Massinissa Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Does anyone know how well Galaxy Squad sold? TLG might be reluctant to release another space theme if GS bombed. Quote
TomKraut Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I don't think GS sold well. It was released in 2013 and I still find a lot of the sets in stores, and at a step discount at that. Still, no one seems willing to buy them (except me apparently, according to Bricklink I own over 5000 pieces from Space sets and all of them are from GS sets). Cheers TomKraut Quote
DPrime Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Even so, there has been a fairly consistent presence of space-themed sets since the mid-'70s. Lego might take a break, but I don't think we've seen the end of them. Quote
AVCampos Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I think I read somewhere some time ago that TLG considers Space an "evergreen" theme, along with City and Castle. Quote
Massinissa Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 You did read that AVC. I read the same thing. But just because theyre going to make new space sets doesnt mean theyre going to make new Classic space sets like Benny's SSS. Quote
Aanchir Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I think I read somewhere some time ago that TLG considers Space an "evergreen" theme, along with City and Castle. Yes. Same with Pirates. But we've been seeing long gaps between Pirates releases lately, and it's starting to seem like the same thing is happening with Castle and Space. Only City seems to consistently rank among the top-selling themes and get new sets every wave. Quote
blarghiflargh Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Honestly I think they should give Peter Reid-style neo-Classic Space a shot. I like most of the Space themes we get but Galaxy Squad was a tad boring for me... loved the look of the minifigs but the humans vs aliens concept is a bit played out IMO. Quote
Massinissa Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I know most of us would truly enjoy a Neo-Classic space theme, but I just dont know how likely that would be, and I also dont know how popular something like that would be outside the Space AFOL community. Quote
danth Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) Yeah, they need to just do it. It's now or never. There's a lot of momentum behind it, with Benny & his Spaceship, the Exo Suit, the Lego Space Book, and the Classic Spaceman with Robot. They're never going to have this much momentum ever again for a (Neo) Classic Space relaunch. It's really this simple: They release a space theme every few years. Would it really hurt them to make the sets blue & grey with yellow windscreens and include the Classic Space symbol? No, it wouldn't. It would be stupid not to. m0dulo Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I know most of us would truly enjoy a Neo-Classic space theme, but I just dont know how likely that would be, and I also dont know how popular something like that would be outside the Space AFOL community. It was popular with kids at one time, and many of those kids became AFOLs because of Benny and his SSS. I can see parents dumping money on CSReboot kits (for the kids, of course ). Maybe the parent builds it, maybe the kid builds it, or maybe they work on something together, and not as a parent helping their kid, but as two FOLs bridging 35 years. For me, I'd love reissued CS sets but I'm realistic. Quote
SMC Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Great points danth and m0dul, I think now is the time and with GS not doing too well why not give this a try, it could be great. Quote

They might be able to get away with a relaunch after the movie sequel, though, assuming Benny and his pals are in it. I sell old toys at a local show and had a bunch of old Classic Spacemen in varied condition - this was a few weeks after the movie came out, and the kids went gaga for them. Seems to me that Classic Space isn't just for AFOLs anymore. :) Quote
TheNerdyOne_ Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 We know that Mark Stafford is currently designing the 2016 space sets, and that they seem to be something new rather than a reboot of Classic Space or something like that. I looks to me like they know that Classic Space is popular, and will probably continue to release the occasional set, but aren't ready to commit to a complete theme. I could definitely see them doing what they did with Minecraft and releasing a few more sets in 2017, and a full line in 2018 or so. The best thing they can do at this point is try to keep the momentum going before releasing the full theme. Quote

danth Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 When was this stated? I think it's a misinterpretation of something Stafford said on Reddit. I remember him talking about designing new sets, but I'm pretty sure he didn't mention Space. Quote

I don't even care if they're blue and grey at this point! Quote
Massinissa Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Is there any way to verify whether this is true or not? Though, 2016 would be a good time to release. GS will have been 3 years old at that point, and thats about when they replace their scifi/castle sets. Quote

I remember him talking about designing new sets, but I'm pretty sure he didn't mention Space. I guess it's true that he's not necessarily talking about Space sets, but judging from the comments he's made I think it's safe to rule out Classic Space for 2016.http://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/29w5q7/exo_suit_side_by_side_original_submission_vs/cip9wf0 Yeah design is normally well ahead of marketing. I'm well into 2016 sets at this point. Ideas/Cuusoo is odd because it can be as little as 6 weeks from finishing the set to getting it out. I only finished the Exo-Suit about three months ago! So fast! http://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/29w5q7/exo_suit_side_by_side_original_submission_vs/ciqhbcc I would love to design for a classic space inspired line, but we also have so many ideas for brand new cool stuff it's hard to be quite so nostalgia driven. Spirit Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) I'm all for new stuff, but I hope they'll drop the boring colour schemes, especially for the transparent parts. I was really annoyed when I saw the trans-clear cockpits of the GS vehicles. That said it, we won't see new space any time soon, so whatever for now... Also, Friends in Space someday? danth Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I'm all for new stuff, but I hope they'll drop the boring colour schemes, especially for the transparent parts. Boy, do I hear you there. Space always had colored canopies. This clear stuff is just weird. Or even worse they could use transparent orange like in Mars Mission. Orange is just not a heroic color, in my opinion. Quote
Massinissa Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 We may not get a CS revival in 2016, but I wonder if they will have some other space set. Then again they neglect to update castle for years at a time, so I guess space isnt that different. Really sad, because at one point space was the cornerstone of TLG. Now its just something they keep going for tradition... And Star Wars isnt the only problem, though its one of the major ones. I mean, the other space themes in the last decade just dont sell as well as say, Blacktron I, did, I dont think. Quote

I'd be careful with the Friends in Space jokes. Over in History they laughed at such jokes... Until news of the Elves reached their shores. Ever since it's like some little light just clicked off inside them. They spentlong hours debating what kind of Elves? Tolkien'ish? Classical Fae? Forrestmen with point years. AVCampos Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Space always had colored canopies. This clear stuff is just weird. Definitely! To me the most "spacey" colour is by far trans-neon-green, but I can't beconsidered inpartial, due to my like for Blacktron II and especially M:Tron... Quote
Artanis I Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I think that Galaxy Squad used clear windows instead of coloured ones because of the 4 colour schemes. What coloured window would go with the grey + blue, red, green & orange? I think it was a better idea to use the same coloured window for all 4, so that the only difference in colour for the 4 teams was the main colour. Of course, coloured windows are better! Dark blue, red, yellow, dark green... mmm... Also, Friends in Space someday? Old news! Quote
