zux Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 If you change the pitch, I am pretty sure that the worm gear will not work as good. More friction, mainly. And a good worm gear already makes a lot of friction. :-s Hmm, I think it will have same friction, but the load would be distributed to more gears making connection stronger. Quote
Anio Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Lego confirmed that the part will be discontinued as it does not fill the expectations. Quote
Richard Dower Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 So could these parts become rare/valuable in the future?....i have a few of them from spare parts. Quote
D3K Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 That is a shame, as they fill some unique roles, working in some applications where the standard 2L one won't fit. I regret not buying more than five of them Quote
Anio Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 So could these parts become rare/valuable in the future?....i have a few of them from spare parts. Really ? It is what you take from this information ? :-/ That is a shame, as they fill some unique roles, working in some applications where the standard 2L one won't fit. I regret not buying more than five of them There are plenty of them on Bricklink. It is cheap. Quote
jantjeuh Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 People are already buying them up in large quantities on Bricklink. I've got 6, that should be plenty for MOC'ing purposes. Quote

Seeing as this is a part with unique properties, able to be mounted in certain ways the other worm gear cannot, it will fall into the same category as the pneumatic cylinder brackets, albeit hopefully not that crazy! dhc6twinotter Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 (edited) I wonder what part of it fails to meet expectations? My guess is the ends crack, much like the u-joints. Perhaps TLG could make the ends more like an axle connector, although I don't know if such a design would provide enough clearance for a 24t gear on the worm teeth. I just bought a few off bricklink to use on my forwarder project. Hopefully it will eliminate some of the backlash that is occurring. Edited July 14, 2014 by dhc6twinotter Quote
Bricktrain Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 From my experience with it, on small gears it is okay but on larger gears like the 24t it doesnt make enough contact and it clicks as the ends of the screw contact the teeth on the gear and can lock up. It is a shame hopefully they can improve it and rerelease it, it is useful. Quote
GoldVillage Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I was expecting and waiting for a mini 1 stud worm gear (could be very useful) now it most likely wont happen :( Quote
SNIPE Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 (edited) I'd say it's still a worm gear even though it has one tooth , all worm gears are considered to be '1 tooth' anyhow so the ratio is X:1. worm gears can drive one another without needing spur gears, this acts like a linear actuator, and they can be used with gear strips and the technic double bevel gears. Zerobricks Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I was expecting and waiting for a mini 1 stud worm gear (could be very useful) now it most likely wont happen :( It cant be...because than you need to use bushes when using bigger gears and those bushes get stuck in gears, Quote
SNIPE Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 (edited) Agreed, the 2L worm is an ideal size and you can add half bushes so it fits in a 3L gap. However a 1L thick worm gear could be useful as then you don't need to use studded bricks to connect it to 12, 20 ,28 or 36 tooth gears. however will an axle even fit through such a narrow worm gear? maybe we should just have a spacer that lets us space studless bricks into studded geometry and solve more problems with one idea. Superkalle Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Agreed, the 2L worm is an ideal size and you can add half bushes so it fits in a 3L gap. The reason TLG wanted to go for 3L is what it would fit the modern odd-module-based Technic system better. But for us AFOLs, I don't think it matters - we could use a 2L and some bushings to solve it, I agree to that. Quote
Paul Boratko Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Was there an issue with this part in any of the 2014 sets..? I am wondering if there was a problem during the development of one(or some) of the new 2015 models that were using this part..? Quote
mzoli Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 (edited) Here is a complete article of the Worm-saga: http://www.technicbr...lying-away.html I would add one interesting thing: the 2 pullbacks' A models do not use any worm, it's reserved for the B model, where it is used for decorating function not for gearing. Maybe this is the reason that there are several pieces available on BL. Edited July 16, 2014 by mzoli Quote
Superkalle Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I think it pretty much sums up what we deduced in this topic too. Quote
