Last night I started work on my second MINI Challenge model...a wheeled excavator. Here's the chassis design, only 55 parts and it has 4 wheel steering.

Now to work on the hardest part: a good-looking digging arm.

But there is nothing to stop him from building two entry, but then picking the best one and only entering that one....

I seem to enjoy finding loop holes in Jims work.:snicker:

Plenty of people are making more than one "mini" model. It's a nice challenge with the 200 piece limit, no need to get your knickers in a twist about it (this is a phrase used in England, I don't know how frequent it is in other countries  )

The undercarriage (?) is looking really nice, the 4 wheel steering is pretty neat :classic: looking forward to seeing you get annoyed when you get to 201 pcs like everyone else seems to be

I also mentioned this

Jim's work has many errors to exploit

You get yours in a twist quite a lot don't you.

by judging peoples reactions to multiple models it will give you a better chance of success putting forward the public chocie over choosing your personal favourite one.

That's a nice try, Looking forward to seeing the complete model.

BTW, if you implement the steering function with gear rack above the gear, I'm afraid it wouldn't work smoothly. That's a difference between LDD and reality.

That's exactly what I'm doing: Building multiple models and choosing the best one, and entering that. I did the same thing for the Triple Build Contest

Everything I model in LDD is only for a parts count, I'm building everything with physical parts alongside the digital version. Steering works very smoothly, nothing to worry about

Progress:

Took me about 5 tries, but I finally got an arm design that I'm somewhat happy with. The main boom will be moved via a worm gear system, and the other sections of the arm will be moved by hand. Parts count is around 90 :classic:

Looks to me like the beginnings of great build

This is turning out to be one humdinger of a competition!

One build posted. Two builds posted. That's more than I've come up with :cry_sad:

Hats off you you all

Progress! I'm at 188 parts right now, still a little room to improve. So far, I'm really happy with how this thing looks, and it's very nice to play with. :classic:

And the obligatory parts picture:

Now which one do you think is better, the excavator or the ATV?

As of now, I'm siding with the ATV. :classic:

Both are excellent models and each would make a strong entry in the competition but if I have to express a preference I say go with the ATV.

I think it's great.

mini ATV - its cute and fresh and there are too many excavators in the lego world already

I think you need to work on the front steering hubs a bit - those would snag on objects if it is to be an ATV

otherwise you're limited to smooth surfaces...

here's how I did it in my 8 wheeler mini trial truck in the end, originally I started out differently - Lego has done similar before
