Artanis I, I would buy every one of those Futuron figures!

I was a bit apprehensive about how purple might look, but it looks quite nice in your pic! I had a feeling a purple Classice Spaceman would remind me too much off Teletubbies or something, lol.

We have Dark Blue. They're the heavily armored assault troops

Very true! I love these guys.

As great as Armoured Troops are(and would love to get my hands on a few to make an assault squad), IMHO they just don't really fit into CS despite the logo. Maybe I'm just weird but I want my classic spacemen in plain color with breast logo and a normal helmet

I disagree - I've got a little squad of six guarding my 6971 Intergalactic Command Base, so I think they fit in quite well. But I do agree with you that I'd like a plain dark blue Spaceman as well.

I kinda look at it like Star Wars figures… I love a lot of the highly-detailed, highly-posable figures Hasbro's put out over the last 8-10 years, but there's a charm to the classic vintage Kenner figures with (generally) low detail & only 5 points of articulation (fewer, even, than a Lego minifig!). Sometimes 'simple' can be better, but…not always (my first ever minifig was a truck driver--plain red torso, plain red pants, black male hair piece…a little TOO basic). Classic Space is one case where 'simple' works.

I do agree with this! Actually, Kenner vintage SW figures are the only SW items I collect... otherwise, I get burned out quickly (SW Lego included!).

I've yet to be burned out on Lego SW (however, I don't buy nearly as many as I'd like to, and was burned out on the lackluster face-prints so many had until fairly recently), but Hasbro's horrible distribution & assortments burned me on their SW stuff over the last couple years. One of my favorite things in the Customizing section of SW toy sites are the vintage-style customs of characters we never got proper figures of back in the day, like Tarkin or the Rebel Fleet Trooper from Leia's ship. Those really bring the nostalgia…Lego's RFT minifig kinda does the same, it's very simple with the print entirely on the torso and plain light-bley legs, but hits every mark for me (I wish TLG would do the mod many fans do with RFTs, tho, and give 'em small pistols w/ a light-bley half-pin on the barrel, as it looks far more like the DH-17 blasters they used in the movie).

Anyhoo! Back to general sci-fi… I love the Galaxy Patrol CMF, and made sure to get a handful for a little squad. I'd gladly buy sets based on/around him and/or the pink Spacegirl or even white Astronaut from the CMF series (as well as the Blacktron updates from the Space Villain, Evil Mech, and SP3's Rench!). Expands Classic Space (and Blacktron!) nicely into the 21st century!

Just put the GotG Nebula figure next to your spacemen. That gives a fair idea of how purple would look. And heck I don't think there is a color that would look bad in the Futuron scheme.

Just about every colour goes with white & black, even grey!

Only problem with all the differently coloured Futuron minifigs is that not all of the colours go well with each other. Obviously the 4 originals do, along with green and a few others. But the lighter & darker blues don't go great with standard blue etc.

I really like the dark ones myself, those brick colours are quite nice.

I love the classic space logo, and I was very tempted to army build this figure. The thing that has always bugged me is that they gave him a name on the suit. I know its not visible with the armor on, so this is a bit OCD, but if I had a squad, why are they all named Luiz? I'm sure that there is a very cool behind the scenes story explaining the name, but it kept me from buying an army.

Luckily, the Exosuit is going to give me my classic space fix and help to build a crew for my SSS.

It's a clone army!

I can see that as something like a CMF. Which would be hilaious and adorable. Or do a pink or purple female classic space man with broken chin strap. But not so much in a regular play set. Appreciating the joke there requires a certain amount of ummm? life Experience shall we say? Acquired wisdom? Let's put it this way, beyond Benny in the movie to appreciate the broken chinstrap as a gag you almost need to be sporting an AARP card. The kiddies? They would just want to know why their brand new helmet is broken?

Now, I wouldn't say that for sure. I'm just 23 years old and I knew the issue with classic space helmets fairly well even as a child, due to getting pre-owned LEGO at yard sales. Since LEGO (for the most part) never gets destroyed from normal use, it's totally possible for younger fans to learn about older sets, figs, and pieces. They won't be quite such a fountain of knowledge as somebody who lived through that era of set design, perhaps, but knowing what classic space minifigures tend to look like — including their characteristic defect — is not out-of-the-question.

However, in the case of Benny, the broken chin strap was just ONE part of the joke about his age as a minifigure. He also had a faded logo, lots of scratches and dings (not present in the official sets, of course!), and always preferred building in the style of the classic 1980s Space sets he represented. The joke wouldn't be nearly as clear on a figure who had just the broken helmet and wasn't even the same color as any of the actual classic figs — it would just be a sort of confusing imperfection.

Wait... so what is the price for the Exo-Suit? I have an aunt who works at the LEGO store and the catalog there says $50... is that a mistake??

I thought it was rumored to be $35 usd?

New Elementary just posted a review of the Exo Suit! And I'm in it! :P

Congrats! And well done spotting what none of us saw coming.

That article is a fascinating read. Lots of neat info on how involved the Neo Classic Space guys were with this. Plus very interesting to hear about the age, condition and subsequent replacement of the old CS robot arms mold. I think TLG definitely got their monies worth out of that particular set of tooling. That humble space part has been used everywhere.

If you read through that Redit thread Mark Stafford goes into great detail regarding the classic helmets. In summary (and I am sure I am paraphrasing some. Apologies if I don't get it perfectly right)

- the classic space helmets were a flawed part prone to breaking and are considered unacceptable and a safety hazard by today's standards.

- they were replaced with the new style helmets 30 years ago. (Seriously those old helmets predate the dates of birth for a good chunk of the Lego design team that's how long gone they are.)

- the new style helmets have been made in every classic space color so at this point for those who demand consistency between new and old it is actually easier to retrofit the old.

- even if they were to entertain the idea, they would need to re engineer the part so it did not break. So it still would not match the classic helmets.

- just doing Benny's helmet in green would almost be worse. It's made to look broken.

I guess I overlooked that bit, reading the AMA - and I'm well aware of the durability/etc. issues with the old helmets - I know they'll never resurrect the old helmets, but it doesn't hurt to daydream.

That being said, those Futuron minifigs look great in some of the new colors, especially lime green and purple. Here's hoping to a revival of the older designs beyond Benny's Spaceship and the Exosuit.

All of this talk of Classic Space is making me nostalgic. Might have to go dig out the old figures and start on a new MOC. :)

That is one of the Exosuit creator, Peter Reid's custom figs in one of his dioramas. You could reasonably view it as the inspiration or prototype of the new green ones we are getting with the Exosuit.

I like that backpack he made for the green guy there. I may have to make one of those...

There have apparently been some "technical difficulties" with S@H... perhaps AFOLs are inadvertently causing some form of DOS attack.

It's available to Aus now, but didn't show up until a short time ago. If it's available here, it should be available in Europe!

I was going to order my Exo-Suit on the first when I got home from work, but it was already sold out on S@H. So I went out to my local Lego Store and the clerk said they had sold out on the website in two minutes. Luckily for me they still had about seven in stock of the hundred they received.
