Yooha Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 These creatures are use by the nomad people of the Tatullians who live in the Westersands. Being the relatives of the common armadillos, they were domesticated by the people of the desert many centuries ago. The Tatullians depend of these animals greatly and use them in various fields. Since their skin is thick, it is hard to harm them during a battle. Their riders wield long spears to stab the enemy from the height of the Tatullo. The most distinctive feature of them comes from the armadillo heritage: they can curl up into a giant impenetrable ball, which can be used as a cover during a fight. It withstands common arrows or spears, but Greek fire or other heavy attack can hurt these creatures, so Tatullians don’t use them as living shield when their loved ones can be in serious danger. Tatullos are surprisingly balanced when they are curled as pictured below, so they can be used as “outposts” when no higher grounds can be found in the desert. The bond between the mount and rider is very strong. During the heavy sandstorm Tatullos surrounds their master to protect them from the harsh wind that would surely cost the human’s life. That huge body guards the fragile one… (strangely they have orange eyelids) Sorry from my Mitgardian brothers for not building this in the North, but the natural environment of the armadillos required that. Disclaimer: As it is a digital build, is not considered to be an official entry of the Mini-challenge. I just wanted to show this. I planned to build an animal that I find very cute, and not seen to often in LEGO form. Building the “curling mechanism” was quite a challenge. And if you want to punish someone, force them to use these ball-joints in LDD. It has unlimited possibilities, but making the right position is more time-consuming than in real life. Quote
MassEditor Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 This is really cool Yooha, I can certainly see how difficult this would have been in LDD. The Tatullo design is very clever and I really enjoyed the story and presentation, especially the scene of the Tatullo protecting its rider during a sand storm. This is definitely one of my favorite entries so far. For what it's worth, I would love to see this in the official mini-challenge. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Awesome stuff! I love armadillos- brilliant use of the ball joints! Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 This is such a great idea, and well built too! Quote
ZCerberus Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Awesome! The colors are very cool. I need to find some of that little ball joint with the stud on it. Looks like it could be very useful! Quote
Jorrith Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Awesome stuff! I love armadillos- brilliant use of the ball joints! The first thing i thought it looks like an armadillo! Awesome build tho, also the story that comes with it! It's very original and should make an awesome mount for any warrior in historia! Quote
Scaevola Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Good work, I like the thick outer shell of the creature Quote
MKJoshA Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Oh wow This is amazing! That ball-joint-with-stud piece, is that from waaay back when Lego used those as hands for their brick-built figures? Quote
Yooha Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Awesome! The colors are very cool. I need to find some of that little ball joint with the stud on it. Looks like it could be very useful! Thanks! The Existing Color Policy is on for this build, and I want to maintain it for my builds in the future - except for "I would like to see an official set like this" builds. Oh wow This is amazing! That ball-joint-with-stud piece, is that from waaay back when Lego used those as hands for their brick-built figures? Yes, and I'm glad that there is a ball-joint piece with a 1x1 stud area. The others would have been too big. And thanks for all the praises! Telling the truth, I wanted to make it more ball-shaped, closer to a real sphere which is typical for real-life armadillos. The lego build is too "flat" in the standard mode and doesn't have a hemisphere shape when seen from the front. But the IRL armadillos can somehow stretch their back when forming a ball, which is impossible with plastic, so I had to "pack in" the stomach instead, with these overlapping side-shields which form a cone rather than a hemisphere - I hope you know what I try to say. And it can curl up completely with the head touching the tail (not pictured), but there would be no space for the minifig inside. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Really looks like a relative of the armadillo The way it can curl up is really neat and that picture in the sand storm is fantastic Quote
Garmadon Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Excellent job with this, Yooha, it looks a lot like a armadillo Great work making it able to roll up as well Quote
Davidbarrena Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Very cool. Really like the "outpost" pose. Very original build. Quote
mccoyed Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I'd really like to see one of these in bricks. I could almost do it, I think, but the colors would be wrong. Could you make instructions, Yooha? I can give it a try at the very least. Quote
Gabe Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 What a beauty, Yooha! I really like the curling function, very clever. The sandstorm pic is great too. Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 This is awesome! I like the concept of it being a relative of Armadillos and the little seat you gave the rider. Quote
Gunman Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I love the protection capabilities of this creature! Awesome design too... Great entry... Quote
Mike S Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Great build! You're softening me up on these brick built creatures.... Quote
mephistopheles Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Great idea and some really nice part usage! Quote
