I've just worked out a very small theory about the minifig included and the colour it is.

Basically, at the start of the video teaser there is a test card showing 6 colours. These colours are White, red, yellow, black, blue, and green. You're probably thinking "But they're just colours on a test card Ayliffe, they're not important." But they really are important. You see, all of the colours on here represent all the different coloured classic spacemen that TLG have released in the 70's and 80's. All except GREEN. Furthermore, when these colours become different shades of grey, the shade of gray that green becomes matches exactly the shade of grey on the spacemen.

So yeah, the minifigs included with the set are pretty much guaranteed to be Green.

You could be onto sometihng...

If you've ever seen Pete's custom fig's you would know he's fond of the idea of a green classic space man.

Also, I've got to agree, that barrel on the arm is just painful...

Why does it need color variation, it doesn't look as good and who on earth thought a barrel in a space mech for afol was a good idea. I knew they would change things to make it work but this is making me wonder if it will be another DeLorean where it would be better completely designed by an afol or by lego but in the end we get a bit of a mess. Hope I am wrong.

It was pretty obvious from the beginning that LEGO would be reworking this one quite a bit, given the illegal connections and huge part count. Just like how it was obvious the hood on the DeLeorean would get a bit of a rework from the fact that the project had to glue stuff to the hood when necessary.

And keep in mind that this isn't necessarily just for AFOLs. Sure, that is the community that got the project up there, and definitely the community that they have in mind most, but it's not the only community that will buy such a thing. When designing it set like this, especially with the recent surge in Classic Space popularity due to the LEGO Movie, you want to make it something that's interesting for all ages.

With Ideas, generally you're voting for the idea and not the model itself. The model is just there to make you interested and want to vote for the set, it's only actually used as the set (with some minor changes) in very special cases.

A dark barrel for a forearm is how you make a space mech interesting for all ages?

It's a good way to keep the piece part down while also providing some color variation, yes. It's not a bad representation of the arms on the original either.

I feel like I should explain something about how the pricing of Cuusoo sets is decided (it's changed a bit with the new Ideas upgrade). At least with the Minecraft project, they calculated the average price that people were willing to pay for the set and it was designed around that. The rumor is that the price is $35 (which seems to be a popular price for Cuusoo sets, probably why the new system for deciding price was implemented into Ideas, as it allows more freedom in that regard). So they most likely had to develop a version of the Exo Suit that would cost $35, which doesn't allow for nearly the same level of detail as the original.

Let's wait and see what it looks like. The barrel is not necessarily a bad choice. It has some texture which adds to the greebling feel a bit. I think the hand itself looks mostly to be that gunmetal color those parts come in. I don't see a problem with that. Some color variation to communicate a huge hulking metal machine is good. Doing it all in LBG would make it look to plasticky at that scale. I never expected the thing to be monochrome. I think something more along the lines of a greyscale variation would do the job better and help give the feel of greebling and business without having to do as much actual greebling, if you get what I mean.

Let's see what it looks like as a whole before we throw rocks at it. (And if it then looks like the DeLorean we can happily throw rocks.) just do keep in mind that we were never ever going to get Peter's version. As even he admits that is an extremely fragile model that a stiff breeze will cause things to fall off. Lego's final model has to be able to withstand the same level of play as something like Kai's Fire Mech. The project may be AFOL bait but the product still has to work on its most basic level as a toy. (Besides we AFOLs are the worst for playing with stuff.)

There's a new teaser photo on Peter Reid's Photostream. It's pretty much the same as yesterday's photo, but the salvage team is getting closer to the door. I would post it here, but then Flickr crashed.

EDIT: Flickr's stopped being fussy now, here's the picture:

So close yet so far....

Don't forget who designed the set; Mark Stafford. I love most, if not all, of his sets, give him a chance.

Its not Mark I am worried about its lego wanting to use as many parts in the color that they have sitting around, look at the Research Institute, it was about getting more females in lego sets and they give one new print and just reuse the other 2, whats the point in that. Anyway a bit more on topic if you look at the telescope in that set they use two colors for the metal part and I can only think this is because they don't want to make a part in a new color. The problem with the barrel is that it is not even the same color as parts either side of it which make it stand out and look like well a barrel. I knew they would have to changed parts to make it more stable but they didn't have to change the color because I might be wrong here but I don't believe that affects how fragile a model is, we have a number of mech in diffent colors and some even with barrels, I really like metalbeard and all the colors work well together but the point of ideas is that we can get something we wouldn't get in a normal set. Any lastly yes a barrel adds texture the texture of WOOD.

My basic expectations for this set is that the reworkings of it will make it much worse than the orignial concept (they simply can't give us something that good), but that it still will be well worth buying.

I'm happy that this picture seems to confirme thay at least keept the basic arm design (you can see a little of the elbow design and it too resembles the original, even if it's modified).

The barrel isn't even brown... how is that wood? It's like those watchbands that have metal panels connected by elastic.

I do spy yellow technic bits on the feet though. Hope there's more yellow elsewhere to offset it, I hate how those parts are only in a certain colour. (Yes I know why they do it)

http://www.brickset.com/ has the some new details.

And its got GREEN spacemen (I have wanted green airtanks for a project for AGES)

Will wait for more pics to decide if the set is worth it (that said, maybe I will buy one anyway to help send the message to LEGO that we want more proper Space sets please)

I think I have done a 360 on this, the suit looks good there are a few bits I would change but over all it looks good maybe great. It is hard to see from that picture if the colors work well together.

Now we now why lego gave us a white spaceman in a promo, thanks lego that or the blue one from 850423 will go straight in my set when I get it.

I can see how a new color would be cool and I am sure a lot of people will love it, its just not for me, gray would have been so much better maybe they should have put 4 figs in the set each with a different color that way there would be something for everyone, it would have also made it better if you planed on getting more than one because rather than having a green army you would have a few of each.

Over all I think they have done a good job and I will try and make sure I get it as soon as I can as I think could sell out lets just hope lego does more runs on this one.

I would love to see more classic space I hope this is the start of something

If lego did it under ideas it would also mean that we would have to play full price, win win for lego

Haha, yep, I've been watching reactions to the video and I think AyliffeMakit was the first to make the connection with the test card. I thought I was being pretty subtle with that.

and love the turtle, has Peter Reid got any other classic space set on ideas that we should all support? If not now is the time to put the next one up because will all the hype around classic space with this and the movie if we don't get more classic space now I am not sure we ever will

Hothbricks indicate 321 pieces and a US price at 34.99$... To be confirmed...

the barrels do feel out of place, and I don't see why they could have used Peter's solution for the arms...

Very cool video, nicely done!

I agree about the barrels, but overall this looks very nice! Looking forward to some high res pictures. I was secretly hoping for two figs (didn't want to jinx it by saying it), but green was a big surprise for me.

I will get at least 2 of these, probably more. Might even build me one of those stands from the video...
