The designer of the original project has stated that she wanted to show that scientists are not all white old men in white lab coats. If you have ever been in a research laboratory you might be surprised to find that most scientists dress pretty casually. I am in my laboratory right now and I am wearing jeans and a red hoodie.

Yes, it's been mentioned. I think the dilemma is that the CMF version was a typical one, but she didn't actually come with longer torso from Alatariel's suggestion. Now it's changed to a casual look and that idea is unable to come out. Sounds like a pity.

I wonder when the exo suit will first make its appearance as that's two sets now that we're approved after it and yet released before it...

Hopefully if it's coming in August then we should start seeing some leaked images in early july and a full press release near the middle of the month.

Where is problem ? Back years ago (in last decade ?) was City VERY masculine and in all sets are a male figures only. World without females.... It was very strange.... and unrealistic.

They weren't all male. You just assumed they were as they weren't wearing lipstick or had large breasts and / or curved hips.

Regarding the choice of torsos, of all the torsos LEGO currently produces that are specifically identifiably "female", those 2 are the 2 that are probably the most appropriate for the set. Can anyone suggest other specifically-female torsos LEGO makes that would have been a better choice? (bearing in mind that the torsos cant be from any licensed theme including LEGO movie, cant be from a CMF and cant have ties to a specific retail product line such as Arctic)

I can't wait for this one - my favorite Ideas set so far. I'll be buying one for myself and one for my daughter.

Laugh. I went to the Lego store last night and found myself looking for it though I KNOW that's unrealistic.

While I was there I built 3 minifigures for $10. And thought about the fact that this set has 3 minifigures. So that's half the cost right there.

We have seen CMF torsos and recolors used in other sets? And the Librarian torso would have been perfect. Or the female torso from Pharaohs Quest.

I assume that those discontinued prints wouldn't be brought back. TLC still has some TLM and City prints in their stock and this costs less.

I personally suggest making a uniform for all three minifigures (similar with the pic in reply #110) in order to make all exclusive to this set.

I get the point of the IDEAS original designer that most scientist wear casual clothes. So they made an exclusive print for the chemist which wear lab coats.

But I find the inclusion of very common female torsos disappointing. The one with the scarf is most disappointing since I believe it was first created as a flight attendant and also used as a sales clerk. The torso with the necklace just seems very overused... especially by me since I made that the uniform for my modular bike shop.

Sexist drivel.

Deliberately exclude women from a set? Questionable practice.

Deliberately exclude men from a set? Yup, it's the same.

Sexism isn't just thinking women are inferior - it's treating them as inferior by believing they can't cope without men 'giving them a hand'

This set is pandering and offensive - don't worry girls, the men have made a set for you too!

Women can cope just fine without 'positive discrimination' - they have all the ability they need, they just need patronising practices to stop

There, there love, no long words to confuse your pretty head! Go be a scientist like a man!

Of the sets I have, they nearly all have female minifigs.. the Town Square has a female street sweeper, the Garbage truck has a female truck driver, the Ambulance has a female EMT...good grief..

I think this set would be a good buy for all the glassware parts, for me.. :-)

Okay, how is this "men giving women a hand"? Lego is addressing that most of their city and non licensed sets, have an unequal sex ratio. This isn't sexism. I'm not even sure where you would get that idea? How many all-male sets have we had? Just because the first set that's what, not the friends theme, that excludes a male fig it's sexist? So what's the problem with having just working females in a set? Should girls have to buy the Friends theme in order to be equally represented? I can't tell you how many city sets show only men working. Out of the 27 current city sets on Lego.com that feature female minifigs, only 14 of those are women actually shown working at a job. And there are only 27 city sets out of the 66 sets that feature women. AND only ONE of them features more than one female minifig. That's very sad. (I could've counted wrong but I don't think I did...) Anyway, I think this set is great because it shows more girls in the working environment and I for one will definitely be picking up one of these sets and hope to see a more equal gender ratio in future Lego sets!

This is one of the stupidest posts I've seen on this topic. Firstly, it's bizarre that you think this is "a set made by men for women" since, like ALL Ideas/Cuusoo sets, it is based on a user-submitted idea—in this case, a design made BY a female scientist who wanted to see more people like her represented in sets. The final set is not significantly different from her proposal, so this isn't at all a case of patronizing men deciding they know what women want in a set—unless you're alleging that the majority of supporters on Cuusoo were closet sexists. Secondly, there's nothing wrong with a set that includes all male figures OR a set that includes all female figures, especially for a small set with three figures each (after all, if you pick three names from a hat with an equal number of men and women, it's not even that unlikely that you'd end up with three of one or the other). What IS wrong is that there are so many sets with all male figures in so many of Lego's themes, yet outside of the Friends theme a set with three women and no men is practically unheard of. This set does a great job of starting to correct that imbalance.

i dont care if it's males or females. the star of the show is the dinosaur skeleton IMO.

I think im buying this set to fill up the empty rooms i have in my custom modulars. these will be great furniture/interior filler

The skeleton is nice, but I am also a big fan of the telescope and star chart. Astronomy is sometimes another hobby of mine. The minifigs are not too bad. They are all different enough. So far, it seems liked the Lego Idea's/Cuusoo sets have had also come with booklets that provide a little more than just the instructions. The Ghostbusters one is pretty nice, as is the box. I wonder how this one will be presented?

Posted (edited)

Anyone else notice the tiling seems to be black and white on the box but white and grey in the final product?

But apart from that looks like a nice little set

Meh. Simply meh. Out of all the fantastic ideas submitted, three little vignettes were chosen? Ugh... In my opinion, this set is pretty bland.

Agreed, but I think the blandness of this set is due to the fact this idea wasn't submitted and supported for its creativity or originality but for the political message it carries.

I don't want to start a discussion about feminism here but I just don't think TLG should tolerate (let alone release) submissions like these for the same reason they don't tolerate set ideas based on politics, religion or race. A toy company shouldn't be dealing with ideologies which are dividing the society into different classes or groups.

Well at least they were smart about it and apparently erased all mentions of feminism and genders.

Most people in this thread seem to like it for all kinds of reasons, creativity and originality included.

Is there an approximate element count for this set? Apologies if it's been posted anywhere, I haven't seen it.

I also noticed the brick separator inclusion - perhaps this is going to be standard in Ideas sets, or perhaps it is because of all the little tiles on the plate, as is seen in the Minecraft sets.

First, it's arguable Lego itself has been perpetuating this in its toy line; secondly, I thought it was a nice little set from day one, not least because of the fossil. I'm sure some people are wound up by what the set was up against, but it's worth noting most of those wouldn't have been made. Sherlock is ultimately about murder and so doesn't fit Lego; BTTF has already had an Ideas set; Zelda would require a Nintendo license (good luck with that), and so on.

Well at least they were smart about it and apparently erased all mentions of feminism and genders.

According to its creator, the intro is in part about the set being inspired by her being a scientist, and it's good that the set in itself is branded in the sense that it doesn't draw attention to the gender. The figures just are.

Can't imagine this set being popular among the average shopper

Judging by the response I've seen elsewhere, especially from women and parents with young daughters, I imagine the opposite. The question, though, will be whether Lego makes the set available or does something similar to the Curiosity Rover and winks it out of existence in double-quick time.

I'm expecting it to sell out fast. Olivia's workshop sold fast, and the CMF female scientist was popular too
