It makes sense, but I don't see how proposing a promotionnal minifig for only a few days and not worldwide will not get the AFOL space fans upset  (Well I'm not concerned, I got two)

Who says that the Exo Suit won't sell out in only a few days?

Problem is the promotionnal minifig is available now (1st-7th July) and the Exo Suit won't be out before... well that's a secret, but it's not this week

Thanks how did I miss that, I have seen the picture many times and it just never click that it was a fleshie, I think it looks good, wonder if they will keep it as it will be the first fleshie in an unlicensed set but if they do you make a good point that this could be the reason for the promo fig.

It could be because instead of having a standard yellow head, the set may include a fleshie minifig as the original proposal had one and this set is designed to, as Caperberry said on his New Elementary blog post about the subject, the set also had to fit in with the storyline that Peter had already set out in his book "Lego Space: Building the Future", which featured minifigures in flesh tones rather than in yellow. So basically, this is probably a clever move by TLG to calm down the AFOLs out there who wanted an ordinary classic space minifig within the set.

That's what I thought. Anyway, we'll find out tomorrow....

I was under the impression we WILL be getting a traditional yellow head in the exosuit, Mark Stafford weighs in on New Elementary:

Flesh toned heads/hands etc. are used to represent characters played by actors (or likely to be represented by them in the case of many super heroes). The figures in Pete's Exo-suit did not represent actors - and that's all I'll say.

Particularly telling that his YouTube video specifically flags for Lego Ideas at the end. It looks like we will be getting the announcement or reveal any day now. I'm almost disappointed. After seeing that video I was kind of wishing we were getting a sequel to his Lego Space book.

What a great video. It's a real throwback to older scary mysterious sci-fi like Alien. So assuming that this is for the Exo-Suit, now I'm wondering what colour the minifig's suit will be. Probably not white. At least we can see that there's definitely the Classic torso and new* helmet + visor.

a classic spaceman with a modern helmet really bugs me and I would rather get an exclusive figure.

It looks silly without a visor. Just put a visor on it.

I think it's a way to make the space fans buys Lego now and when the exo-suit is released :sweet:

They know us all too well.

* new... yeah it's from the 80s, but it's still "new"

I just found this very interesting post by the creator of the teaser, OldScratch, on Bricks In Motion:

The cryptic marketing push for the exo suit is under way. I got to make them a short promo video which is due to appear on the Lego YT channel soon. This is the even more cryptic teaser for that:

Does this mean that another trailer will be arriving today? :sweet:

^ that was really cool.

I mean, hey, it's all "peaceful exploration" until you meet up with a not so peaceful alien race, I suppose. :)

I've just worked out a very small theory about the minifig included and the colour it is.

Basically, at the start of the video teaser there is a test card showing 6 colours. These colours are White, red, yellow, black, blue, and green. You're probably thinking "But they're just colours on a test card Ayliffe, they're not important." But they really are important. You see, all of the colours on here represent all the different coloured classic spacemen that TLG have released in the 70's and 80's. All except GREEN. Furthermore, when these colours become different shades of grey, the shade of gray that green becomes matches exactly the shade of grey on the spacemen.

So yeah, the minifigs included with the set are pretty much guaranteed to be Green.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I really hope your wrong because that would just be wrong

just had a look and I would go with red using the colour bars but if the whole thing was made in black and white to start with then it could be anything but its a good guessing game, the promo set and now this film does lead to it not being white.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say the minifigs will definitely be green. It seems much more likely to me that they'll stick to the original colors as a throwback, though it's possible they could use this opportunity to introduce a new one. But if we get multiple, I'm betting on each having a different color.

The first image of the video is in no way an indicator of the colour of the minifig! It's just a... well I don't know how to say it in english, but it's the thing that help configuring old cathodic TV and such. Plus the colors here are just basic colors. But yes Lego used basic colors at that time.

Seriously, the minifig could be green, but it won't be related to that image in the video, and I really doubt it. IMHO it will be a classic color, like white, blue, red and yellow. And I'd exclude yellow if the minifig's head is actually yellow.

Edit: What would be really cool is a random color in each box :sweet:

Those are SMPTE test pattern bars  Though, I do believe there's usually more of them, but I doubt they are some kind of foreshadowing on minifig color release. That said, I'd love for them to release some classic colored spacemen. I love how the basic colors work with dark/light bley space scenes, but (well preserved) classic spacemen are so hard to get. And since I live in a country without LEGO store, I'll be unable to acquire the spaceman promo :cry_sad:

It can't be red, if it was then the shade of grey used for the body would be the same as the one used for the CS logo on the torso, which it isn't.

It's a test card, and it must have some significance as a usual test card looks like this:

Either way, I still think they're going to be green.

Really? I do appreciate the original spacemen colors, but it would be nice to get new colors granting the Vintage Minifigure sets gave us a full set already...

I didn't like the green Galaxy Squad so guess I am just not a big fan but I don't think green would be a good idea given that part of its appeal it that its classic and even if we did get a new color gray could work better.

Red and green flip to almost the same shade in grayscale. They used to take advantage of this for all sorts of interesting filtering back in the black and white movie and TV days. And you will still heavily use red and green filters if using traditional black and white film and film printing. The Minifigs shown in the clip are probably red suited.

If it helps any it looks like the color assignment in Peter Reid's Lego Space continuity goes something like this

White = ground crew and ground vehicles

Red = Pilots and flight crew

Blue = hostile Environment Engineers (ie terraforming, mining, planetary exploration)

Yellow = scientists

Black = special forces

In the pictures of the Exo Suit in the book, while it is piloted by a White Suited ground tech, there are several Red Suited Flight crew around it.

First of August? Just my luck I'll be only able to visit LEGO store in the last week of July :hmpf_bad: I just hope resellers don't overprice it.

a barrel in a different color to the rest of the suit is not the best start

Yeah, I noticed that too, plus it looks to me the actual hand/claw desgin is black, not LBG as in the original.

Posted (edited)

I never expected it to stay completely LBG, that's just not how LEGO does things. It has to have a bit of color variation, even if it is just different shades of grey. I think it looks great so far, I can't wait to see the full design! This also confirms we're getting multiple minifigures, which hopefully means they're each in a different colored outfit.

Why does it need color variation, it doesn't look as good and who on earth thought a barrel in a space mech for afol was a good idea. I knew they would change things to make it work but this is making me wonder if it will be another DeLorean where it would be better completely designed by an afol or by lego but in the end we get a bit of a mess. Hope I am wrong.
