Like the set and will probably buy a couple...

But I don't understand the love for it...

The original design looks like someone was just trying to use up spare parts - as it falls to bits when touched it's hardly a great piece of design work. It has no real link to any existing theme and no new parts. So, why the love?

This set will appeal to hard core lego fans but has little mass appeal - it's hardly Ecto 1. People seem to think this will shift more copies than 50 Shades of Gray. What possible rationale could be used to support that view?

Again, like the set. Think it will be a fun display piece - but it is hardly a sand crawler or ecto 1. If people think this is awesome, well - shop@home might have a few other things you'll like...

As far as kids are concerned, it's an awesome mech with green Bennies, what's not to love? Even disregarding any mass appeal it might have, Classic Space is so loved among the older (and even some of the younger) builders that these things will fly off the shelves.

Great looking model. Definately getting one to build and perhaps a second to keep BNIB. But I'm not sure it will be much of an investment. TLG continue to produce lots of 'mechas' in their regular line-up, so I don't think this set has the uniqueness or rarity of a set like say Emerald Night.

eg.

http://brickset.com/sets/6862-2/Superman-Vs-Power-Armor-Lex

http://brickset.com/sets/70707-1/CLS-89-Eradicator-Mech

http://brickset.com/sets/70008-1/Gorzan-s-Gorilla-Striker

None as cool as the Exosuit of course, but a continual supply of similar new sets will certainly sap aftermarket demand.

So the exo suit might only get a single production run, why lego why. This will also be the reason we could not have the parts in there best color because lego will have limmits based on how many they will sell. The fact that it might sell out will mean it is even more likly too as people buy them for investment and becuase they dont want to miss out.

The plan right now is for a single production run, just like all the other Cuusoo/Ideas sets. If it sells well, they'll most likely have a second production run. Also, that's not why the designer was limited on colors, that's due to the fact that each line of sets only gets a certain number of color changes and Ideas sets were already pushing the limit with BttF and Ghostbusters.

Cuusoo/ideas gets less color changes than other sets because they make and sell less than normal lines, but if Lego made more and sold them in more stores which did happen with BttF and Ghostbusters then they could have more color changers but I think this will sadly be more like the rover and that sold out are they making more?

I wont get this set, but it looks very well done (as was the original proposal). I dont mind the arm-barrels, they look metallic enough, though its a shame light bley wasnt available. I wonder whether a way to get around the color clash would be to have the surrounding parts in dark bley, and maybe make most of the arms in that color - if dark bley is availabe for the part.

The green CS spacemen are the cream (or icing, if you will) on the cake, with the turtle-bot (or robo turtle?) being the cherry on top.

Yeah I had the same thought too that if they can't have barrels in the color they wanted why not change the color of parts either side so that the barrels dont stand out

Anyone seen edge of tomorrow, a few exo suits in that

This set includes silver parts, which due to their reflective nature can represent an infinite number of possible shades of grey. Therefore, mathematically, it should sell infinitely more copies than 50 Shades of Gray. You can double-check my math but I am fairly certain you will arrive at the same result.

This year, there is quite a lot of competition in terms of mech sets: agents, chima, ninjago, and lego movie. I'm not sure this mech will stand out for the kids so it's really for the AFOL.

Yeah... I don't know about that. I wish I could build something like that with my spare parts... :look:

Let's hope that they do make a second run, as I leave for my trip early in the morning on August 1 and get back early September... Picked the wrong day to leave...

Oh Bummer.... I am going to be out ot town on August 1 at BrickFair so trying to purchase this is going to be a beast for me. Really bad timing for the Spacers heading out to Chantilly.

What I gather from reading Mark Staffords posts on the Redit thread, the design team has a limited number of "changes" budgeted per set or theme (for these purposes treat CuuSoo/ Ideas as a single theme). Changes can be thought of as "anything not currently in stock in the parts warehouse". So a part in a new color (or an old color that they don't have anymore of) is a change. A new minifig print is a change. A printed part is a change. Etc. CuuSoo since it is a limited run limited distribution property has a smaller pool of changes available. Because each change is an expense. Each requires allocation of factory time and resources. (And this is not unique to Ideas. Remember the initial modular buildings had no change budget. Cafe Corner was designed using only parts currently in stock. All of the D2C sets tend to have very limited change budgets.)

In this case CuuSoo as a whole has a certain overall budget for changes, and the Ecto 1 burned through a lot of that. Which makes sense as it is probably the more commercial or retail oriented set, which would also see the biggest benefits from some of the changes. Accurate printed Minifigs in it give a greater return in it, than in an unlicensed set like the Research Institute or Exo Suit.

So Mark was left with wasting a change on the barrels or on giving us the nice new green classic spacemen. I think the Minifigs were the better choice overall. People will buy the set just for the new green Benny's and especially the girl Benny. Whereas for a barrel in LBG? Maybe a couple of hundred of the more dedicated AFOLs would focus and fixate on that? (And before anyone shakes their angry little nerd fists in the sky because PROFIT! And BUSINESS! Remember, we want Ideas to be profitable. We want Ideas to be successful. We want the Ideas team to make sound business decisions so the project can grow and thrive and develop to where it can give us bigger and better Ideas. And at least for the present that will mean that they make some conservative decisions. They don't needlessly waste changes. They don't overproduce. Etc. )

Another related quote from Mark on reddit:

The machines that assemble minifigures (put the hands in the arms, clip the arms into the bodies) are all working at maximum capacity every moment of everyday all year. To find a slot to fit in a new 'assembly' - white hands, white arms, white body etc. would cause big issues, and also counts as three colour changes, so I decided to use one that was already in production and just put a new print on it. So, black, blue or green.

(The promo set featuring a white spaceman is a China production from our mini-figure line factory and it's in a different production loop. But it's nice it comes out at this time for those who prefer the white spaceman!http://brickset.com/...eman-Minifigure)

I started collecting light bluish grey barrels for a Psiaki X-Wing and managed to get 2 before I decided to use something else. They will come in very handy now :)

yeah from reading that I am guessing that each "change" basically reflects each step or stage through the factory process that it would need. Each automated sub assembly. Each new color for a part. Each print pass, etc. Basically each time they need to do a setup in the factory. if you read a bit deeper into that whole thread there is also some wonderful insight or information regarding colors and how Lego handles and manages them, and why all pieces are not available in all colors. And also why they could not or would not do the Exo Suit in all LBG. Rather fascinating. And a good reminder that the process of production and logistics is something that gets factored into design, and is much more complex and burdensome than we ever imagine. How complex must it have been to actually design Benny's SSS and bring it through to retail, while still retaining the look and feel of the old school CS?
