Looks like I'm in the minority, but I really think that this idea is stupid. They are trying to get the children away from the tablets, so why include a software that needs one in the first place?! For me, LEGO is all about not sitting in fornt of the computer the whole day and it should stay that way! Yeah I know, technology, the inevitable thing in every future product ... :(

I think this is a great idea. Going back and forth from the virtual thing to the real one and then back again is a great way to get kids --and adults too-- who are used to spending a lot of time in the virtual world but not that much time in the real one. How many of us have spent "just another hour" surfing the net instead of building things with Lego? Even when LDDing, sometimes we just let time goes by instead of moving to the "real" thing. Once people are used to going for the real bricks, I believe it will be better to keep them there. It seems like a long-term strategy to me and I bet it will work just fine. Sometimes all you need is just that little push to go for the real bricks and Lego Fusion might just be it.

I think the idea is that childrens minds have adapted to our digital world and thus they dont separate digital from physical play. This is a cool way to meld the two worlds and create a cohesive play environment for kids. If I was a child I would have been all over this.

Looks pretty good think my kids will like this. Hopefuly it will work as promised and won´t be too expensive.

It's hard to say. There have been more and more things technologies can do. One day it will not just be virtual and physical, there could be a new aspect between the two. Maybe all bricks and figures would be able to move and interact by themsevles just like Mindstorm does.

Simply judging from the tablet idea, I think it should appeal those who plays clicks more than bricks, not the traditional brick lovers. Our new generation is addicted to those things so it may bring positive affects to them.

No cross-theme parts usage involved and in the short preview/demo certain limits were mentioned about parts not belonging to the sets.

Yeah, not surprising. I remain both sceptical and interested. It's just the first step and there is still room for progress to reach the ultimate goal to fully transfer all freedom and creativity from physical to virtual. For now only judging from the building part, the phsyical wins over virtual. Edited by Dorayaki

I think this sounds great, and I'm excited. Of course, I also thought LEGO Universe was terrific and it didn't last, so what do I know...

No as there are limits to each theme/set, only those that come with them plus some basic bricks are identifiable to the app. Anything else used that the app can't recognize will be replaced by something similar.

AC

Will there actually be a different version of the app for each specific set, though, or just one app that works with all four? If the latter, that indicates it will likely at least recognize a larger variety of bricks that is found in any one of the four, since presumably each set will have a few pieces found in none of the others (this in addition to those basic bricks that might not necessarily be in the sets, but that are really common and, well, basic)...

I think they should focus on their competences and not drift off to far, which was fatal in the past (legoland parks, computer games, lego-clothing).

I sort of agree with you, but I think it may have potential, for instance the 'drive your brick-built LEGO car' one sounds interesting. I highly doubt they will support bricks that aren't in the set though. I will wait and see if I can find any videos from people who have actually bought the set before buying one.

While they've had a few failures in those areas, most of the video games have been successful, and I believe the parks are as well. I know I for one am certainly grateful to have them (games, parks and clothing alike).

Just had time to watch the new videos, it's clear to see that the apps allow you to transform 2D to 3D and it turns out pretty well. Hope that we'll see more progress in the future.

Offtopic, it's alittle sexist speaking, but despite it's nice to have an app for Friends, I found it disturbing to see the fourth ad Resort reluntantly assigned to be played by girls while all previous three apps feature the same boy. The LEGO commercial issue has been discussed for a long time, and this problem is obvious when Friends should be a member of the "matrix team". It would be better to see girls and boys play together in all ads of this series.

I saw this at Toys R Us today too, in line for the 'Ghost' microbuild. The most exciting thing about 250 pieces with no minifigs for $35 was the troll on the cover of the castle set.

Both the Battle Towers and Create & Race sets indeed lack figures, but the Town Master set does include a minifigure, and the Resort Designer one includes a minidoll.
