6971 Inter galactic command base. It has a great space station feeling and all the elements needed to make some great alternate versions. It really doesn't get more classic or well designed.

Blacktron is a close second though. I really don't think there is a Blacktron set I don't like though. The original Blacktron/Space Police series is to me the pinacle of LEGO space.

mmm... Most definitely the message intercept base for me...

That base just looks fantastic. And I've always loved the color scheme of the original blacktron. Black and trans-yellow. They just look great. I never quite got why they made them white afterward...

And because it brings back all those fond memories I have of me looking at it so longingly when I went to the toy shop for christmas when I was a kid... :'-)

I voted for the 483/920 Alpha-1 Rocket Base as its one of my favourite CS sets that I still own from my childhood. Always loved fuelling up my vehicles and sending the rocket flying

I voted 6971 Inter galactic command base, but mostly out of nostalgia. I loved those old crater plates. This is the first time I've thought about either Blacktron or Space Police in more than ten years...I didn't realize I missed them!

I voted the Ice oddyssy station, or whatever its called. It just calls out to me, I like the use of bright, catchy colors, it has those nice mini vehicles, nice big visorplates, raised baseplate, and lots of deatail!

I voted #6970.Beta Station was the first Space Station in my colection and it's the only one that I have twice!

I can almost remember every detail about the good times spent "realy playing" with this set!

Argh! Voted for the wrong one! (Intergalactic Command Base instead of Message-Intercept Base).

Anyway... I was born too late for the old Classic Space bases, and I've never quite worked up the need to go track them down since they're so small yet expensive (though I do think they're very cute). The bases I actually owned as a kid were the Ice Planet, Spyrius and Exploriens bases, but my best friend had a 6987 Message-Intercept Base and it was the Holy Grail of Space sets as far as I was concerned :-$ I've just managed to find one for myself on Bricklink and it's gorgeous! So many clever areas and mechanisms. (And it has the most insane alternative designs on the box... a gigantic walker, a huge spaceship, some kind of ground-crawling insectoid monstrosity...)

Fun side story: Australia, like many countries, has its own unique names for Lego sets. Most of the names aren't nearly as odd or interesting as the American ones. When I was growing up my friend and I always referred to the 6987 as the "Blacktron Black Star Base". For many years I've assumed that we'd made a childish mistake, and that the real name was something dull like "Blacktron Star Base". But... a few weeks ago I got hold of a 1989 Australian catalogue, and it's true! The 6987 really was called the Black Star Base! I feel vindicated X-D

I must say I'm surpised that the 6987 is so far out in front. I love the Blacktron 1 colour scheme, but to me , it just doesn't work at all well with the old classic space grey baseplates.

well i'm not surprised to be honest.

1) it's a large base, with a landing platform, a small hallway and several radar stations..

2) the colour combination was completely different from all the stuff before... let's face it, the blue and grey was kinda old

3) the MFs were great too

4) cool transparent parts

5) some real cool features that looked very sophisticated at that time, like the roof that opens up, or the radar station that moves away from the platform

6) there was so much mystery in this set, as if a mf could easily suddenly appear out of a hallway or something... for the first time i had this feeling this was a spacestation that was far more than a classic rocket launcher

The key to any great set is that it should feel bigger and more impressive than it actually is. for me, this set is 6087. The double baseplate configuration along with the connecting corridor make this set a genuine winner. When I was a kid, I always liked sets that I could envision inhabiting. Castles with hidden passages or space stations with elaborate layouts were always a favourite. Too many of the other stations are simply too straightforward. With the Message-Intercept Base I could always see the minifigs going about a variety of activities. It just catches the eye in a way that no other space station has.

Blacktron I was and is awesome, had to go the MIB. Second I would have voted for the Lock-up Isolation. It's sort of unique and has a very cool vibe as well ... plus I never had one when I was young and now I do :-D

6930 Space Supply Station was my first space station that i owned (long gone now after my dark age) but my favourite was always 493/926 Space command centre as i missed this when i first got into lego as a child.

I voted Ice Station Odyssey because I'm partial to Ice Planet and my other choice, the Intercept base, is getting way too many votes. (yeah, it was good, but not THAT good)

EDIT: Oh my, topic revival. My bad.
