that you're all being taken in by that assassin's words!"

GuardB.jpg

"Surrender your things, Thistlethorp. Perhaps she was lying with her final breath, but it is something we will have to investigate."

88d3f4fc-e760-42ef-82dd-1b1167d7bb8e_zps97224cf3.jpg

"I can't allow that!" pipes Thistlethorp. "I have been experimenting. But like Matthias said, it is only for the good of everyone! I am just the father of invention. I can protect the guards even better if they're all undead! Just think about it. A group of Necromancers, controlling hoards of undead, patrolling the streets! Think the iron fist we could hold this city in. No more crime! What could possibly go wrong?"

GuardB.jpg

"So you are a necromancer. And you are a part of the Cold Circles. And you chose to not disclose this to the guards."

88d3f4fc-e760-42ef-82dd-1b1167d7bb8e_zps97224cf3.jpg

"Bureaucracy slows everything down," says Thistlethorp condescendingly. "Besides, not everyone is as open minded as I am."

GuardB.jpg

"Grave robbing itself may not be judged hardly, Thistlethorp, but using the Watch as a guise - we cannot allow that. And spending Watchman's lives to protect yourself for crimes you really did commit... I can't allow that either..."

88d3f4fc-e760-42ef-82dd-1b1167d7bb8e_zps97224cf3.jpg

"Oh, but they're not dead! Look!"

And the party does turn... seeing Crowley and Morrison on their feet, blood still leaking from their sides. Morrison's eyes are soulless, his face growing paler by the second. Standing beside them is a increasingly gray Avery, still dribbling blood from her mouth and nose.

88d3f4fc-e760-42ef-82dd-1b1167d7bb8e_zps97224cf3.jpg

"The guards and heroes protected me with great honor, Severan, and though they lost their lives, they did kill the assassin. A good tale, right? Oh dear, I so did want all my friends to live, but now at least you'll be useful to me! I promise I'll dig you up right away and reanimate you, good as new." Thistlethorp's eyes start to glow ice cold blue, and his staff sizzles, and suddenly he looks a little more dangerous. "Besides, I can imagine no greater honor than going to meet the Cold One."

As Vaugh Thistlethorp turns to attack and the bodies around them rise to join him, Matthias is barely surprised; what else would he have expected from a Necromancer? His most present feeling isn't betrayal, either; he's still too tired to feel that. What the ranger does feel is frustration that the party will need to fight the wily assassin again, and that he'll need to look into the faces of Watchmen he once fought alongside as he kills them a second time. Doing his best to pull together for one more fight, he calls out, "Samuel, that fiery blade should cut well against the corpses, although Private Bert is still hurt", and "Master Russel, try to blind them - the Necromancer and Crowley - but stay well back."Once again pulling on his borrowed Quickdraw Quiver and carelessly knocking his Dapper Hat back into the dirt, Matthias puts his back against the wall and lights off the Peashooter at Thistlethorp.

Below battle order is based on my (quite possibly flawed) understanding that only elemental weapons damage undead, and the assumption that Zepher meant to make Avery and Morrison "Undead" like Crowley instead of "Humanoid" and "City Watchman".

Undead Morrison Level 10 City Watchman

Avery the Undead Assassin Level 48 Humanoid *Immune to all effects and Instant Kill*

Suggested Battle Order

> Ruffers & Pigley: Crabspirator vs. Thistlethorp

> Ruffers & Pigley: Crabspirator vs. Undead Crowley

Samuel: Heal vs. Bert

Bert: If healed, Halberd vs. Thistlethorp, otherwise Use Grand Potion

Midge: Axe vs. Thistlethorp

Alexis: Fan vs. Undead Assassin

OoC: Still want to get you guys pictures, still am crunched for time. Sorry about that. I'm sure you can all imagine the end of the summer gets a little packed with all the people you want to see and all the things you meant to do but never got done. Also Pigley gives Russel a power boost I've been ignoring for a while. Whoops! I also totally forgot to add some of the +5 bonuses that the guards should be giving each other, even though I listed them. I ran this round without them, but in future rounds, take note.

The Battle Against the Second Cult Round One

> Ruffers & Pigley v. Thistlethorp - Shield (Mug: No Gold Stolen, [16*3]+19+4-2=69]

> Ruffers & Pigley v. Crowley - Special Damage (Thistlethorp healed for 16 health)

>Matthias changes Hat for Quiver (easy because I failed to switch them in the stats - though I did roll for the hat this time  )

>Matthias v. Thistlethorp - Critical Hit ([2*2]+13-2=15, burning -2)

Samuel heals Bert - Heal (+26 health, -1 ether)

Bert v. Thistlethorp - Miss

Midge v. Thistlethorp - Special Damage (Doomed, -3 ether)

Alexis: Fan v. Undead Assassin - Damage (No Assassination, 48 Damage, Alexis Cursed)

>Nerwen v. Morrison - Critical Hit ([14*2]+30-1=56)

Alexis regains 3 health due to blessed

Alexis loses 3 max health due to cursed

The battle begins swiftly. Russel runs forward to Thistlethorp and blinds the old man. Matthias is able to capitalize on it by firing off a shot. Alexis, however, is still unable to beat her foe, and is sliced by the thin sharp knife of a now Undead Avery.

IMG_2115_zps5bb59e5d.jpg

"Grrrrrr," says Avery, gritting her teeth as blood continues to spill past. "Red Death- I serve no one but the Red Assassins-" but then blood wells up and she can't speak anymore.

IMG_2031_zpsaf028080.jpg

"Better finish this quick."

I also totally forgot to add some of the +5 bonuses that the guards should be giving each other, even though I listed them. I ran this round without them, but in future rounds, take note.

And you keep forgetting Matthias' power bonus as well.

Anyway, I know what you mean about the end of summer. I'm actually leaving tomorrow for a three-week trip through an area where the infrastructure is basically nonexistent so I have no idea what kind of access I'll have. I will do my best to keep up on mobile where it's available and I should be able to get a post in at least every couple of days, but if at any point I can't get something in under the 24-hour limit, Matthias will take suggestions from Chromeknight or Masked.

Matthias begins to wonder if they can win this fight. He pulls a Remedy from his pouch for Midge, but decides to hold off and instead fires twice at Thistlethorp. "Anyone with elemental weapons, attack the undead - that includes you, Midge: how about a spell?" "Blind as many as you can...."

OoC: Finally the pictures I owe you! Nerwen, your health has been fixed by which I mean it has been deducted significantly. Thanks again for your continued honesty, questees!

As the battle continues, Thistlethorp hides behind Avery, who, losing blood at an alarming rate in comparison to her fellow two undead, turns a disgusting gray color. The Red Death and necromancy apparently don't mesh well.

Bert v. Morrison - Critical Hit ([6*2]+20-1=31 Damage)

Blessed restores 3 health to Nerwen and Alexis

Nerwen and Alexis lose 3 max. health due to Cursed

Burning and bleeding continue to work well against the foes

Nerwen swings into battle with Avery, but the Dead Red Assassin cuts her down swiftly by stabbing her sharply in the stomach, and then as she lurches forward, the back. Midge rushes forward and casts a blaze of fire, swinging his axe wildly, dragging Nerwen's prone body to safety. Bert stabs his fellow watchman.

Shield? Special guard? I'm sure you rolled for them, but it's handy to see the rolls noted.

Also if healing harms undead, does milk (which heals and restores ether) remove undead ether also?

Nerwen turns to speak but the words turn into a grunt as the assassins knife pierces her.

Matthias attacks Thistlethorp twice, a primal gnome-scream rending the ears of his allies and enemies alike.

How did Nerwen die? Avery's special doesn't even deal damage, just Doomed.

OoC: Was my mistake! Sorry, I forgot I changed her special upon her death. I keep running these rounds at like 2 AM because that's when I have time (sadly that is not an exaggeration this time around) and while I'm sure you can sympathize, I am equally sure it's an annoyance to correct me every time. So, in conclusion, Nerwen is doomed and at 23 health!

As for the ether question... it sort of comes down to lore, I guess. Undead have "dead health" so "healing" them hurts them, right (for lack of better terms). Do we think that the ether they use is also different than the ether heroes use? Is it "dead ether", is it "negative ether"? I don't know! I'd argue it's the same ether, but I'm willing to listen to other arguments! It's a good idea either way.

Posted

As a lore question, it can be argued either way. Undead is a large catagory and covers diverse things such as raised dead (who, in my opinion shouldn't have ether at all, ether being a expression of a will and soul, neither of which controlled raised undead posess) but it also covers things like vampires and liches, which clearly have magic and a will of their own.

I think the better question is, what is more fun mechanically. What provides more options to mess with QM's carefully crafted monsters and battles? Is it fun to slurp out an enemy's ether preventing some dangerous specials? (Hint, Hel yeah!) Or is it too overpowered, especially since it can't be done to live opponents. Though perhaps an item or consumable that let one do that would be fun too!

Will we start seeing *immune to ether reduction* alongside *immune to sealed*? Or should it be the same immunity?

Enemies can and have stolen ether before. Let's let heroes in on that action.

Nerwen struggles to her feet again. Speaking to Matthias she winks and says

Elves are tougher than they look.

She nods at the undead Avery.

My turn.

Nerwen - sword vs. Avery

Also, burning should totally do double damage against the icy Thistlethorp!

(Though I understand why it doesn't!)

Chromeknight, I didn't know that ether implied life. Is that actually the history of the word? I've never really thought about why we use it or where it's from. I still don't think that it should function that way, but simply because I do think of lore reasons it wouldn't make sense. Though the idea for an ether reducing item is a cool one - maybe I'll see if I can't get that to you at some point in the quest. You guys are, on a side note, over half-way at this point... but still have quite a while to go.

I also was considering test-driving a more complex burning this quest (deals double damage to those with weakness to water but a water spell removes it) but was afraid it would be too complicated and cut it last minute.

If by some miracle Avery dies before everyone has attacked, whoever's left should attack Crowley; if he dies too, then Morrison.
