elleana Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 With all the speculation going on in the Modular rumors thread, one thing that keeps popping up is a museum. Which I agree would be a very good modular. Egyptian, etc had all been done though, and one day I was staring at my Advent Calendar bits and bobs when the idea hit me - why not do a Star Wars themed museum? I had the further 'brilliant' idea of basing the idea on the Museum of Natural History building in NYC, which looks something like this. Enough backstory, presenting... The Rebel Alliance on one side, and the Galactic Empire on the other, with Yoda welcoming visitors and the Death Star looming over everything. Front Door. Birds' eye view of the ground floor. The Rebel half - Millennium Falcon, and you can't really make them out but that's Han and Leia The Empire half - Star Destroyer and a mini Imperial shuttle Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. The Emperor is not pleased... Han Solo hanging in Carbonite on the way upstairs Upstairs, the Rebel half These are not the droids you are looking for.. It's a trap! X-Wing and pilot Tie Fighter and pilot AT-AT, Snowtrooper and Darth Maul Somewhat out of place in between the Grand Emporium and the Green Grocer. It needs a town square of its own to lord over. [Apologies for somewhat out of focus photos. I didn't quite realize how hard it would be to photograph inside the walls once everything was up. And of course I was too lazy to take down some walls just to take photos..] Comments and critiques welcome please. Always looking to improve! Quote
droomangroup Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Great idea, it's a cool way to put Star Wars into the modular town. Why didn't you go all the way back to the rear edge of the plate? seems like more interior space would have been nice. Still, it's very cool. Quote
lightningtiger Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 AWESOME cross-over idea 'elleana'........Brick On in your city with the Force 'elleana' ! Quote
Only Sinner Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I like the idea of a Star Wars museum. I would try to get a job at a place like that. Pretty good layout on this MOC and it's good to see those silly AC micro builds good for something! Quote
niteangel Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 This is an interesting idea! Putting the mini-builds into a modular building, everything fits perfectly! :D I think a museum should be bigger in terms of interior spaces. Usually there is one big space and then some smaller rooms, for different kinds of exhibits. You already did so, but it may be better if you have one double-volume (atrium) and then rooms on one side. But that's minor. It is just a reorganization of space to make the space more useable. One more suggestion, why not try another floor tile color scheme so that it gives a scheme in different exhibition room? May be interesting! Quote
ResIpsaLoquitur Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 A few thoughts: - Maybe some more decorations on the roof. You don't want the roof to be TOO busy, but a midi-sized model of an X-Wing or something else on the roof as an attraction would be good. - Some model environments? You could have a small Dagobah or Tatooine or something to give it a real museum feel. - If you own Palace Cinema, give it some custom Star Wars stickers or have a scene from Lego Star Wars playing on the screen. Fishee Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Great job! Awesome idea. How about a cantina cafeteria? Quote
eurotrash Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I like it! It's a good idea and I love the interior displays, but that facade on the front needs something to make it pop - an exhibit like the Star Wars theme would have something that really stands out. How about an X Wing mounted on the front? or orbiting the Death Star above using a simple technic gear and radius?. Or how about Legohaulics excellent lettering from the recent Iron Builder competition https://www.flickr.com/photos/legohaulic/14101321745?, or a giant sized Darth Vader helmet? Thanks for sharing it with us! Quote
rollermonkey Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 For a color pop, often museums have large banners on the front for the exhibit within. Something like the movie posters on PC, but turned out 90* to look like banners might be a nice touch. Quote
elleana Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Thank you for the kind words everyone Great idea, it's a cool way to put Star Wars into the modular town. Why didn't you go all the way back to the rear edge of the plate? seems like more interior space would have been nice. Still, it's very cool. I forget the math, but I made it such that the interior floor area was some sort of regular number. And also typically the standard one-sided modulars are not built all the way to the end (though I realise the corner ones are). I am going to rebuild my entire town with brick-built roads, and shift my modulars over to plates instead of baseplates. I'll figure out what to do once I'm ready to move this over. This is 32 x 48 studs, I was considering 32 x 64 but it will probably become too big. As it is I ran out of LBG bricks twice, had to wait for more from BL before I could continue. To have an atrium on one side with rooms on the other would make it asymmetrical though, not sure if I could live with that. A few thoughts: - Maybe some more decorations on the roof. I thought about that but I concluded that having other things on the roof would make it too 'busy'. I think I like how the roof how it is. A diorama would be cool - I'm thinking Hoth! - but I ran out of space real fast! Maybe I should consider 32 x 64. I do have Palace Cinema, but am not quite a fan of custom stickers Great job! Awesome idea. How about a cantina cafeteria? Again, no space :( I like it! Kristel Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 This is a great idea, and nicely executed too! I agree with Eurotrash that the front facade needs something and an X-wing would be perfect. Quote
TheStig Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Great idea, but i think it's too small for star wars models. Quote
Faefrost Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Under the heading of life imitating art. George Lucas announced this morning that Chicago will get the real world Star Wars museum. It's comming in 2018. Quote
BEAVeR Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I love it! you've combined very fine real world architecture with nice Star Wars elements. The things like the Rebel and Emprial side work well, especially since it's a recurring theme on the inside and the outside. And things like that Death Star (I can already see some text rotating around it! Or it could be used for laser effects!) and the carbonite Han Solo in the hallway are very much on their place. My only complaint would be to get a more thematic seperation between the two floors: you had a perfect chance to divide between original trilogy and prequel trilogy there... But you've created a succeeded museum and a unique place to display your micro models. So great job in bringing two worlds together for an awesome MOC. Well done! And this deserves a blog: Keep up that great building! Quote
Venunder Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 A very good idea to get Star Wars into "real" world Lego. If a little bit Geeky. :) I am planning something similar based around a Toy Store. My museums and Art galleries are going to be bringing my Dinosaurs, Romans, Pirates etc into the Modern city. Quote
